Book The Queer and the Vernacular Languages in India

Download or read book The Queer and the Vernacular Languages in India written by Kaustav Chakraborty and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-09-15 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses regional expressions of the queer experience in texts available in the Indian vernacular languages. It studies queer autobiographies and literary and cinematic texts written in the vernacular languages on gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender issues. The authors outline the specific terms that are popular in the bhashas (languages) to refer to the queer people and discuss any neo coinages/modes of communication invented by the queer people themselves. The volume also addresses the lack of queer representation in certain language communities and the lack of queer interaction in non-metropolitan cities in India. An important contribution to the field of queer studies in India, this timely book will be an essential read for scholars and researchers of gender studies, queer studies, cultural studies, discrimination and exclusion studies, language studies, political studies, sociology, postcolonial studies and South Asian studies.

Book Japanese Fairy Tales Illustrated

Download or read book Japanese Fairy Tales Illustrated written by Yei Theodora Ozaki and published by Full Moon Publications. This book was released on 2015-02-01 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japanese Fairy Tales signifies a certain set of well-known classic tales, with a vague distinction of whether they fit the rigorous definition of folktale or not. The admixed imposters are literate written pieces, dating back to the Muromachi period (14th-16th centuries) or even earlier times in the Middle Ages. These would not normally qualify as "folktales" (i.e., pieces collected from oral tradition among the populace). In a more stringent sense, "Japanese folktales" refer to orally transmitted folk narrative. Systematic collection of specimens was pioneered by folklorist Kunio Yanagita. Yanagita disliked the word minwa, a coined term directly translated from "folktale" (Yanagita stated that the term was not familiar to actual old folk he collected folktales from, and was not willing to "go along" with the conventions of other countries). He therefore proposed the use of the term mukashibanashi ("tales of long ago"?) to apply to all creative types of folktales (i.e., those that are not "legendary" types which are more of a reportage).

Book The Childhood of Fiction

Download or read book The Childhood of Fiction written by J. A. Macculloch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Childhood of Fiction: A Study of Folk Tales and Primitive Thought To many who love folk-tales for themselves, and because they, of all forms of literature, are to the eye of the mind "Magic casements, opening on the foam Of perilous seas, in faery lands forlorn," I shall seem to be no more than "One who would peep and botanise Upon his mother's grave," because I have dared to show that some of the things which, in these old-world stories, form their fascination, have had their origin in sordid fact and reality. Yet all romantic literature is also a criticism of real life; nor does it take away from our enjoyment of Scott's novels or Tennyson's poems to know this. I, too, am a lover of folk-tales; I have read and enjoyed thousands of them; and now that my task is done, I am ready to begin reading and enjoying them again. Age cannot wither, nor custom - even primitive custom - stale their infinite variety. It does not seem to me that, while trying to explain the irrational incidents of folk-tales, and to show how they have arisen, I have destroyed their romantic freshness. Book Folk Tales Every Child Should Know

Download or read book Folk Tales Every Child Should Know written by Hamilton Wright Mabie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Folk Tales Every Child Should Know: A Selection of the Popular Traditions of Various Nations for Young People When the traveller looks at Rome for the first time he does not realize that there have been several cities on the same piece of ground, and that the churches and palaces and other great buildings he sees to-day rest on an earlier and invisible city buried in dust beneath the foundations of the Rome of the Twentieth Century. In like manner, and because all visible things on the surface of the earth have grown out of older things which have ceased to be, the world of habits, the ideas, customs, fancies, and arts, in which we live is a survival of a younger world which long ago disappeared. When we speak of Friday as an unlucky day, or touch wood after saying that we have had good luck for a long time, or take the trouble to look at the new moon over the right Shoulder, or avoid crossing the street while a funeral is passing, we are recall ing old superstitions or beliefs, a vanished world in which our remote forefathers lived.
