Download or read book Miscellanea XII Classic Reprint written by Catholic Record Society and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Miscellanea XII R.o Domestic, Elizabeth, cxix, 20. The following original paper is both an analysis and a summary of the various reports. Some of these are now wanting, that is Suffolk, Durham and Northumberland. Devon and Cambridge seem never to have been returned. The Welsh dioceses, though left blank in the summary, have some short returns. The diocese of Carlisle (cumberland and Westmorland) is not even mentioned in the list; Bristol appears to be included under Bath and Wells. Book Timaeus of Tauromenium and Hellenistic Historiography

Download or read book Timaeus of Tauromenium and Hellenistic Historiography written by Christopher A. Baron and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Timaeus of Tauromenium (350-260 BC) wrote the authoritative work on the Greeks in the Western Mediterranean and was important through his research into chronology and his influence on Roman historiography. Like almost all the Hellenistic historians, however, his work survives only in fragments. This book provides an up-to-date study of his work and shows that both the nature of the evidence and modern assumptions about historical writing in the Hellenistic period have skewed our treatment and judgement of lost historians. For Timaeus, much of our evidence is preserved in the polemical context of Polybius' Book 12. When we move outside that framework and examine the fragments of Timaeus in their proper context, we gain a greater appreciation for his method and his achievement, including his use of polemical invective and his composition of speeches. This has important implications for our broader understanding of the major lines of Hellenistic historiography.

Book Love Hate and the Law in Tudor England

Download or read book Love Hate and the Law in Tudor England written by L. R. Poos and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-07-21 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love, Hate, and the Law in Tudor England reconstructs the life of Ralph Rishton, a member of the sixteenth-century Lancashire gentry who was a child bridegroom and a serial wife-discarder, who bribed church officials to obtain a forged annulment, defrauded a kinsman out of his inheritance, and adroitly manipulated his own and other people's land. The dozens of lawsuits in which the Rishtons were involved, in many different courts, elucidate one family's engagement with law in Tudor England: how they used and misused law, how it shaped their perceptions of rights and mutual obligations, and how it framed litigants' and witnesses' language. Drawing upon trial and estate records, the core of this study is the central narrative of Ralph Rishton's three wives, of litigiousness and violence, marriage and property, and the pursuit of equitable resolutions to disputes, along with countless smaller narratives that vividly capture a culture in its time and place. Alongside that central narrative, L. R. Poos uses the Rishton stories as a starting-point to analyse child marriage, the construction of memory, and the development of local historical identity through antiquarians and the Victorian and Edwardian local press, demonstrating how - from the time of the Rishtons into the twentieth century - historical narratives were continually reshaped and repurposed.
