Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An insider's account of how and why Canada said no to George W. Bush - and why the missile defence issue won't go away In the wake of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the United States embarked on a mission to resurrect the ballistic missile defence program once envisioned by Ronald Reagan known as Star Wars. But when Bush turned to Canada to support the program, he touched off a political firestorm. This book is an account of how this issue emerged in Canada, based on interviews on and off the record with cabinet ministers, MPs, generals and protestors. It explains how an unlikely coalition of parliamentarians, peace activists, former diplomats, experts and ordinary citizens were able to stop Canadian participation. Steven Staples, one of the key organizers of the opposition to missile defence, explores the public positions and private motivations that led Paul Martin to reverse his original decision to participate. With round two of the missile defence debate likely to take place soon, led by a Conservative defence minister who wants to reopen the issue, this book is timely as well as readable.

Book excerpt: The missile defence policy of the US plays a crucial role in international affairs and is normally studied from a US perspective. This book is different, it delivers a sharp analysis of regional and national variations and integrates them with US viewpoints to present a rounded and comprehensive study. What will be the international ramifications of American plans to deploy a comprehensive national missile defence policy? This is a key question for all those wishing to build a sense of the global future and is here answered with clarity and rigour by expert contributors. This new study breaks the mould of traditional assessments that focus exclusively on the US world picture and are inevitably one-dimensional. Here we see that US action automatically entails reactions as this text advances a more balanced approach. By integrating a focus on US policy with a strong analysis of regional dynamics, it demonstrates that the global ramifications of US policy are indeed contingent upon distinct regional and national variations. These differences in turn have consequences both for the challenges the US faces in relation to missile defence and for the future of world politics. This is an innovative and groundbreaking study that contains lessons for those wishing to safeguard the future by becoming alert to its challenges and complexities.

Book excerpt: The events of 9/11 turned North American politics upside down. US policy makers focused less on how they could better integrate the economies of Mexico, Canada, and the United States and more on security and sovereignty. Security experts tend to view the events that followed within a bilateral framework. Game Changer broadens the canvas examining how America’s desire to keep its two borders closed to threats but open to trade has influenced Canada and Mexico. The contributors draw on international relations theory to examine and explain not only how post-911 security policy has transformed relations between the three countries but also how policy makers can reconcile the need for greater regional cooperation in the security realm with national autonomy in other areas of life. By adopting a truly North American, or trilateral, framework, this challenging and authoritative volume suggests new approaches to security in the post-9/11 world.

Book Holding the Bully s Coat

Download or read book Holding the Bully s Coat written by Linda McQuaig and published by Doubleday Canada. This book was released on 2010-06-04 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the Bush administration has turned the United States into a belligerent and lawless force in the world, the Canadian government has followed in close step. Attempting to please our powerful neighbour, Ottawa has abandoned Canada’s traditional role as a leading peacekeeping nation, and instead adopted a more militaristic, warlike stance, battling insurgents in Afghanistan as a junior partner in the U.S. "war on terror." Ottawa has also abandoned Canada’s traditional attempt to be a fair-minded mediator and conciliator, most notably in the Middle East conflict. And, under the government of Stephen Harper, Canada has joined the United States in becoming a leading obstructionist in worldwide efforts to deal with climate change — perhaps the most urgent issue on the international agenda. The switch in direction evident in these positions has redefined the way Canada operates in the world, transforming our country into a helpful assistant to an aggressive U.S. power, increasingly out of sync with our European allies and with the rest of the world. As in all her previous books, Linda McQuaig strips away the comforting illusions peddled by those in our elite. With her trademark combination of research, analysis, irreverence and passion, McQuaig shows how the elite has pushed us down a path with far-reaching consequences for us as a nation, and for our ability to find our own way in the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2019 Missile Defense Review - January 2019 According to a senior administration official, a number of new technologies are highlighted in the report. The review looks at "the comprehensive environment the United States faces, and our allies and partners face. It does posture forces to be prepared for capabilities that currently exist and that we anticipate in the future." The report calls for major investments from both new technologies and existing systems. This is a very important and insightful report because many of the cost assessments for these technologies in the past, which concluded they were too expensive, are no longer applicable. Book National Missile Defense

  • Publisher : Nova Publishers
  • Release : 2002
  • ISBN : 9781590332474
  • Pages : 148 pages

Download or read book National Missile Defense written by Erin V. Causewell and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2002 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Missiles came of age after World War II and the United States has pursued missile defences ever since. The issue has turned out to be one of the most divisive of the past generation taking into account the Russian position and their threat or perceived threat and the technical difficulties of actually implementing any missile defence. The Bush Administration claims that for the first time an effective missile defence is technically possible and that the threat of weapons of mass destruction has spread to many nations and groups other that Russia. The two factors, according to them, make missile defence an urgent priority justifying the breaking of the widely-revered ABM Treaties. Their argument rests partially on a bet that the Russians have now fallen so far behind since the Yeltsin government took over that they cannot keep up technologically. Although terrorism groups will not be deterred by the missile defence being planned, countries like China, North Korea etc., might well be. This book frames the current debate and also presents the legal considerations for withdrawal from the ABM Treaties.

Book Ballistic Missile Defense

Download or read book Ballistic Missile Defense written by Ashton B. Carter and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defense against nuclear attack—so natural and seemingly so compelling a goal—has provoked debate for at least twenty years. Ballistic missle defense systems, formerly called antiballistic missile systems, offer the prospect of remedying both superpowers' alarming vulnerability to nuclear weapons by technological rather than political means. But whether ballistic missile defenses can be made to work and whether it is wise to build them remain controversial. The U.S.-Soviet Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty of 1972 restricts testing and deployment of ballistic missile defenses but has not prohibited more than a decade of research and development on both sides. As exotic new proposals are put forward for space-based directed-energy systems, questions about the effectiveness and wisdom of missile defense have again become central to the national debate on defense policy. This study, jointly sponsored by the Brookings Institution and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, examines the strategic, technological, and political issues raised by ballistic missile defense. Eight contributors take an analytical approach to their areas of expertise, which include the relationship of missile defense to nuclear strategy, the nature and potential applications of current and future technologies, the views on missile defense in the Soviet Union and among the smaller nuclear powers, the meaning of the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty for today's technology, and the present role and historical legacy of ballistic missile defense in the context of East-West relations. The volume editors give a comprehensive introduction to this wide range of subjects and an assessment of future prospects. In the final chapter, nine knowledgeable observers offer their varied personal views on the ballistic missile defense question.
