Book excerpt: Peter Trollope was a barber-surgeon. He carried on his useful art (for in his deft hands it was in truth an art) at the sign of the Pestle and Mortar, down against Sutton Pool. He was a great man in Plymouth town, by reason of his entertaining talk and his skill alike in surgery and in hairdressing; and his little shop was the lounging-place of all the idle young gallants of the port, who came in to discuss the latest news from London, to gossip about their neighbours' affairs and about the ships, or to learn the tricks and fashions in the new art of taking tobacco. Men who had received sword-wounds in street frays or damaged skulls in tavern brawls came to him to have their hurts dressed and plastered; he had a famous tincture[Pg 14] for the toothache, a certain remedy for melancholy, and at curing the common ailments of children and old women no doctor in the town could beat him. Mariners just home after a long voyage came to him to have their overgrown locks shorn and their beards singed. Poor workmen and apprentices came to him to be polled for twopence, were soon trimmed round as a cheese, and dismissed with a hearty "God speed you, my master!" There were many high and mighty gentlemen among his customers too, I do assure you; for he had starched the beard of the great Sir Walter Raleigh, curled the moustachios of brave Sir Francis Drake, and tied up the lovelocks of courtly Sir Anthony Killigrew.
Download or read book On the Family written by Pope Francis and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2015-11-30 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pope Francis has often expressed his concern for the urgent pastoral needs of families in today's society. Underscoring that deep love and concern for the family, the Pope has spent many months speaking on this subject in his weekly Wednesday audience talks. This book is a collection of all of those talks about the family from Dec. 17, 2014 to Sept. 16, 2015. The Pope covers a wide variety of important subjects directly related to family life, speaking in his personal style that offers wisdom and practical insights for the modern family. His words are for families in general, and also directed to the important roles of all those specific persons who make up family life - husbands, wives, parents, children and grandparents. He emphasizes the deep crisis that the family and marriage are undergoing in the Western world, and says that the family is "a new mission field for the Church." He challenges families today to be witnesses to the world of love, fidelity, and service. Some of the specific topics his talks address include: the example of the Holy Family of Nazareth; transmitting the faith; educating the children; family prayer; complementarity of male and female; celebration in family life; mercy and forgiveness; dealing with illness and death; learning the value of work; poverty and economic struggles; evangelizing the culture, and much more. Throughout his addresses, the Holy Father especially emphasizes the primary role of God and faith in family life, and the crucial importance of regular family prayer to draw on God's grace for strength, love, joy and unity within the home. "The true joy which we experience in the family is not superficial; it does not come from material objects, from the fact that everything seems to be going well. . . . True joy comes from a profound harmony between persons, something which we all feel in our hearts." - Pope Francis

This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If anything characterizes our times, it is a sense of pervading chaos. In every field of human endeavor, the windstorms of change are fast altering the ways we live. Contemporary man is no longer anchored in certainties and thus has lost sight of who he is, where he comes from and where he is going. If there is a single book that can shed light amid the postmodern darkness, this is it.

Download or read book The Unity and Threefold Expression of the Potestas Regiminis of the Diocesan Bishop written by Fredrik Hansen and published by Pontificio Istituto Biblico. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The one governing power of the diocesan Bishop is described - in cann 381 and 391 - as being the ordinary, proper and immediate potestas regiminis expressed as legislative, executive and judicial power for the exercise of the Bishop's pastoral office (munus pastorale). This doctoral dissertation - prepared under supervision of Prof. Gianfranco Ghirlanda SJ - presents and discusses the two central characteristics of the diocesan Bishop's power of governance: its unity and threefold expression. Therefore, the thesis considers the key features of the potestas regiminis in CIC 1917, Vatican II and CIC 1983 (ch.1); can. 381 1 on the unity and characteristics of this power as exercised by the diocesan Bishop (ch 2); the three expressions of the power of governance - legislative, executive and judicial power - in general, in ca. 135 and in can. 391 (ch.3); and a selection of issues that enable a more extensive understanding of this governing power of the diocesan Bishop (ch.4). Because the potestas regiminis of the diocesan Bishop articulates important ecclesiological points related to the Church, the particular Church and the Episcopal office in the Church, this dissertation may be characterised as being both an exegetical (analytical-comparative) study of two canons and a canonical-ecclesiological study of the governance of the diocesan Bishop.
Download or read book Instrumentum Laboris written by 3rd Extraordinary General Assembly and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2014-06-26 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Instrumentum Laboris is the (working document) for the 3rd Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops (to be held October 5-19) which focuses on “pastoral challenges to the family in the context of evangelization”.The Instrumentum Laboris consists of three parts. The first part focuses on the biblical and magisterial understanding of marriage, and features a heavy focus on the “natural law.” It also reflects on the role of the family today, the “fundamental cell of society, where we learn to live with others despite our differences and to belong to one another.”The second part concerns many pressing challenges to marriage and the family. These include cohabitation, remarried divorcees, teen motherhood, mixed-religion marriages, and same-sex unions. The final part deals with openness to life and parental responsibility. It explores how to transmit the faith to younger generations and how to form children in difficult or irregular family situations. This document will set the tone for October's anticipated Synod on the Family, and it deals with some of the most important issues today.
