Book Miscellaneous Lectures and Reviews Classic Reprint

Download or read book Miscellaneous Lectures and Reviews Classic Reprint written by Richard Whately and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Miscellaneous Lectures and Reviews The following Lectures have already appeared in print, separately, at various times. But it has been suggested to me, that although they do not form a series, nor are connected in point of subject matter, still it may be, to some persons, desirable to have them collected together into a volume. They were delivered (some of them, more than once) at various times and places; but having been always addressed to a more or less mixed audience, they are in a popular style, and do not enter into any abstruse scientific disquisitions. Some Articles have been added, from the Quarterly Review, and from the London Review a Periodical which was discontinued after two numbers. As these Articles were written a good many years ago, some of them contain allusions to a state of things different from what exists now. But it may be to some readers not uninteresting to trace the changes which have since taken place, and to observe how far subsequent occurrences have confirmed or refined the opinions put forth several years before. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Miscellanea, Vol. 2 of 2: Comprising Reviews, Lectures, and Essays, on Historical, Theological, and Miscellaneous Subjects; Theological and Miscellaneous Yes, we are free to avow the belief that ours is, in some respects, an enlightened age. In certain points Of view, the present is far in advance of any preceding age. As far as mere earthly interests and comforts are concerned, we can boast Of great improvements over our more simple and unsophisticated ancestors. All the useful arts have attained a perfection never dreamed Of by them, even in their wildest reveries. In navigation, in commerce, and in ship-building in warlike accoutrements and in naval equipments in the facilities Of intercourse both by sea and by land and in the appliances Of domestic comfort; we are immeasurably ahead Of our forefathers in all past ages. We travel a thousand miles now in a shorter time, and with more comfort, than our ancestors did a hundred we traverse the ocean with as much facility as they did an arm Of the sea, or an inland lake. By the invention Of steam-navigation and the great improvements recently made therein, we have almost succeeded in annihilating time and space. We have brought the Whole world into close and intimate cor respondence. The Old and new worlds, once separated by an almost impassable gulf, are now brought almost into contact. The most ordinary articles Of our daily consumption, such as Spice, pepper, and tea, are brought from the very antipodes and, in return, we spread out before the antipodes our own products. Thus the very extremities of the globe are made near to each other; and the children Of the earth, inhabiting the remotest boundaries thereof, are brought together, and associate as brethren Of the same great family. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Miscellanea, Vol. 1 of 2: Comprising Reviews, Lectures, and Essays, on Historical, Theological, and Miscellaneous Subjects; Historical While I have sought carefully to revise all the papers contained in these Volumes - now amounting to forty-seven - I could not correct the style or modify the tone of them, without re-writing the whole; a task rendered impossible by numerous and engrossing occupations. As some Of them were written as far back as twenty years, it is but natural to suppose that they occasionally exhibit more spirit and heat in argu ment, than the cooler temper and riper taste of advancing years would fullv approve. While I am free to make this acknowledgment, justice to my own convictions and feelings requires me to state, that in regard to the facts alleged, I have nothing to retract or even materially to modify, and that in the tone and temper I do not even now believe, that I set down ought in malice, or with any other than the good intent of correcting error and establishing truth, without assuming the aggres sive, except for the sake of what I believed to be the legitimate defense of the Church of God. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular Lectures on 'the Essays and Reviews': Delivered in Various Places, and Addressed to the Common People Certain divines have fastened on some things hard to be understood, and have turned them into positive and absolute absurdities. These divines are ministers of a Church whose Articles are pre-eminently Protestant - whose martyrs and reformers have been among the most illustrious. No impartial person can fail to recognize great piety in many of her Bishops, great learning in many of her presbyters. The Essays and Reviews do not contain Church of England doctrine. The book, however, has become not celebrated, for that belongs to excellence, but pre-eminently notorious. Unitarian ministers are reading it from their pulpits, and boasting that the Church of England is coming over to them. The Bishops of that Church have met to consider, and as a body have condemned it. They have unanimously denounced the book; it would seem also to be their duty to depose the writers of it. Book What I Like About You

Download or read book What I Like About You written by Marisa Kanter and published by Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers. This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can a love triangle have only two people in it? Online, it can…but in the real world, its more complicated. In this debut novel that’s perfect for fans of Jenny Han and Morgan Matson, Marisa Kanter hilariously and poignantly explores what happens when internet friends turn into IRL crushes. Is it still a love triangle if there are only two people in it? There are a million things that Halle Levitt likes about her online best friend, Nash. He’s an incredibly talented graphic novelist. He loves books almost as much as she does. And she never has to deal with the awkwardness of seeing him in real life. They can talk about anything… Except who she really is. Because online, Halle isn’t Halle—she’s Kels, the enigmatically cool creator of One True Pastry, a YA book blog that pairs epic custom cupcakes with covers and reviews. Kels has everything Halle doesn’t: friends, a growing platform, tons of confidence, and Nash. That is, until Halle arrives to spend senior year in Gramps’s small town and finds herself face-to-face with real, human, not-behind-a-screen Nash. Nash, who is somehow everywhere she goes—in her classes, at the bakery, even at synagogue. Nash who has no idea she’s actually Kels. If Halle tells him who she is, it will ruin the non-awkward magic of their digital friendship. Not telling him though, means it can never be anything more. Because while she starts to fall for Nash as Halle…he’s in love with Kels.

This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters, Lectures, and Reviews, Including the Phrontisterion, or Oxford in the 19th Century The present volume contains the minor philosophical works of the late Dean Manse], nearly all his reviews, ' together with two articles hitherto unpublished, viz. The Lecture on Utility as the Ground of Moral Obligation, and the fragment on Berkeley's Philosophy, the completion of which was prevented by the decease of the author. The Phrontisterion has been added at the request of several friends. After some hesitation it was resolved to reprint this exquisite parody exactly as its author left it, rather than run the risk of spoiling its effect by explaining allusions which will be easily understood by all who are capable of enjoying such a droll combination of wit and learning. The matter enclosed in brackets is new, and has been derived from the Author's own ms. Notes, from which also a few verbal alterations in the original text have been made. The Editor's task has been confined solely to the correction of the press, and the addition of an occasional reference. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures and Essays All the articles in the present volume have appeared in print already, except the lecture on Madvig. This lecture and a fragment of an edition of inonius Marcellus were the only unpublished materials left by Mr. Nettleship in a state ready to be printed as his work. The lecture on Madvig is accordingly printed below: the critical notes on Nonius will appear in the journal of Philology. In editing the papers I have verified all references and quota tions, added a few references and half a dozen notes in square brackets: further changes were obviously out of place. I have to thank Messrs. Rivington Percival, Messrs. Kegan Paul, Trench Co., Mr. Walter Scott, and the editors and publishers of the journal of Philology, the American journal of Philology, and the International journal of Ethics for leave to reprint various essays, as indicated at the commencement of each essay.
