Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Japan and Back is an important book because of its raw honesty about the missionary experience. Most missionary books paper over the hard stuff, but Japan and Back hits it straight on. Some readers may be shocked, but sending churches, mission agencies, and young people thinking about missions need to read this book and learn from its message." - Dan Ellrick, missionary in Japan of over 20 years Joey Stoll had no clue what he was getting into when he went to rural Japan as a long-term missionary. He left full of excitement and arrived in a world very different from what he expected. Among hilarious experiences living in a foreign culture and while receiving miracles of God's grace, he faced questions like: What should missionary service look like? What do we do when struggling with depression? How do we process losing places and people we care deeply for? Compiled in short chapters written as stories, devotions, and journal entries, this is one missionary's strange journey to the Land of the Rising Sun and an equally strange journey of returning to his own culture.

Book Sowing in Tears Reaping in Joy

Download or read book Sowing in Tears Reaping in Joy written by Florence J. Miller and published by . This book was released on 2013-06-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meet Florence Miller! For almost four decades, Florence served as a missionary in Japan under the North American Baptist Conference. She was raised in a strong Christian home in Benton Harbor, Michigan, and felt an affinity for Japan at a very early age through studying about the country in grade school. Florence felt God's call upon her life when hearing of a dream had by Amy Carmichael, missionary to India, and she determined to go to a country where Jesus was not well known. This country was Japan, having just been defeated in World War II and open to receive missionaries at General Douglas MacArthur's urging. Florence was faced with the challenge of being one of the first North American Baptist missionaries to Japan, blazing a trail for those who would follow. From 1951 to her retirement in 1989, she sought to sow the seed of God's Word in the lives of people who had been steeped for centuries in Buddhist and Shintoist traditions. She is credited with planting several churches in Japan, frequently encountering situations that took her far beyond her comfort zone. She spent several years doing university student evangelism, which proved very fruitful in the salvation of a number of students and in inspiring them to share the gospel with others. This led to her teaching at the Osaka Biblical Seminary to train those who felt called of God to places of Christian service. After retirement, she returned to her home in Benton Harbor, Michigan, where she attended Napier Parkview Baptist Church and participated in outreach activities there. During her retirements years, she went back to Japan 10 times to serve in various capacities at the request of Japanese friends and missionaries. She now lives in The Willows, a retirement home in St. Joseph, Michigan.

So said former OMF worker Miriam Davis, whose book 'Utterly Amazed: Following the call of God in Japan' tells the story of how those two years became forty-two, as well as the surprising challenges of retiring to the UK in 2017. In that time, as OMF Japan Field Directors Chris Pain and Kesia Pain say in their foreword, 'Miriam has experienced the joys, challenges and pitfalls of missionary life. She tells the story of those years with honesty and a keen eye for how God was at work sustaining her, changing her and using her for his purposes . . . The way in which she has shared her feelings, weaknesses and struggles gives testimony to God's work in her life, and ultimately gives God the glory.' Join Miriam on her journey of following the Good Shepherd through all the twists and turns of sharing the good news of Jesus cross-culturally. Discover his faithfulness through culture shock, heartbreak, burnout and the joy of this journey. And find comfort, challenge and spiritual food for your own life!
