Book Shrines and Miraculous Images

Download or read book Shrines and Miraculous Images written by William B. Taylor and published by University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 2019-02-15 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vast literature on Our Lady of Guadalupe dominates the study of shrines and religious practices in Mexico. But there is much more to the story of shrines and images in Mexico’s religious history than Guadalupe and Marian devotion. In this book a distinguished historian brings together his new and recent essays on previously unstudied or reconsidered places, themes, patterns, and episodes in Mexican religious history during the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries. William Taylor explores the use of local and regional shrines as well as devotion to images of Christ and Mary, including Our Lady of Guadalupe, to get to the heart of the politics and practices of faith in Mexico before the Reforma. Each of these essays touches on methodological and conceptual matters that open out to processes and paradoxes of change and continuity, exposing the symbolic complexity behind the material representations.

Download or read book What Did Jesus Look Like written by Joan E. Taylor and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus Christ is arguably the most famous man who ever lived. His image adorns countless churches, icons, and paintings. He is the subject of millions of statues, sculptures, devotional objects and works of art. Everyone can conjure an image of Jesus: usually as a handsome, white man with flowing locks and pristine linen robes. But what did Jesus really look like? Is our popular image of Jesus overly westernized and untrue to historical reality? This question continues to fascinate. Leading Christian Origins scholar Joan E. Taylor surveys the historical evidence, and the prevalent image of Jesus in art and culture, to suggest an entirely different vision of this most famous of men. He may even have had short hair.

Book The Image of Christ

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gabriele Finaldi
  • Publisher : National Gallery Publications
  • Release : 2000
  • ISBN : 9781857092929
  • Pages : 224 pages

Download or read book The Image of Christ written by Gabriele Finaldi and published by National Gallery Publications. This book was released on 2000 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Image of Christ expresses the view that modern secular audiences can engage with the masterpieces of Christian art at an emotional as well as a purely aesthetic or historical level. This book aims to help the viewer understand these pictures by focusing attention on the purpose for which they were made, and explores what they might have meant to their original viewers. The authors trace how a recognizable image of Christ evolved, starting with the earliest symbols and metaphorical images such as the Sheperd, the Lamb and the Vine. They trace the emergence of a "true likeness," emphasizing the importance of the Veronica, the "miraculous portrait" said to have been imprinted on the cloth held out to Jesus on the way to Calvary. They describe how artists conveyed the paradox of Christ's dual nature—human and divine, weak and powerful, victim and victor—in portrayals of his infancy. They also show how images of Christ's suffering during the Passion were intended to convey a cosmic, not just a personal significance. Artists have attempted to put extremes of suffering and despair into an overal context of hope–a vein of hope that runs from the catacombs to Hiroshima and beyond. These are images that speak, even to those who do not hold Christian beliefs. Artists had to make it clear that in representing the life and death of Jesus they were offering a continuing truth; we the spectators have to become eyewitnesses to an event that matters to us now. As a result, the different moments and aspects of Christ's life become, in the hands of great artists, a reflection of all human experience. The Virgin nursing her son expresses the feelings of love every mother has for her child. Christ mocked in innocence beset by violence. Christ risen and appearing to Mary Magdalene is a universal reaffirmation that love cannot be destroyed by death. Beyond their obvious religious significance, these are paintings that have a universal meaning.

  • Pages : 417 pages

Download or read book Medjugorje written by Wayne Weible and published by Paraclete Press. This book was released on 1989-07-01 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With refreshing candor and self-deprecating humor, Wayne takes the reader with him on the adventure to Medjugorje that radically and permanently changed his life. You will discover the apparitions of the Blessed Mother along with him, as he chronicles the ways that the Virgin Mary continues to speak to the world today from Medjugorje. "In a tiny village in the mountains of Yugoslavia, the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus Christ, had reportedly been appearing to a group of local teenagers, beginning in June, 1981, and continuing every evening since." So begins journalist Wayne Weible's life-transforming investigation into the veracity of one of the most popular Marian apparition claims in history. What began as a quick attempt to add some spice to his regular newspaper column resulted in a life-long exploration of the apparitions of the Blessed Mother that are still happening at Medjugorje, and the lives that are changed as a result. Do miracles happen? Wayne Weible is one former skeptic who is now convinced that they do. Paraclete Press presents a special, hardcover, illustrated edition of Medjugorje: The Message---the best-selling English-language book on the subject--- on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Mary's first message to six youths in the mountains. This new edition includes a new preface by the author and a special, eight-page photo insert.
