Book Marvell and Liberty

Download or read book Marvell and Liberty written by Martin Dzelzainis and published by Springer. This book was released on 1999-07-09 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marvell and Liberty is a collection of original essays by leading scholars which treats this major poet in an entirely new light. Uniquely, it gives equal attention to the full range of Marvell's writings. Marvell is a writer deeply implicated in the history of his time, and as the essays in this volume show, also exercised a potent political influence after his death. Marvell and Liberty constitutes a major reassessment of a figure who lived much of his life close to the epicentre of the revolutionary upheavals of the seventeenth century.

Book excerpt: The three series of Printed Writings (1500-1640, 1641-1700, and 1701-1750) provide a comprehensive, if not entirely complete, collection of separately published writings by women. In reprinting these writings it is intended to remedy one of the major obstacles to the advancement of feminist criticism of the early modern period, namely the unavailability of the very texts upon which the field is based. The volumes in the facsimile library reproduce carefully chosen copies of these texts, incorporating a short introduction providing an overview of the life and work of a writer along with a survey of important scholarship.Printed Writings 1641-1700, Series II, Part Three consists of twelve volumes of writings grouped by genre The set comprises the following titles:Volume 1: Katherine Philips (1632-1664): Printed Publications 1651-1664Volume 2: Katherine Philips (1632-1664): Printed Poems 1667Volume 3: Katherine Philips (1632-1664): Printed Letters 1697-172Volume 4: Miscellaneous Short Poetry, 1641-1700Volume 5: Elizabeth CellierVolume 6: Mary CarletonVolume 7: Anna WeamysVolume 8: Anna HumeVolume 9: Fiction of Unknown or Questionable Attribution I: Diotrephe and the Amorous AbbessVolume 10: Fiction of Unknown or Questionable Attribution II: Peppa and Alcander and PhilocratesVolume 11: Elinor JamesVolume 12: Delarivier Manley

Book Miscellanies Poetry and Authorship 1680 1800

Download or read book Miscellanies Poetry and Authorship 1680 1800 written by Carly Watson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-26 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a critical study of the ancestors of contemporary poetry anthologies: the poetic miscellanies of the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It argues that miscellanies are a distinctive kind of literary collection and that their popularity in the period 1680–1800 had a far-reaching impact on authors, publishers, and readers of poetry. This study expands the definition of miscellanies to include single-author collections called miscellanies as well as the multiple-author collections that have traditionally been the focus of scholarly attention. It shows how multiple-author miscellanies fostered different kinds of literary community and explores the neglected role of single-author miscellanies in the self-fashioning of eighteenth-century writers. Later chapters examine miscellanies’ relationships with periodicals, their contribution to the formation of the literary canon, and their reception and transformation in the hands of readers. The book draws on newly available digital data as well as evidence from hundreds of printed miscellanies to shed new light on how poetry was written, published, and read in the long eighteenth century.
