Book Miscellaneous Studies in the History of Music Classic Reprint

Download or read book Miscellaneous Studies in the History of Music Classic Reprint written by O. G. Sonneck and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Miscellaneous Studies in the History of Music This was certainly an amiable compliment. But it is evident from his letters that he longed for Vienna and its more opulent resources; for the Prague opera orchestra was, even in contemporary estimation, a very small one. The characteristic color of Mozart's instrumentation would not be Vitiated in the least if the Munich Intendant chose to augment his orchestra by eight or ten string-players. Even then the strings would number only twenty-two, against twelve wind-instruments and a drummer. The Introduction, and the Descent into Hell, would gain decidedly thereby, and the rest would lose nothing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Miscellaneous Studies in the History of Music Unlike my book "Suum cuique" this collection is devoted almost exclusively to historical studies. The one essay that is not mainly historical has been included for the purpose of showing why it is still impossible in America to attempt historical research work of the kind that attracted me, in any but exceedingly few of our most famous libraries. This lack of essential study material, whether antiquarian or modem, whether literature or scores, has been keenly felt even by those students of musical history who specialize in subjects of a more general local, biographical or evolutional interest. It indicates a sad state of affairs and explains why American contributions to musical history of more than "popular" and limited pedagogical value are so scanty; why, in comparison with Europe, those engaged here in scholarly research or codification of research are so few and why these few men and women have such a disheartening outlet for their life-work. Most of the essays in this volume were prepared from material available at the Library of Congress. Indeed, it is safe to say that whatever their intrinsic historical value may be, they could have been written nowhere in America except in Washington. They owe their origin mostly to minor historical problems that confronted me in my constructive work as Chief of the Music Division of the Library of Congress from 1902 to 1917. The essays are reprinted here, by permission, practically as they appeared in various magazines at the time of writing. I have not attempted to incorporate the subsequent "finds" of other historians. Variety Mates shows the musical stage in all its guises--from burlesque to musical comedy to grand opera--from its beginnings in pre-Revolutionary America to the present day. He introduces the reader to various types of theatrical companies, the changing repertory, and the many kinds of musical performers who have animated the stage. Mates focuses on the creative relationships between the different forms of opera, the minstrel show and circus, melodrama and dance, burlesque, revue, vaudeville, and musical comedy.

Book The Guitar in America

Download or read book The Guitar in America written by Jeffrey Noonan and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2008 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Guitar in America offers a history of the instrument from America\'s late Victorian period to the Jazz Age. The narrative traces America\'s BMG (banjo, mandolin, and guitar) community, a late nineteenth-century musical and com-mercial movement dedicated to introducing these instru-ments into America\'s elite musical establishments. Using surviving BMG magazines, the author details an almost unknown history of the guitar during the movement\'s heyday, tracing the guitar\'s transformation from a refined parlor instrument to a mainstay in jazz and popular music. In the process, he not only introduces musicians (including numerous women guitarists) who led the movement, but also examines new techniques and instruments. Chapters consider the BMG movement\'s impact on jazz and popular music, the use of the guitar to promote attitudes towards women and minorities, and the challenges foreign guitarists such as Miguel Llobet and Andres Segovia presented to America\'s musicians. This volume opens a new chapter on the guitar in America, considering its cultivated past and documenting how banjoists and mandolinists aligned their instruments to it in an effort to raise social and cultural standing. At the same time, the book considers the BMG community within America\'s larger musical scene, examining its efforts as manifestations of this country\'s uneasy coupling of musical art and commerce. Jeffrey J. Noonan, associate professor of music at Southeast Missouri State University, has performed professionally on classical guitar, Renaissance lute, Baroque guitar, and theorbo for over twenty-five years. His articles have appeared in Soundboard and NYlon Review .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Musical History IN presenting this little book to the public, I am actuated by the belief that it treats of subjects and periods of musical history with which the general reader is far from familiar. The voluminous charac ter of Dr. Burney's and Sir John Hawkins' histories of music are well calculated to damp the zeal of the most ardent disciple of the tone art, nor does a chron ological presentation of lives and facts offer any con crete view of 'the subject. Some men there are, who through their vast power of individuality have left their impress indelibly graven upon the art, and these stand out like beacon lights along the path of history; but their names are few, and it is with periods and institutions that we have to deal. Upon him who, in the succession of the centuries, does not Observe the sequence of cause and effect, the lessons of history are wasted, and its example thrown away. Say not Lo here, or 10 there, but laying a firm grasp upon the salient points, by a synthetic process arrive at the inner comprehension of the whole. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Secular music of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries encompasses an extraordinarily wide range of works and practices: courtly love songs, music for civic festivities, instrumental music, entertainments provided by minstrels, the unwritten traditions of solo singing, and much else. This collection of essays addresses many of these practices, with a focus on polyphonic settings of vernacular texts, examining their historical and stylistic contexts, their transmission in written and printed sources, questions of performance, and composers approaches to text setting. Essays have been selected to reflect the wide range of topics that have occupied scholars in recent decades, and taken together, they point to the more general significance of secular music within a broad complex of cultural practices and institutions.

Book Music and History Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Music and History This palatial music building is extraordinary even among the many sumptuous edifices possessed by some of our great music schools and conservatories. But what distinguishes it more than the eminently thoughtful and practical arrangement of its space is the instruction imparted within its walls. For this is a depart ment in a liberal arts college and not a school or conservatory of music. Needless to say, I do not wish to imply that an academic department of music is, by its very nature, superior to a school of music; it stands to reason that art comes first and its Study and criticism follow. What I mean is that in this country as in England, whence our collegiate system comes we tend to confuse the functions of the two institutions, with the result that music in the college, which 1s an institution of higher education (and perhaps even of learning), is often not taught as one of the liberal arts but as a skill, only tenuously related to the other subjects of instruction and intellectual endeavor. This college can take pride in the fact that it is not so at Vassar, for its music department puts to shame the under graduate division of many a great university. One man is re sponsible for this enlightened attitude. He not only virtually designed this building, but planned the curriculum, organized the fine library, and himself took charge of the historical courses that became models of their kind. I am happy to pay tribute to George Dickinson in his own home. Everyone knows about his achievements at Vassar, but he has done much more: he has vitally influenced the cause of musical education and scholarship all over the land. Now, as I turn to the business in hand, I do so with the feeling that lectures of this sort would not be delivered in our colleges were it not for his long and patient Work and determination to make music instruction in the college worthy of the sister disciplines.
