Book excerpt: This report describes in detail the analysis of the MISERS BLUFF II dust cloud data base (in-situ particle size spectral data and fallout data) obtained during Phase 1 of the MISERS BLUFF II Cloud Sampling Program. The analysis indicates a mass loading ratio of about 7 at cloud stabilization (T+10 minutes) between the multiple and single burst dust clouds. Although, within the range of measurement uncertainties, this value may be comparable to that value of six predicted by linear superposition, photographic evidence of the multiple burst event strongly suggests this about 15 percent 'enhancement' in mass aloft may be real. Of greater importance, the analysis revealed that linearly superimposing six of the MBII single burst dust clouds resulted in a significant overestimation of average mass concentrations that were found in the multiple burst cloud. This overestimation appears to be due to the inability of linear superpostion to treat the effects of the hydrodynamic and thermodynamic interactions occurring between closely spaced detonations. Book excerpt: MISERS GOLD was a surface detonation of 2445 tons of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil blasting agent conducted by the Defense Nuclear Agency for a variety of research purposes. This report presents the results of an experiment designed to study the dust cloud over the 24-hour period following the detonation. The cloud was sampled by aircraft to obtain material needed to characterize the quantity of dust lofted, the source regions of the cloud, and the size, shape, and mineralogical characteristics of the particles. Elemental tracers and organic dyes were emplaced in the charge and in surrounding areas. Analyses were done by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA), fluorimetry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS). Tracer data define the source regions of the dust cloud. Extensive particle size distribution data were obtained. 12 figs.

Book excerpt: Dust clouds generated from two high explosive detonations of 100 and 600 tons (TNT equivalent) in the Misers Bluff II Experiment were sampled with an instrumented aircraft to determine the size and number density of particulates from 0.1 to 10,000 micrometers. The primary sizing techniques utilized 'in situ' optical methodology. High resolution dust concentration measurements were performed from approximately T + 3 to T + 60 minutes during both experiments. The total mass lofted integrated from these samples was found to be 0.80 x 10 (to the 9th power) gm for the experiment pair. Typical mass loadings were a few tenths of a gram per cubic meter. Visibilities to less than 100 meters were encountered with single pass optical depths 10-45 in the well developed cloud regions. The largest dust particles observed were only about 2 mm diameter. Organic particles up to 10 mm long are widely dispersed with the dust particles. Mean mass sizes of 90-160 micrometers are typical. Turbulence was light at even the earliest passes. Aircraft damage was restricted to injected dirt creating small but measurable engine wear.

The result was a vast body of poetry and prose that has been called hermetic, incomprehensible, even deranged. Of all this tragic generation of Russian poets (including Blok, Esenin, and Mayakovsky), Khlebnikov has been perhaps the most praised and the more censured. This first volume of the Collected Works, an edition sponsored by the Dia Art Foundation, will do much to establish the counterimage of Khlebnikov as an honest, serious writer. We read of the continuing involvement with his family throughout his vagabond life (pleas to his smartest sister, Vera, to break out of the mold, pleas to his scholarly father not to condemn and to send a warm overcoat); the naive pleasure he took in being applauded by other artists; his insistence that a young girl's simple verses be included in one of the typically outrageous Futurist publications of the time; his jealous fury at the appearance in Moscow of the Italian Futurist Marinetti; a first draft of his famous zoo poem ("O Garden of Animals!"); his seriocomic but ultimately shattering efforts to be released from army service; his inexhaustibly courageous confrontation with his own disease and excruciating poverty; and always his deadly earnest attempt to make sense of numbers, language, suffering, politics, and the exigencies of publication. The theoretical writings presented here are even more important than the letters to an understanding of Khlebnikov's creative output. In the scientific articles written before 1910, we discern foreshadowings of major patterns of later poetic work. In the pan-Slavic proclamations of 1908-1914, we find explicit connections between cultural roots and linguistic ramifications. In the semantic excursuses beginning in 1915, we can see Khlebnikov's experiments with consonants, nouns, and definitions spelled out in accessible, if arid, form. The essays of 1916-1922 take us into the future of Planet Earth, visions of universal order and accomplishment that no longer seem so farfetched but indeed resonate for modern readers.
