Book Miracles and Christianity Classic Reprint

Download or read book Miracles and Christianity Classic Reprint written by Johannes Wendland and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Miracles and Christianity Of late it has been far from easy to name an English book on miracles which is at once modern, relevant, and positive. The influential works of Mozley and Bruce, although in no way obsolete, were published in 1805 and 1880 respectively; and the student of to-day will naturally ask a treatment of the subject which contemplates the more recent discussions in theology and philosophy. One merit of Professor Wendland's book, issued in German only a year since, is its steady hold, as it appears to me, of sane and lucid principle. His plan and point of view have enabled him to bring out leading ideas, unencumbered by details; and amongst these ideas are some which his critics of different schools agree in thinking peculiarly helpful for to-day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel Miracles: In Their Relation to Christ and Christianity Acts ii.22: Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders; signs, which God did by him, in the midst of you. In entering on the subject which is to occupy our attention throughout these lectures, it is needful that we should have a clear idea of the place which an inquiry into the credibility and evidential value of miracles has in the investigation of the nature and origin of Christianity. These are not the first topics that challenge consideration in the examination of the Scriptures; nor are they dependent for their right adjustment on our acceptance of the doctrine that the Evangelists and Apostles were divinely inspired. It is often alleged, however, that the defenders of the faith are guilty of disingenuousness, inasmuch as, at one time, they use the inspiration and authority of Scripture for the purpose of proving the reality of the miracles; while at another, they employ the reality of the miracles for the purpose of establishing the inspired authority of the Scriptures. Book Miracles in the New Testament Classic Reprint

Download or read book Miracles in the New Testament Classic Reprint written by J. M. Thompson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-30 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Miracles in the New Testament The main part of this book consists of a critical examina tion of the miracle-stories of the New Testament, leading to the hypothesis that the original events underlying those traditions need not be regarded as miraculous. This is prefaced by an attempt to define the belief in miracles, and followed by an estimate of some of the theological results of its rejection. It must not be thought that, because the constructive part of the book (pp. 211-218) is so short, it is nu important. It was inevitable, from the nature of the case, that the detailed criticism of the miracle-stories should form the bulk of the argument. But criticism is throughout regarded as subordinate to construction. There would be little point in discussing the problem of miracles except as a step towards a formulation of Christian theology. The last few pages of the conclusion are meant to focus the whole argument upon what really matters - our belief about God and Christ. They should, perhaps, be read first, as well as last, if the book is to be fairly judged as a whole. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Question of Miracles Such, speaking historically, is the relation of the Christian faith to miracles. At the present day, however, the claim is made to hold a non-miracu lous Christianity -to profess Christianity and at the same time to dispense with all belief in the miraculous. This attitude may be said to be one of the leading characteristics of liberal Protestant ism. Among German Protestant theologians it is almost universal. Those who, like Zahn and See berg, still hold the historic reality of the New Testament miracles are few indeed - mrz' names in gurgz'te waste. If you are in earnest, you must know and feel too, as I do, that the important point is whether' must and ought can go together here. If you, still claiming to be a Christian, hold that your faith may, as well as must, be tested by the methods in question, you hold that it will stand the test: if, on the other hand, you only mean that the process is inevitable, you mean that we have-no eventual prospect before us but Atheism. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Miracles: Helps to Faith, Not Hindrances Think that there is danger to the interests of truth and godliness in such a low estimate of the value of the supernatural. For if we View the mission of Christ as a whole, what is it but one stupendous miracle? What is the incarnation if it be not a miracle? What is the great redemptive scheme but an interference or intervention of Divine agency to produce an effect otherwise impossible? And is not that the very essence of miracle? If, therefore, we let go or fail to appreciate those miracles, which, lying in the sphere of human observation, were given as the external signs of the reality of that great spiritual miracle which cannot be so directly tested, who does not see that by and by we shall be in danger of letting go this last also? If we reject miracle in the material department, are we not on the high way that leads to the rejection of it in the spiritual, and so to the reduction of the gospel to a mere system of naturalism, one among the rest of the religions of the world, - better than most indeed, but still only Of men? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Miracles in Modern Life But if Official Science has turned the blind eye on Spiritualism what is to be said as regards the attitude maintained by the Christian Church for this is a subject that primarily concerns the Church? That scientific evidence can be produced to prove that there is a future life and a future world, and that a measure Of communication can be maintained between the two worlds is a fact that ought to be Of interest to every Christian man and woman. It is upon these central facts that the Christian faith has been built. The Resurrection Of Jesus Christ is regarded as the key-stone in the arch Of the Christian faith. Spiritualism alone can explain the Resurrection Of Jesus which otherwise would remain an isolated fact in human experience. On this all-important matter F. W. H. Myers truly wrote - I venture now upon a bold saying: for I predict that in consequence Of the new evidence, all reasonable men a century hence will believe in the Resurrection of Christ, whereas, in default Of the new evidence no reasonable man, a century hence, would have believed it.
