There are now few revivals of reli gion in our land, and for a year or two past piety has been supposed to be on the decline 3 and yet, because knowledge respecting the nature and claims of the missionary enter prize has increased more than piety has declined, the disposition to patronize mis sions among the heathen was never so strong as it is now. When we read of the sterling piety of good men in past ages, we are con founded by the thought that they felt and did so little for the heathen. This we must not excuse. But is it not accounted for by their circumstances, which were less favor able for gaining access to the heathen world, and by the absence of that kind Of knowl edge, by means of which the sympathies and energies of the church are now so exten sively enlisted in foreign missions? Had good men of past ages been placed in our. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Missions in State and Church: Sermons and Addresses Certain Greeks wished to see Jesus, and they applied for help to the Greek-named apostles. There does not seem to have been an interview in their mind. They were proselytes to Judaism on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Jesus had just made His royal entry, and He was the talk of the town. They would not miss one of the great sights of their journey. Visit Jerusalem as proselytes, and not see the last sensation, the possible Messiah! As soon would an English pervert go to Rome, and not see the Pope. When Jesus was told, it produced a singular effect upon Him. Book The Missionary Enterprise

Download or read book The Missionary Enterprise written by Baron Stow and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Missionary Enterprise: A Collection of Discourses on Christian Missions The preparation of this volume was undertaken at the suggestion of others, whose opinions, ever entitled to respect, seemed to present a demand for service, which the Editor did not consider himself as at liberty to disregard. This claim he was the more happy to honor, as it afforded an opportunity, through the medium of secular enterprise, to promote an interest which he has long regarded as of primary and paramount importance. Whatever may be the measure of profit from the pecuniary investment, the hope is fondly cherished, both by the Publishers and the Editor, that large benefits, of a much higher order, will accrue to that noble Cause which it is especially intended to advance. The task of selection has been, in some instances, peculiarly difficult. Several discourses, of great excellence, have been omitted, which, perhaps, would have been included, had not circumstances appeared to encourage the expectation, that a second series might be demanded. Should this volume be favorably received, another may succeed, comprising not only sermons, but a rich variety of addresses, essays, and eloquent appeals, all pertaining to the same great subject - Christian Missions. Many of this class of productions are too valuable to be left scattered in ephemeral forms, and should be gathered up, and added to the increasing stock of our Missionary literature, and thus made to extend and perpetuate their salutary efficiency. Corrections and additions have been made, by some of the authors, with special reference to this publication. Marginal notes and references, not necessary to be retained, have been omitted; and, in a few instances, the text has been slightly abridged. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Missionary Sermon: Preached by the Appointment of Hopewell Presbytery, at Its Sessions in Sparta, 11th, April, 1846 IT has become trite to say, and yet it cannot be too often repeated, that the Bible is the great and indispensable instrument for the promotion of pure morals in the world. All other means, however promising in appearance, and however confidently relied upon, have utterly failed, whenever they have been employed apart from the Bible. It is the instrumentality which God has appoint ed to make men virtuous and happy. To this all must betake themselves, who would permanently benefit their fellow-men. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Apostolic Ministry: Sermons and Addresses IT is with some hesitation that the following Sermons and Addresses are issued in permanent form to the public. Most of them were strictly official utterances delivered by me as President of the Wesleyan Metho dist Conference. Somfhee are included'which werewnof 'stric'tly official, namely, Addresses to the Wesleyan Methodist Union for Social Service at Ox ford, to the Wesley Deaconesses at the Annual Dedi cation Service, to the Southport Holiness Convention, and to the National Council of Evangelical Free Churches on 'the Relative Duties Of the Church and the Nation in regard to Poverty.' The volume is completed by the addition of the Presidential Address to the National Free Church Council in 1906, and the sermon on retiring from the Presidency in the following year. The reason for publishing discourses thus delivered on many different occasions, and dealing with diverse aspects of Christian Life and Work, is that they form a connected whole. They are an attempt to show the inclusiveness ofthe spiritual life, and to set forth the way in which many great causes which appeal to Christians in the present day, notably, Evangelism, Foreign Missions, Social Reform and Christian Reunion, are related to faith in Christ and to the service of His kingdom. They are sent forth in the hope and prayer that they may be helpful to some in reconciling the claims of the inward and the outward, of the Spiritual and the Social, through a Clearer and more distinct appre hension Of the meaning of the Christian religion, as the revelation of the love of God and the fulfilment of love in man, through Christ. Book The Love and Wisdom of God

Download or read book The Love and Wisdom of God written by Edward King and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Love and Wisdom of God: Being a Collection of Sermons Cuddesdon days, a sermon to Men only, a Missionary sermon at St. Paul's, a School sermon, two Memorial ser mons, Addresses given at a Quiet Day for Bishops during the Lambeth Conference of 1897, a paper on clerical study, and a sermon preached at the Festival of Lincoln Theological College in 1888. It is always a very different thing to read a sermon and to hear one. This is specially true in the case of a preacher like the late Bishop of Lincoln. His gracious and inspiring presence, his appealing voice, his intensely sympathetic in tonation, cannot be produced on the printed page, and much, very much, is consequently lost. Those who knew him best will agree that it seemed comparatively to matter very little what he said it was his presence and his way of saying what he had to say which seemed all-important the magnetic attraction of his presence was in itself more than half the sermon. It follows, therefore, that a'volume of his printed sermons can only suggest in a very attenuated way the real effect of the preacher. It was, however, thought worth while that his method of preaching and teaching should not be altogether lost to a younger generation, and the only way of securing this (with whatever inevitable drawbacks) was to publish a volume like the present. They will at least show that the Bishop's mind was continually at work as well as his heart; he was a real thinker, and used to take great pains in preparing his ser mons, sometimes beginning them quite early in the morn ing between four and five o'clock While he was still in bed. In earlier years he wrote but little, and preached gener ally from notes but latterly, as he found his memory less reliable, and to avoid the strain of speaking extempore, his practice was to write almost everything. Book Christianity Fitted for Universal Diffusion

