Book Pseudoscience and Deception

Download or read book Pseudoscience and Deception written by Bryan Farha and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2013-12-24 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pseudoscience and Deception is a compilation of some of the most eye-opening skeptical articles pertaining to extraordinary claims and pseudoscience. The articles explore paranormal, extraordinary, or fringe-science claims and reveal logical explanations or outline the deceptive tactics involved in convincing the vulnerable. Topics include claims of astrology, psychic ability, alternative medicine, after-death communication, psychotherapy, and pseudoscience. The contributors to this book are among the most accomplished critical thinkers, scientists, and educators in the world and tackle their respective topics from a rational, logical, and skeptical perspective. Most students are seldom excited to study “critical thinking”—with the exception of allegedly paranormal phenomena as the subject matter. Educators must seize this golden opportunity to witness and experience students’ genuine engagement in studying critical thinking.

As a professional working with families ravaged by addiction, and as a member of Al-Anon seeking to grow and be a good steward of the life experiences that are mine, I am challenged by this book to seek ways to apply its techniques with clients and my own life...Ms. England's book reminds me in the particularly memorable way of any good story...that there is both danger and delight in this activity of living.

This book was released on 2010-05-28 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2008 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 2,0, University of Marburg (Fremdsprachliche Philologien), course: Proseminar The Short Story in English Speaking Canada, language: English, abstract: The couple described in “Mirrors” has decided to live without mirrors during summer, while spending their time in their summer house at Big Circle Lake. This cohabitation turns out to be not as harmoniously as the rest of the world sees it. The absence of mirrors causes several problems both partners try to deal with by themselves. This paper shall be concerned with the image of mirrors in the story, regarding especially the concealment and revelation it symbolizes. Therefore the image of the mirror in general has to be viewed. Afterwards the mirrorless summer house has to be examined as well as the couple, which deliberately lives without mirrors. In addition special scenes will be analysed. After looking at the couple, the usage of mirrors in the story play an important role to find an answer to the question if the deliberate mirrorlessness reminds both partners of their better selves.

Book When Collaboration Mirrors the Trinity

Download or read book When Collaboration Mirrors the Trinity written by Avery Stafford and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “That they all may be one” was Jesus’ first-century prayer. With mind and emotions set towards Golgotha, he poured out his heart to the Father. But what is our twenty-first-century reality? Local churches are siloed. Pastors do not know one another and rarely work together. Christians drive by church buildings on their way to Sunday worship and seldom pray for one another. Vitriolic disunity spews across social media in front of an onlooking world. Our culture sees our fractured reality and increasingly dismisses Christianity as a viable option for their lives. And it is time for believers to recognize that it is our fault. But there is hope! When Collaboration Mirrors the Trinity is a timely invitation for local churches to make the practice of unity our new normal. Avery Stafford presents a biblical model to actualize this invitation. He details four rhythms that mirror the loving community of the Triune God. Each one can help pastors, lay leaders, and faith communities deepen their resolve to bless the world through effective gospel partnerships. This work is a bold call for believers to discover an untapped resource for the gospel—the believers who attend other churches in their city.

Book The Roman de la Rose and Thirteenth Century Thought

Download or read book The Roman de la Rose and Thirteenth Century Thought written by Jonathan Morton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-16 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thirteenth-century allegorical dream vision, the Roman de la Rose, transformed how medieval literary texts engaged with philosophical ideas. Written in Old French, its influence dominated French, English and Italian literature for the next two centuries, serving in particular as a model for Chaucer and Dante. Jean de Meun's section of this extensive, complex and dazzling work is notable for its sophisticated responses to a whole host of contemporary philosophical debates. This collection brings together literary scholars and historians of philosophy to produce the most thorough, interdisciplinary study to date of how the Rose uses poetry to articulate philosophical problems and positions. This wide-ranging collection demonstrates the importance of the poem for medieval intellectual history and offers new insights into the philosophical potential both of the Rose specifically and of medieval poetry as a whole.

Book Soliloquies

    Book Details:
  • Author : Saint Augustine
  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 2020-10-27
  • ISBN : 0300255772
  • Pages : 325 pages

Download or read book Soliloquies written by Saint Augustine and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-27 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fresh, new translation of Augustine’s fourth work as a Christian convert The first four works written by St. Augustine of Hippo after his conversion to Christianity are dialogues that have influenced prominent thinkers from Boethius to Bernard Lonergan. Usually called the Cassiciacum dialogues, these four works are of a high literary and intellectual quality, combining Ciceronian and neo-Platonic philosophy, Roman comedy and Vergilian poetry, and early Christian theology. They are also, arguably, Augustine’s most charming works, exhibiting his whimsical levity and ironic wryness. Soliloquies is the fourth work in this tetralogy. Augustine coined the term “soliloquy” to describe this new form of dialogue. Soliloquies, a conversation between Augustine and his reason, fuses the dialogue genre and Roman theater, opening with a search for intellectual and moral self-knowledge before converging on the nature of truth and the question of the soul’s immortality. Foley’s volume also includes On the Immortality of the Soul, which consists of notes for the unfinished portion of the work.

Book Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature

Download or read book Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature written by Richard Rorty and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2008-12-29 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it first appeared in 1979, Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature hit the philosophical world like a bombshell. In it, Richard Rorty argued that, beginning in the seventeenth century, philosophers developed an unhealthy obsession with the notion of representation: comparing the mind to a mirror that reflects reality. Rorty's book is a powerful critique of this imagery and the tradition of thought that it spawned. Today, the book remains a must-read and stands as a classic of twentieth-century philosophy. Its influence on the academy, both within philosophy and across a wide array of disciplines, continues unabated. This edition includes new essays by philosopher Michael Williams and literary scholar David Bromwich, as well as Rorty's previously unpublished essay "The Philosopher as Expert."

Book Computing Bodies

Download or read book Computing Bodies written by Claude Draude and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-13 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Claude Draude analyzes embodied software agents – interface solutions that are designed to talk back and give emotional feedback – from a gender and media studies perspective. She addresses technological and sociocultural concepts in their interplay of shifting the boundary between what is considered as human and what as machine. The author discusses the technological realization of specific personality models that define the design of embodied software agents – emotion and gaze models, in particular. Finally, she explores these models in their broader cultural context by relating them to the prominent topic of the Turing test and the notion of the Uncanny Valley.
