Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1952, CBC television has played a unique role as the primary mass media purveyor of Canadian history. Yet until now, there have been no comprehensive accounts of Canadian history on television. Monica MacDonald takes us behind the scenes of the major documentaries and docudramas broadcast on the CBC, including in Explorations (1956–64) and the series Images of Canada (1972–76), The National Dream (1974), The Valour and the Horror (1992), and Canada: A People's History (2000–02). Drawing on a wide range of sources, MacDonald explores how producers struggled to represent the Canadian past under a range of external and internal pressures. Despite dramatic shifts in the writing of history over this period, she determines that television themes and interpretations largely remained the same. The greater change was in the production and presentation, particularly in the role of professional historians, as journalists emerged not only as the new producers of Canadian history on CBC television, but also as the new content authorities. A critique of public history through the lens of political economy, Recasting History reveals the conflicts, compromises, and controversies that have shaped the CBC version of the Canadian past.

Book Creative Industries in Canada

Download or read book Creative Industries in Canada written by Miranda Campbell and published by Canadian Scholars. This book was released on 2022-08-05 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creative Industries in Canada is a foundational text that encourages students to think critically about creative industries within a Canadian context and interrogate the current state and future possibilities of the industry. While much of current creative industries literature concerns the United Kingdom, the United States, and Asia, this text captures the breadth of how Canadian industries are organized and experienced, and how they operate. This ambitious collection aims to guide students through the current landscape of Canadian creative industries through three thematic sections. “Production” collects chapters focused on how national discourses and identities are produced through creative industries and the tensions that exist between policy and media. “Participation” explores how we engage with these industries in different roles: as consumer, creator, policy-maker, and more. “Pedagogies” explores how education impacts inclusion and visibility in creative industries. Truly intersectional, Creative Industries in Canada provides students with practical industry knowledge and frameworks to explore the current state of the field and its future. With a broad application to many undergraduate programs, this text is a must-read resource for those pursuing media studies, arts management, creative and cultural industries studies, communications, and arts and humanities.

Book The Past Present and Future of Evangelical Mission

Download or read book The Past Present and Future of Evangelical Mission written by Narry F. Santos and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-07-15 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crisis is an invitation to both prophetic evaluation and new imagination. In this volume, Canadian missiologists and practitioners consider the past and how the past might enable the church to move forward in Christian mission--in the academy, agency, assembly, and the agora. How can the Canadian church welcome different voices from the periphery? What must be done to empower the next generation? How can we respond in light of the injustices done to our Indigenous brothers and sisters? Where does reconciliation fit into the picture? How might we navigate between secularization and fundamentalisms? How ought we move together in mission and in unity across denominational difference? How can we equip laypeople to live their callings faithfully in the agora? How can work in the marketplace be ministry? And lastly, how is the Spirit at work in our contexts in this day and age? These questions (among others) onboard us into the ongoing conversation about the state of evangelical mission in Canada, and each of these essays adeptly lead us into the beginnings of answers to these questions. These essays address how the past informs our future, and how we might answer the prophetic call with both hope and renewed vigor to participate in the mission of God.

Book Life against States of Emergency

Download or read book Life against States of Emergency written by Sarah Marie Wiebe and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2023-02-15 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For six weeks in 2012–13, Attawapiskat chief Theresa Spence undertook a high-profile ceremonial fast to advocate for improved Canadian-Indigenous relations. Life against States of Emergency responds to the central question she asked the Canadian public to consider: What does it mean to be in a treaty relationship today? This incisive research weaves together community-engaged research, Attawapiskat lived experiences, discourse analysis, ecofeminist and Indigenous studies scholarship, art, activism, and storytelling to advance a transformative, future-oriented approach to treaty relations. By centring community voices, Life against States of Emergency seeks to cultivate democratic dialogue about environmental justice.
