Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mirage, 1910 It is not of coeducation, however, in this restricted sense that I wish to speak. Coeducation literally means something more than this: it means the education of people together, or in groups. Really this is the one true kind of education. To be sure, the scholar must have his moments when he withdraws to his study and to his laboratory. To be sure, there are some things that can only befound as men work as individuals. After all, however, we live in a world of persons. The results of the most secluded study are of value out in the world at large, and the man who is going to serve the world at large must have a sympathetic understanding of his fellows. We used to hear a great deal said in praise of the self - made man. A keen critic once remarked, however, that the trouble with the self - made man is that he is too apt to worship his maker. There is large force in this criticism. The man whose training has been away from his fellows does not see things in true perspective, and his perspective fails simply because he judges too much by himself. He does not go to the outer edge of the circle and look back toward the center. In college a man is not apt to remain self-centered for lollg. If he does not see his own faults speedily his fellow-students are apt to point therri out for him. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. He was only a young man when he gave himself and his labors to be used for his country; and through all his labors and sufferings we see not the least sign of a selfish desire for honor or praise. It was he who first put the wheels of the government in motion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Mirage Vol 7 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Mirage Vol 7 Classic Reprint written by De Pauw University and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mirage, Vol. 7 Juniors, and'the preparation of a class-day play by the Seniors. It is in accordance with the former of these customs that the present Junior class issues the current volume of the mirage. It has been the aim of the editors to show college life, to point out the relations of the students to each other, to the University, and to the faculty; and to make plain the faults and merits of the institution as viewed by the student body. The editors have not considered themselves a self-appointed board of correction, whose duty it is to supervise the general administration of the University. Neither have they thought it advisable to ignore those things which the students, generally, consider as detrimental to their best interests. The editors hold that it is the purpose of an annual to bring about a better understanding between the students on the one side and the faculty, trustees and alumni on the other; and to this end they have directed their efforts. Many events of importance to the University mark the period that has intervened since the publication of the '96 mirage. Dr. John, whose merit as a man and scholar is recognized, not only in the University, but throughout this and adjoining states, has seen fit to resign the presidency, and has entered the lecture field. Sorry as the students are to lose the services of Dr. John, yet it is with, if possible, even greater respect and confidence that they turn to his successor, Dr. Gobin. His mild but firm discipline, his enthusiasm in student affairs, his belief in honor, which placed a student's wordabove circumstantial proof, coupled with his strong administration of the University's affairs, have won the love and confidence of every loyal student. Under Dr. Gobin's administration there has been the most complete union of faculty and students that has been seen in the University in a decade. Knowing, as the students do, that they have the confidence of their president and teachers, they have borne in quiet the irksome rules which a Board of Trustees has imposed upon society and social events at De Pauw; rules well fitted to a graded school, but scarcely applicable to men and women with years and ability sufficient to give them a place as thinkers in the ranks of high er education. We regret that these rules, once banished to the realm of the obsolete, along with the Sunday-afternoon lecture and the text book recitation, have been disinterred, and, with the addition of others still more ancient, again thrust upon us. Book Economics in One Lesson

Download or read book Economics in One Lesson written by Henry Hazlitt and published by Crown Currency. This book was released on 2010-08-11 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With over a million copies sold, Economics in One Lesson is an essential guide to the basics of economic theory. A fundamental influence on modern libertarianism, Hazlitt defends capitalism and the free market from economic myths that persist to this day. Considered among the leading economic thinkers of the “Austrian School,” which includes Carl Menger, Ludwig von Mises, Friedrich (F.A.) Hayek, and others, Henry Hazlitt (1894-1993), was a libertarian philosopher, an economist, and a journalist. He was the founding vice-president of the Foundation for Economic Education and an early editor of The Freeman magazine, an influential libertarian publication. Hazlitt wrote Economics in One Lesson, his seminal work, in 1946. Concise and instructive, it is also deceptively prescient and far-reaching in its efforts to dissemble economic fallacies that are so prevalent they have almost become a new orthodoxy. Economic commentators across the political spectrum have credited Hazlitt with foreseeing the collapse of the global economy which occurred more than 50 years after the initial publication of Economics in One Lesson. Hazlitt’s focus on non-governmental solutions, strong — and strongly reasoned — anti-deficit position, and general emphasis on free markets, economic liberty of individuals, and the dangers of government intervention make Economics in One Lesson every bit as relevant and valuable today as it has been since publication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Lost Lady is a novel by American author Willa Cather, first published in 1923. It centers on Marian Forrester, her husband Captain Daniel Forrester, and their lives in the small western town of Sweet Water, along the Transcontinental Railroad. However, it is mostly told from the perspective of a young man named Niel Herbert, as he observes the decline of both Marian and the West itself, as it shifts from a place of pioneering spirit to one of corporate exploitation. Exploring themes of social class, money, and the march of progress, A Lost Lady was praised for its vivid use of symbolism and setting, and is considered to be a major influence on the works of F. Scott Fitzgerald. It has been adapted to film twice, with a film adaptation being released in 1924, followed by a looser adaptation in 1934, starring Barbara Stanwyck. A Lost Lady begins in the small railroad town of Sweet Water, on the undeveloped Western plains. The most prominent family in the town is the Forresters, and Marian Forrester is known for her hospitality and kindness. The railroad executives frequently stop by her house and enjoy the food and comfort she offers while there on business. A young boy, Niel Herbert, frequently plays on the Forrester estate with his friend. One day, an older boy named Ivy Peters arrives, and shoots a woodpecker out of a tree. He then blinds the bird and laughs as it flies around helplessly. Niel pities the bird and tries to climb the tree to put it out of its misery, but while climbing he slips, and breaks his arm in the fall, as well as knocking himself unconscious. Ivy takes him to the Forrester house where Marian looks after him. When Niel wakes up, he's amazed by the nice house and how sweet Marian smells. He doesn't't see her much after that, but several years later he and his uncle, Judge Pommeroy, are invited to the Forrester house for dinner. There he meets Ellinger, who he will later learn is Mrs. Forrester's lover, and Constance, a young girl his age.

Book The Mirage of Social Justice

Download or read book The Mirage of Social Justice written by Friedrich August Hayek and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1976-01-01 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a three-part study of the relations between law and liberty. Volume 1 deals with the basic conceptions necessary for a critical analysis of prevailing theories of justice and of the conditions which a constitution securing personal liberty would have to satisfy. In volume 2, the author examines the theories of utilitariansim and legal positivism and considers the concept of 'social justice.' He shows this ideal to be devoid of meaning and therefore a most harmful and dangerous cause of the mis-direction of well-meant efforts: he demonstrates that it is a remnant of the tribal ethics of a closed society and whooly incompatible with the individual freedom whih the Open Society promises. In the final volume, Hayek analyses and discards modern sociobiological theories of morality and social conduct, demonstrating that man's behaviour pattern has been determined more by custom than by the exercise of reason, and that mind and culture therefore developed concurrently and not successively. He shows how the democratic ideal is in danger of miscarrying due to the erroneous assumptions that there can be moral standards without moral discipline, that the element of tradition can be ignored in proposals for restructuring society, and the way in which the disctinct ideals of egalitarianism and democracy are increasingly confused.
