Book excerpt: It makes no difference whether global warming is or is not a “human-caused” condition, because it is only human-caused action that will mediate its effects. This book shows why wind and solar alone are not enough. To get a handle on this, we need a backup plan, that is, an energy miracle. This is the book that gives concerned folks an understanding of exactly how to tackle global warming. At the same time, it gives students and scientists the tools to jump-start the search for energy miracles. The politicians and administrators who need a low-cost solution that comes to grips with the coming debacle will be happy to know that this book provides that as well. In this century, over one billion people living in low-lying coastal areas will be inundated by rising seas. It’s time to get moving. Read this book and then pass it on to a friend or an associate.

Book Reading by Design

Download or read book Reading by Design written by Pauline Reid and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2019-04-08 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renaissance readers perceived the print book as both a thing and a medium - a thing that could be broken or reassembled, and a visual medium that had the power to reflect, transform, or deceive. At the same historical moment that print books remediated the visual and material structures of manuscript and oral rhetoric, the relationship between vision and perception was fundamentally called into question. Investigating this crisis of perception, Pauline Reid argues that the visual crisis that suffuses early modern English thought also imbricates sixteenth- and seventeenth-century print materials. These vision troubles in turn influenced how early modern books and readers interacted. Platonic, Aristotelian, and empirical models of sight vied with one another in a culture where vision had a tenuous relationship to external reality. Through situating early modern books’ design elements, such as woodcuts, engravings, page borders, and layouts, as important rhetorical components of the text, Reading by Design articulates how the early modern book responded to epistemological crises of perception and competing theories of sight.

Book excerpt: Colorado Book Awards Finalist for Poetry Shortlisted for the Reading the West Poetry Book Award The poems that make up Anodyne consider the small moments that enrapture us alongside the daily threats of cataclysm. Formally dynamic and searingly personal, Anodyne asks us to recognize the echoes of history that litter the landscape of our bodies as we navigate a complex terrain of survival and longing. With an intimate and multivocal dexterity, these poems acknowledge the simultaneous existence of joy and devastation, knowledge and ignorance, grief and love, endurance and failure—all of the contrast and serendipity that comes with the experience of being human. If the body is a world, or a metaphor for the world, for what disappears and what remains, for what we feel and what we cover up, then how do we balance fate and choice, pleasure and pain? Through a combination of formal lyrics, delicate experiments, sharp rants, musical litany, and moments of wit that uplift and unsettle, Queen’s poems show us the terrible consequences and stunning miracles of how we choose to live.

Book excerpt: Christianity Today 2013 Book Award Winner Winner of The Foundation for Pentecostal Scholarship's 2012 Award of Excellence 2011 Book of the Year, Christianbook.com's Academic Blog Most modern prejudice against biblical miracle reports depends on David Hume's argument that uniform human experience precluded miracles. Yet current research shows that human experience is far from uniform. In fact, hundreds of millions of people today claim to have experienced miracles. New Testament scholar Craig Keener argues that it is time to rethink Hume's argument in light of the contemporary evidence available to us. This wide-ranging and meticulously researched two-volume study presents the most thorough current defense of the credibility of the miracle reports in the Gospels and Acts. Drawing on claims from a range of global cultures and taking a multidisciplinary approach to the topic, Keener suggests that many miracle accounts throughout history and from contemporary times are best explained as genuine divine acts, lending credence to the biblical miracle reports.

Book In Search of the Miraculous

Download or read book In Search of the Miraculous written by Milton Glaser and published by ABRAMS. This book was released on 2012-03-14 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The iconic graphic designer presents “a self-analysis of his creative process . . . [in] arguably his proudest accomplishment” (The Atlantic). Milton Glaser is perhaps the most celebrated graphic designer in the world. As a young man, he read a phrase that stayed with him through his life: “In Search of the Miraculous.” One could say that all human experience is a miracle—memory, color, taste, Vermeer, stars, watermelon, etc. For those like Glaser, the act of making things that move the mind is perhaps the deepest aspiration to the miraculous. In this volume, he has chosen work, largely created by him over the last five years, to demonstrate how one concept leads to another. Through fascinating juxtapositions, readers will gain insights into Glaser’s oeuvre, journeying with him as he discovers that seemingly new designs frequently come out of provocative ideas taken from the distant past. “Elegant . . . The text and the picture positively embrace and dance together.” —The New York Times “To younger graphic designers, Glaser has the stature of Marlon Brando in Hollywood . . . He appears to have thought more deeply about what he makes than many lionized by the contemporary art world and its market.” —San Francisco Chronicle “In Search of the Miraculous aptly captures the tension involved in reconciling the artist’s aspirations to do great work and the client’s objectives. This book eloquently, articulately, and with great panache, and provocation, illuminates the extraordinary outcomes that emerge when the artistic process miraculously works.” —New York Journal of Books
