Ces méthodes sont basées sur l'utilisation de réseaux de neurones artificiels pour l'approximation de fonctions à partir d'exemples. Une synthèse bibliographique des différentes applications des réseaux de neurones pour le contrôle de processus est présentée. Trois types d'utilisation des réseaux de neurones sont décrits : l'identification directe d'un système ou d'un contrôleur à partir d'exemples, l'identification d'un contrôleur grâce à l'algorithme de "rétropropagation à travers le temps" et, enfin, les méthodes d'apprentissage par renforcement. Cette dernière famille d'algorithmes est analysée en détail. Un nouvel algorithme d'apprentissage par renforcement baptisé "B-Learning" est proposé. L'originalité de cet algorithme réside dans l'estimation de "bénéfices" associés aux commandes. Ces bénéfices sont définis comme la variation au cours du temps de la qualité à long terme de l'état du système. Le B-Learning ainsi que d'autres algorithmes d'apprentissage par renforcement sont expérimentés sur un cas d'école, le pendule inverse, ainsi que sur une application industrielle : le contrôle d'une usine de production d'eau potable.

Une autre famille de modèles, plus évoluée, est celle des réseaux spatio-temporels. Les principales caractéristiques sont l'organisation hiérarchique de l'architecture en assemblées, groupes et neurones, le caractère local, continu et non-supervise de l'apprentissage, la considération d'une topologie spatiale intrinsèque, au nombre variable de dimensions et, dernièrement, mais pas le moins important, un fonctionnement temporel du réseau base sur des délais synaptiques variables. La structure du réseau est traversée par deux flux d'information: le flot longitudinal oriente de l'entrée vers la sortie et le flot latéral, dans chaque assemblée, produit par les interactions neuronales latérales. les expériences d'application effectuées, telles que la reconnaissance de l'écriture manuscrite, de la parole ou des trajectoires d'objets dans un flot vidéo sont autant de confirmations de la versatilité et des fonctionnalités offertes par les architectures spatio-temporelles étudiées

Dans le domaine de l’automatique les réseaux neuronaux artificiels, sont des systèmes adaptatifs et doués d’apprentissage. Ils trouvent des applications diverses dans la reconnaissance de formes, la fouille de données (data mining), le traitement du signal, le diagnostic. Ils sont définis principalement par une topologie, une fonction de seuillage et un algorithme d’apprentissage qui agit en faisant varier les poids synaptiques. L'objectif de cette thèse est d’étudier et de réaliser des connexions neuronales hybrides, afin d’en extraire des informations utiles aux recherches sur l’apprentissage et la plasticité synaptique. Ce travail se veut aussi une contribution à la mise en œuvre de la technique du dynamic-clamp. Cette technique récente reste peu utilisée car d’emploi ardu. Plusieurs expérimentations ont été menées au cours de cette thèse. Notamment, la greffe d’une synapse artificielle récurrente sur une cellule spontanément active à l'aide d'un prototype construit autour d’un DSP (Digital Signal processing). Nos travaux ont également conduit à faire interagir une cellule excitable et un perceptron doté d’un algorithme d’apprentissage artificiel. Enfin, ce travail ouvre des perspectives pour étendre cette étude sur une population de neurones en utilisant à cet effet une matrice de microélectrodes (MEA, Micro-Electrode Array).

Book excerpt: The book intends to give a state-of-the-art overview of flexoelectricity, a linear physical coupling between mechanical (orientational) deformations and electric polarization, which is specific to systems with orientational order, such as liquid crystals. Chapters written by experts in the field shed light on theoretical as well as experimental aspects of research carried out since the discovery of flexoelectricity. Besides a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity is also addressed. Electro-optic effects due to or modified by flexoelectricity as well as various (direct and indirect) measurement methods are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the role of flexoelectricity in pattern-forming instabilities. While the main focus of the book lies in flexoelectricity in nematic liquid crystals, peculiarities of other mesophases (bent-core systems, cholesterics, and smectics) are also reviewed. Flexoelectricity has relevance to biological (living) systems and can also offer possibilities for technical applications. The basics of these two interdisciplinary fields are also summarized.
