Book excerpt: The story of Don McClure describes five decades of adventurous commitment to serving some of the most primitive people of Sudan and Ethiopia in the middle years of the 20th century. The lively narrative of life among the Shulla, Nuer, Dinka, Anuak, and Somali reads like a well-crafted fiction. Adventure in Africa is a winsome and challenging account of a wonderfully human, incredibly brave, relentlessly energetic, and completely happy man who devoted half a century to East Africa when he was shot to death in 1977.

Book Twenty nine Years in the West Indies and Central Africa

Download or read book Twenty nine Years in the West Indies and Central Africa written by The Rev Hope Masterton Wadell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 715 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1970. This vivid account of the missionary work of the Rev. Hope Masterton Waddell in the West Indies and Central Africa was first published in 1863. During his sixteen years in Jamaica he witnessed the slave revolt and the aftermath of the abolition of slavery. The mission helped former slaves adapt to freedom in new communities. In 1846 he left Jamaica for Calabar in West Africa (now part of Nigeria), and his narrative is one of the best European accounts of pre-colonial Africa. The mission was concerned with ending local practices such as polygamy, human sacrifice and witchcraft, and Waddell formed a close relationship with King Eyo. The book gives considerable detail about the history and culture of the area, as well as on the work of the mission. His work in Calabar is still commemorated there in the Hope Waddell Training Institute, Duke Town.

Excerpt: ...and taciturn, and we were glad to find ourselves safely beyond their borders. By the evening of the second day we had passed the northern boundary of the dreaded Ijebu country, and entered the territory of our friends, the Egbds. Soon after reaching Abbeokuta, the remainder of our party were laid up with African fever. Mr. Lacy's eyes were so much affected that he returned home to avoid total blindness. Mr. Dennard returned to Lagos to begin a station there for tlie purpose of forwarding supplies to the interior. His wife died of fever early in January, and he then removed to Abbeokuta, where he died in June, 1854. He had obtained land for a station at Abbeokuta, but had not yet commenced building. The station is to be resumed. About two months after landing at Lagos, myself and wife proceeded alone and sorrowful to Ijaye, to begin the Yoruba mission. Mr. Mann, of the Church Missionary Society, had preceded us by several months. Kumi welcomed me back to Ijaye, and told me that my land and the boxes I had left in his charge, were all safe. I rented two rooms in a native house, to live in till I could build. They wore about seven feet wide, and scarcely eix feet high to the ceiling, with very low doors, and no windows. The heat was intolerable, especially to my wife, who was in bad health, and not accustomed to African weather. But there was no remedy, except in building a better house; and to this work I devoted myself with so much zeal, that I had little time, and, I confess, but little inclination to preach, for several months. The first labor was to clear the land of bushes and wild sugar-cane, a gigantic and useless sorghum twenty feet high. Some of the chiefs volunteered their people to assist me; but I found this plan so uncertain...
