Book excerpt: In ancient times it is believed that a legendary Emerald Tablet existed, one that was said to contain an encoded message written by Hermes 'the father of philosophers' himself. It contained the words of direction known as 'the operation of the Sun', that if one followed with accuracy the method described, that individual would obtain the glory of the whole world, the power of power, wisdom that could not be limited by any obscurity, and the ability to overcome any subtle or great matter. There is a catch however, to obtain it, one must first understand it. It was a riddle and the key to solving this particular riddle has been plaguing philosophers and scientists for millennia. It is the secret to a long standing question. How can one obtain the philosophers' stone? and even more, what is it? Within these pages are a collection of works that answer these very questions. The blueprint of the philosopher stone is obtainable first by the study of philosophy and also through the study of nature. A student of alchemy; philosophy & chemistry, can learn to seek the truth of natural science and discover the secret which only few men have been able to achieve. It starts first with understanding, then continued experimentation. This volume contains several books that will, together, help the student in the pursuit of understanding the blueprint. The ancient books contained in this volume have been heavily edited and translated into modern English interpretation with annotations and definitions as well. The books are as follows: *The Mirror of Alchemy *The Emerald Table of Hermes *The Commentary of Hortulanus *The Book of the Secrets of Alchemy *Treatise on The Admirable Force and Efficacy of Art and Nature In these books one will better understand the following topics: The definitions of Alchemy Natural Principles & Procreation of Minerals The parts of the Stone The four Elements contained within the Stone Modification and Cleansing the Stone The work of Alchemy imitates the Creation of the world Why the Stone is said to be Perfect Difficulty in the Art The four Masteries of the Art: Solution, Congelation, Albification and Rubification How to fix the Spirit Separating the Elements There is only one Stone, his nature. How to make the Stone white Conversion of the Stone to red On the cryptography and symbolism of ancient texts The Philosophy of Alchemy

Book excerpt: How cultural categories shaped--and were shaped by--new ideas about controlling nature Ranging from alchemy to necromancy, "books of secrets" offered medieval readers an affordable and accessible collection of knowledge about the natural world. Allison Kavey's study traces the cultural relevance of these books and also charts their influence on the people who read them. Citing the importance of printers in choosing the books' contents, she points out how these books legitimized manipulating nature, thereby expanding cultural categories, such as masculinity, femininity, gentleman, lady, and midwife, to include the willful command of the natural world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illuminating selections from Jung’s writings on alchemy and the transformation of the human spirit The ancient practice of alchemy, which thrived in Europe until the seventeenth century, dealt with the phenomenon of transformation—not only of ore into gold but also of the self into Other. Through their work in the material realm, alchemists discovered personal rebirth as well as a linking between outer and inner dimensions. C. G. Jung first turned to alchemy for personal illumination in coping with trauma brought on by his break with Freud. Alchemical symbolism eventually suggested to Jung that there was a process in the unconscious, one that had a goal beyond discharging tension and hiding pain. In this book, Nathan Schwartz-Salant brings together key selections of Jung’s writings on the subject. These writings expose us to Jung’s fascinating reflections on the symbols of alchemy—such as the three-headed Mercurial dragon, hermaphrodites, and lions devouring the sun—and brings us closer to the spirit of his approach to the unconscious, closer than his purely scientific concepts often allow.

