Book excerpt: Miriam Barber Judd was a missionary, a college-educated woman, a mother, a deeply faithful woman, and a strong leader for the empowerment of women. Yet the role she was most known for, at least publicly, was as the wife of Congressman Walter H. Judd. In this role, she had tea with Eleanor Roosevelt, lunch with Mamie Eisenhower, went boating with the Kennedys, met dignitaries and movie stars, and became friends with the Nixons. In this deeply moving collection of letters, we see the depth of this amazing woman's life. We see her as the young woman living in China in the midst of incredible civil turmoil, where she clung to her children while fleeing across the countryside to escape invasion by the Japanese. We see her yearning to be with a husband whose passion for human service keeps him at a great distance. Through her private writings, we see her fears as she raises three young daughters-practically alone. We see the tension between being dutiful wife and conflicted mistress to a man's work. We see the strife of being an educated, strong woman at a time when a woman's purpose was to keep house. "Miriam's Words: The Personal Price of a Public Life" is more than a collection of letters-it is history unfolding. It is the evolution of human rights, women's rights, and civil rights. It is the journey of one woman who was prepared for anything, but reluctant about the direction of her husband's life in public service. Through her strength, her faith, her work with the YWCA-we clearly see the woman behind the man. "Miriam's Words" is a poignant, first-person, real-time account of a woman who set out to right wrongs, to make a difference, and to lead the way for generations to come.

Saladin, a Muslim sultan, finds himself pitted against King Richard the Lionheart as Islam and Christianity clash against each other, launching a conflict that still echoes today. In the midst of a brutal and unforgiving war, Saladin finds forbidden love in the arms of Miriam, a beautiful Jewish girl with a tragic past. But when King Richard captures Miriam, the two most powerful men on Earth must face each other in a personal battle that will determine the future of the woman they both love—and of all civilization. Richly imagined, deftly plotted, and highly entertaining, Shadow of the Swords is a remarkable story that will stay with readers long after the final page has been turned.

Book Becoming Women of the Word

Download or read book Becoming Women of the Word written by Sarah Christmyer and published by Ave Maria Press. This book was released on 2019-08-02 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of a 2020 Catholic Press Association book award (third place, scripture-popular studies). The women God called to bring his chosen people into the world were ordinary women who struggled with emptiness, oppression, infertility, and loss—yet who found strength and hope in God. In her first book, Sarah Christmyer—codeveloper of The Great Adventure Catholic Bible study program—pairs the stories of key Old Testament women with stories of women she has known to show us how we can hear God, say yes to his call, and share him with the world just as they did. Breaking open the scriptures to reveal the historical, cultural, and biblical context in which Old Testament women lived, Sarah Christmyer breathes new life into their stories and makes their lives surprisingly relatable. In the process, she shares stories from her own faith journey and the lives of family and friends to show how the same principles that turned ordinary women into heroines of the faith are true for our lives today. Each chapter of Becoming Women of the Word highlights the spiritual legacy of one or more women in the Old Testament. Their world was vastly different from ours, yet they faced the same questions we do: when we can’t feel God’s presence, where do we find help? When our world is collapsing, where is God? Why should we trust him? How can we trust him? Christmyer simply and clearly draws from the lives of these women important principles that help us to trust—even as we struggle with doubt. For example: Through Eve, we learn to hold on to God’s promise even when we fail. Sarah reminds us to wait on God’s timing to make us fruitful. Miriam, the sister of Moses, shows how to lead by example. Ruth and Esther challenge us to see womanhood as a gift. Hannah and Judith inspire us to trust God even in matters of life and death. These unforgettable portraits create a colorful mosaic of faith, encouraging us to mine God’s Word for spiritual treasure and to pass on the gift.

