Book Studies of Ice Etching

Download or read book Studies of Ice Etching written by Daisuke Kuroiwa and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermal etching of ice and its application to the investigation of surface abrasion in ice crystals is explained. Investigations of surface abrasion in ice crystals provide fundamental information in the study of snow and ice friction. The technique of producing evaporation etch pits by the application of Formvar film to the ice crystal surface is described, and the development of microcrystals by recrystallization is compared with the surrounding mother crystals. Experimental data are presented and discussed with emphasis on the development of thermal etch pits, scratches on different crystal faces, damage to the prismatic face, thermal etch channels on the basal plane, predominant orientation of etch channels on the basal plane, and etch-pit-free zones and stress concentrations around solid inclusions. Book excerpt: The work of French Philosopher Luce Irigaray has exerted a profound influence on feminist thinking of recent decades and provides a far-reaching challenge to western philosophy's entrenched patriarchal norms. This book guides the reader through Irigaray's critical and creative transformation of western thought. Through detailed analysis of her most important text, Speculum of the Other Woman, Rachel Jones carefully examines Irigaray's transformative readings of such icons of the western tradition as Plato, Descartes, Kant and Hegel. She shows that these readings underpin Irigaray's claim that western philosophy has been dependent on the forgetting of both sexual difference and of our singular beginnings in birth. In response, Irigaray seeks to recover a positive account of sexual difference which would release woman from her traditional position as the 'other' of the subject and allow her to speak as a subject in her own right. In a sensitive reading of Irigaray's work, Jones shows why this distinctively feminist project necessarily involves the transformation of the fundamental terms of western metaphysics. By foregrounding Irigaray's approach to questions of otherness and alterity, she concludes that, for Irigaray, cultivating an ethics of sexuate difference is the condition of ethical relations in general. Lucidly and persuasively written, this book will be an invaluable resource for students and scholars seeking to understand Irigaray's original contribution to philosophical and feminist thought.

Book Mirror Mirror

  • Pages : 192 pages

Download or read book Mirror Mirror written by Thirteen Press and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-02-23 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mirrors are fascinating. They reflect everything accurately the things that are in front of them, or do they? Scientists were at one time attempting to create a mirror which showed everything the way the viewer would see it, not the back-to-front reflection we are used to. Quite what that would do to our minds is anyone's guess... Mirrors can be menacing. They can reveal our innermost fears - sometimes showing us those fears in ghastly and horrific forms. Mirrors can speak, according to the fairy tale, giving the viewer what she wanted up to a point, until it no longer became the truth. Mirrors hold many secrets. This anthology reveals some of those secrets and horrors as the talented writers who have allowed me to use their work explore in tales of woe, blood, gore and murder. Here are the real nasties hiding behind the silvered backs of seemingly innocuous mirrors. Look in them at your peril.

Book The Idea of North

Download or read book The Idea of North written by Peter Davidson and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2005-04-15 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While a compass might tell us which direction we are going, there is really only one direction to which it ever points: north. North is the ultimate point of orientation, but it is also a celebrated destination for the adventurous, the curious, the solitary, and the foolhardy. In this fascinating book—updated in this accessible, pocket edition—Peter Davidson explores the concept of “north” through its many manifestations in painting, legend, and literature. Arctic bound, Davidson takes the reader on a journey from the heart of society to the most far-flung outposts of human geography, packing in our rucksacks a treasure trove of stories and artworks, from the Icelandic Sagas to Nabokov’s snowy kingdom of Zembla, from Hans Christian Andersen’s forbidding Snow Queen to the works of artists such as Eric Ravilious, Ian Hamilton Finlay, and Andy Goldsworthy. He celebrates the different ways our artists and writers have illuminated our relationship with the earth’s most dangerous and austere terrain. Through Davidson’s astonishing but inviting erudition, we ultimately come to see north as a permanent goal, frozen forever on a horizon we never seem to quite reach.