Book Darke Hierogliphicks

Download or read book Darke Hierogliphicks written by Stanton J. Linden and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-05-11 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literary influence of alchemy and hermeticism in the work of most medieval and early modern authors has been overlooked. Stanton Linden now provides the first comprehensive examination of this influence on English literature from the late Middle Ages through the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Drawing extensively on alchemical allusions as well as on the practical and theoretical background of the art and its pictorial tradition, Linden demonstrates the pervasiveness of interest in alchemy during this three-hundred-year period. Most writers—including Langland, Gower, Barclay, Eramus, Sidney, Greene, Lyly, and Shakespeare—were familiar with alchemy, and references to it appear in a wide range of genres. Yet the purposes it served in literature from Chaucer through Jonson were narrowly satirical. In literature of the seventeenth century, especially in the poetry of Donne, Herbert, Vaughan, and Milton, the functions of alchemy changed. Focusing on Bacon, Donne, Herbert, Vaughan, and Milton—in addition to Jonson and Butler—Linden demonstrates the emergence of new attitudes and innovative themes, motifs, images, and ideas. The use of alchemy to suggest spiritual growth and change, purification, regeneration, and millenarian ideas reflected important new emphases in alchemical, medical, and occultist writing. This new tradition did not continue, however, and Butler's return to satire was contextualized in the antagonism of the Royal Society and religious Latitudinarians to philosophical enthusiasm and the occult. Butler, like Shadwell and Swift, expanded the range of satirical victims to include experimental scientists as well as occult charlatans. The literary uses of alchemy thus reveal the changing intellectual milieus of three centuries.

Book Alchemy and Artifacts Tesseracts Twenty Two

Download or read book Alchemy and Artifacts Tesseracts Twenty Two written by Lorina Stephens and published by EDGE Science Fiction and Fantasy Publishing, Incorporated. This book was released on 2019-08-05 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is nothing new in the world except the history we do not know. Alchemy and Artifacts (Tesseracts Twenty-Two) is a collection of twenty-three amazing stories based on historical artifacts combined with fantastic historical fiction. The stories meld culture, concept and incident into a rich collection of 'what if' speculations that provide warnings yet revel in the cultural celebrations we continue to observe today. They are the touchstones that resonate with all who listen to and learn from the past. For, once the instigators are dead, the wars ended, and the political machines decayed, only artifacts remain. And it's through these cultural artifacts that we glimpse the possibility of what may have occurred in the past and may yet occur in the future. You are invited to delve into the motivations behind the events of the past, the quests for power, the fights against repression, and the sacrifices to a greater cause -- human dramas that reflect the worst and best of who we are -- to see what satisfaction comes from sudden insight and awe. Featuring works by these Canadian writers: Colleen Anderson, Lara Apps, Leslie Brown, Katherine Cameron, Chris Patrick Carolan, Geoff Gander & Fiona Plunkett, Bev Geddes, Mary-Jean Harris, Geoffrey Hart, Kate Heartfield, R. W. Hodgson, Kurt Kirchmeier, Jason Lane, Halli Lilburn, Cat McDonald, Tony Pi, Mike Rimar, Bianca Sayan, Holly Schofield, Michael Skeet, Erik Jon Spigel, Liz Westbrook-Trenholm, Michal Wojcik The stories in Alchemy and Artifacts (Tesseracts Twenty-Two) nourish those who wander in today's wilderness, and who, without the benefit of the past, are destined to plunge blindly along a path of ignorance, destroying all that has been, everything that is true and beautiful and that which nourishes our global community.

Book excerpt: Here in one slender volume is a basic introduction to Chinese alchemy—a tradition that dates back 5,000 years. Chinese alchemy, largely associated with Taoism, has a recorded history of more than 2,000 years, but traditionally it goes back even further to nearly 3000 BC and the time of the Yellow Emperor. While Western alchemy was concerned with the search for spiritual and material gold, classic Taoist alchemy was a mystical quest for immortality with its aim being union with the Absolute. Jean Cooper describes the history and development of Taoist alchemy, compares it to similar traditions in India and Turkistan, and gives it context by contrasting it with the rationale of the Western hermetic tradition. As she writes in her concluding chapter: The whole work of alchemy is summed up in the phrase "To make of the body a spirit and of the spirit a body". . . . The goal of the Taoist alchemist-mystic was transformation, or perhaps more correctly, transfiguration, of the whole body until it ceases to "be" and is absorbed into and becomes the Tao. This is an essential guide for anyone interested in Chinese legend and lore, Chinese magic and medicine, and Taoism.