Book Swords and Cinema

Download or read book Swords and Cinema written by Jeremaih McCall and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2015-01-14 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The battles and sieges of the Classical world have been a rich source of inspiration to film makers since the beginning of cinema and the 60s and 70s saw the golden age of the 'swords and sandals' epic, with films such as Spartacus. Ridley Scott's Gladiator led a modern revival that has continued with the release of films like 300, The Eagle and Centurion and HBO's mini-series Rome. While Hollywood interpetations of Classical battle continue to spark interest in ancient warfare, to casual viewers and serious enthusiasts alike they also spark a host of questions about authenticity. What does Hollywood get right and wrong about weapons, organization, tactics and the experience of combat? Did the Spartans really fight clad only in their underpants and did the Persians have mysterious, silver-masked assassins in their armies? This original book discusses the merits of battle scenes in selected movies and along the way gives the reader an interesting overview of ancient battle. It should appeal to the serious student of ancient warfare, movie buffs and everyone in between.

Book excerpt: Dont believe the hype; believe what you see. Apocalypse, as we have come to fear, is not apocalypse as it truly is. We live today in the time of apocalypse, and for some, it is pure torment. For those around the world living with bombs raining down on them, yes, that is apocalyptic torture as we feared. For those thousands and millions, throughout the universe, visited and killed by the deadly flu and flu-like diseases (SARS, swine flu, bird flu, West Nile virus, etc.), Ebola, tuberculosis, measles, cholera, dengue fever, EV-D68, and HIV/AIDS, yes, those are apocalyptic diseases as we feared. For those ravished, killed, left homeless, and totally dispossessed by these record-breaking seemingly wicked weather events we are currently experiencing, yes, they would agree that these are for certain apocalyptic changes as we feared. However, given there are over seven billion of us on the planet and those apocalyptic events mentioned have only killed millions, not billions, of us, they dont seem to rise to the level of chaos and destruction we have been conditioned to fear as being apocalyptic. Nevertheless, our over exaggerated, deep-seated, and conditioned fears notwithstanding, Armageddon is upon us, and the signs of it have been for almost twenty years that we know of. Those above mentioned apocalyptic occurrences are the signs we were all told would be by John the Revelator in Revelation. November 1995 to May 1996, no fewer than seventy of us were told by an angel, Awaki, and his Angels of God that the signs had already begun and that Armageddon would begin in the year 2000. Our story, no matter how far-fetched it may seem, is true. The evidentiary events of war, disease, and bizarre weather changes we witness daily provide for us the credibility of what we were told. The angel Shakardak told us, Some will see and they will believe, some will not see and they will believe, some will hear and they will believe, and some will not hear and they will believe; and then there will be those who will see and they will not believe, and there will be those who will hear and they will not believe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The constable had ducked under the lintel and cautiously edged his way into the property with a stolidness becoming of his twenty-two years of police service. What he had discovered inside had brought him staggering out again, pale and staring, the sweet taste of vomit rising in his throat.” In April 2010, the brutal murders of distillery owner, Duncan Fraser, and his wife Laura, shock the small rural community of Glenruthven in the Scottish Highlands. The ensuing police investigation unearths an ancient clan feud… and a mystery dating back to 1746 and the Battle of Culloden. Detective Inspector Neil Strachan, who we first met in Clive’s first novel, The Drumbeater, once again finds himself delving into the past, as he and his partner, Sergeant Holly Anderson, go head to head with a ruthless and violent criminal, apparently obsessed with his Jacobite ancestry. Strachan also faces problems of his own. His long-term partner is acting strangely, causing him to suspect that she is having an affair. His determination to bring the Frasers’ killer to justice, and to uncover the truth behind his erring partner’s behaviour, take him on a journey to a place he never wanted to be. It is a place where his personal and professional priorities become blurred; a place where both his judgement and reputation are on the line. The Well of the Dead is not the usual dysfunctional, urban detective novel, but one in which the adventures are played out amongst the rugged beauty of Britain’s last great wilderness. Inspired by Mark Billingham, Brian Callison and Elly Griffiths, Clive Allan’s latest novel is a gripping crime thriller with an historical twist. It will primarily appeal to readers of Scottish and detective fiction. Clive’s first novel, The Drumbeater, received large amounts of media attention and was featured in Scots News, The Scots Magazine, Narpo News, Scottish Field Magazine and Police World. “A gripping and intelligent tale which seamlessly spans 250 years told through wonderfully authentic characters. Superb!” – Graham Bartlett, Times bestselling co-author of Death Comes Knocking.