Download or read book Christianity Fitted for Universal Diffusion written by Thomas Treadwell Stone and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity Fitted for Universal Diffusion: A Sermon, Delivered in North Yarmouth, June 28, 1837, Before the Maine Missionary Society, at Its Thirtieth Anniversary It is scarcely more evident that human nature demands some religion, than it is, - and this is my second remar.k, -that it asks for such a religion as that ofjesus Christ. The Gospel, 1 am well aware, is offensive to the depravity which pervades and corrupts the human tnind. It reveals a God against whom selfishness and pride constitute a direct enmity, and a Saviour moreover, whose doctrine and whose sacrifice bring down all high thoughts and Spread through the soul a dark and most op pressive consciousness of guilt. Yet this very revelation is essential to its fitness for such a being as man. We have an illustration in the story of the woman of Sychar, with whom Jesus conversed at the well. It could be no very pleasant thing to her, that he laid open her depravity, specifying the very sins of which she was guilty. But this very disclosure is the ground of her address to the citizens; Come, see a man which told me all things that ever] did: is not this the Christ? The reasoning seems to have been this: Jesus declared himself to bethe Messiah; his declaration is confirmed, its truth evinced, by his supernatural knowledge of my character and history. A similar process of reasoning goes far in all ages to produce the same conclusion. Christ in his word lavs open the heart, and tells man the story of himself. He shows the sinner what he has done. He sets before him his own image. He awakens and repeats his inmostconsciousness. No pleasant disclosure, it is true; but yet so just, so distinct, s'o vivid, that he does hot readily get rid of it. Some will feel and beliew; and of those who do not, there are few who succeed in casting off all co'n'viction; revile and evade as they will, it is not easy to silence the secret witness; the voice within the soul repeatingand attesting the outward word of God. A religion which should bring no charge of sin againstman, might indeed be less fixated than Christianity; but it could be neither felt nor be lieved. It could not reach the case of the sinner. It could not tell him what he had done. It would therefore want adaptation to his state. Should it ever gain a temporary prevalence, it would therefore cease in a little while to spread and be strong. Man calls aloud for something which at once arouses and utters his own consciousness. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Missionary Ammunition for the Exclusive Use of Pastors, Vol. 1: The Pastor as a World Leader, November 1, 1916 As to this Opening number, the material is arranged in four parts. The first contains several preliminary articles as to the place of the pastor in the foreign missionary enterprise of his denomination, both in the matter of preaching and planning. In the second part we give a survey of the missionary situation in certain non-christian lands. This by way of acquainting our pastors with the outstanding conditions abroad - a sort of general background against which they can sketch in as many incidents and illustrations as they wish. The statement of the general situation is followed by a typical missionary incident, which should be quotable in a sermon or address, and a typical personality, either missionary or native, who may be described as representative of the work in that particular area. The third part describes certain missionary books of special interest to pastors. There follows as a fourth section A Sanctuary of Blis sions, which we hope the pastors will appreciate as a stimulus and guide to prayer in behalf of the world-wide enterprises of the church. Do we not all feel that intercessory prayer is our greatest need? The second number in this series, to be issued about March 1, 1917, will be of an apologetic character, under the title, In Defense of Foreign Missions. There will follow a number in which we mean to gather the very best stories of missionaries of all boards and lands illustrative of how human lives are transformed by the gospel. Finally, there will be a biographical number. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Parochial and Missionary Responsibility

Download or read book Parochial and Missionary Responsibility written by William Chauncy Langdon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Parochial and Missionary Responsibility: Two Sermons Preached at Christ Church, Cambridge, on Sundays, October 8th and 22d, 1876 It would seem sufficient in reply to quote the words of the texts whose combination alone comprises the whole argument. The Son of Man, said Jesus, is come to seek and to save that which was lost; and the living, practical proof of His mission, clearly understood by all and addressing itself to all, was the extent to which He was going about doing good at once to the bodies and to the souls of men, and especially the fact that to the poor the Gospel was preached. And what His own ministry had been, such, by divine power, was also to be theirs whom He left to continue to do and to teach as He had begun. As my Father hath sent Me, were His own words, even so send I you. It is true that Christ also gave His ministry the charge to teach those who had received the Gospel, to observe all things whatsoever he had commanded; and it is true that the first Apostles both set the ministry the example and gave them defi nite precepts for feeding the flock of Christ as well with the sincere milk of the word as also with stronger meat when they have grown thereby. But this latter charge was an addi tion to the former, not a substitute for it. When and where the Gospel has been already faithfully preached to every creature to the poor as well as to the rich; when and where every effort has been made which divinely guided human wisdom can devise or divinely sustained human energies carry out, to seek and to save that which was lost; then and there, - and not till then, and only there - are the missionary responsibilities of the Christian ministry wholly superceded by the pastoral.
