Book There Will Be No Miracles Here

Download or read book There Will Be No Miracles Here written by Casey Gerald and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2018-10-02 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NAMED A BEST BOOK OF 2018 BY NPR AND THE NEW YORK TIMES A PBS NEWSHOUR-NEW YORK TIMES BOOK CLUB PICK "Somehow Casey Gerald has pulled off the most urgently political, most deeply personal, and most engagingly spiritual statement of our time by just looking outside his window and inside himself. Extraordinary." —Marlon James "Staccato prose and peripatetic storytelling combine the cadences of the Bible with an urgency reminiscent of James Baldwin in this powerfully emotional memoir." —BookPage The testament of a boy and a generation who came of age as the world came apart—a generation searching for a new way to live. Casey Gerald comes to our fractured times as a uniquely visionary witness whose life has spanned seemingly unbridgeable divides. His story begins at the end of the world: Dallas, New Year's Eve 1999, when he gathers with the congregation of his grandfather's black evangelical church to see which of them will be carried off. His beautiful, fragile mother disappears frequently and mysteriously; for a brief idyll, he and his sister live like Boxcar Children on her disability checks. When Casey--following in the footsteps of his father, a gridiron legend who literally broke his back for the team--is recruited to play football at Yale, he enters a world he's never dreamed of, the anteroom to secret societies and success on Wall Street, in Washington, and beyond. But even as he attains the inner sanctums of power, Casey sees how the world crushes those who live at its margins. He sees how the elite perpetuate the salvation stories that keep others from rising. And he sees, most painfully, how his own ascension is part of the scheme. There Will Be No Miracles Here has the arc of a classic rags-to-riches tale, but it stands the American Dream narrative on its head. If to live as we are is destroying us, it asks, what would it mean to truly live? Intense, incantatory, shot through with sly humor and quiet fury, There Will Be No Miracles Hereinspires us to question--even shatter--and reimagine our most cherished myths.

Download or read book The Miracle Tree written by Paul John Hausleben and published by God Bless the Keg Publishing LLC. This book was released on 2023-04-22 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Miracle Tree is the fifth book in the series of The Adventures of Harry and Paul. The novel contains deep religious tones with insight and influences of the Lutheran Church in America. It is a humorous, yet poignant and heartwarming novel, based upon the continuing adventures of the author's two famous characters, Harry M. Redmond Junior and his longtime friend, Lutheran Pastor Paul John Henson. Now grown into manhood, The Miracle Tree finds our two friends; deeply involved in their own individual lives, careers, and relationships, but still retaining that special friendship and bond, in which they have enjoyed for many years. In The Miracle Tree, Harry and Paul face their greatest challenge ever. It is a challenge, which shakes the very foundation of their lives, faith, and their own relationship. Already a victim of tragedy when his first wife passed away after a horrific and valiant battle with cancer, when tragedy looms once again, Harry turns to his best friend, now a Lutheran pastor for help. Harry turns to the one person that he believes in more than anyone this side of Heaven in order to perform a miracle. A miracle of faith, a miracle of belief, and a miracle that right now seems impossible. Full of self-doubts, yet committed, and determined, Pastor Paul combines his love for his friend and their families with raw emotion, his deep religious faith, and intense prayer to find the answer and the miracle that they all require. Amongst the triumph and tragedy and the ultimate joy of this remarkable story, the author retains the trademark humor that is consistent with all the Adventures of Harry and Paul, with one of his famous humorous chapters, “The Quest for Peppermint Ice Cream” ranking as one of the author’s top humorous writing moments. To quote the author’s preface for The Miracle Tree, “Those readers who are very religious in their beliefs will interpret The Miracle Tree to be a religious fantasy book. Those readers, who are not religious, will see it in their own way, as a book about simple faith, strange coincidences, trust, and support between close friends, husband and wife, and families. They will see it as a book that displays how people who love and support one another will always survive, no matter what happens. I will leave it to the individual readers to enjoy in their own manner.” Come along on another wonderful Harry and Paul adventure, as told by the master storyteller, Mr. Paul John Hausleben.

Book Miracle on High Street

  • Author : Thomas A. McCabe

Download or read book Miracle on High Street written by Thomas A. McCabe and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just outside downtown Newark, New Jersey, sits an abbey and school. For more than 150 years Benedictine monks have lived, worked, and prayed on High Street, a once-grand thoroughfare that became Newark’s Skid Row and a focal point of the 1967 riots. St. Benedict’s today has become a model of a successful inner-city school, with 95 percent of its graduates—mainly African American and Latino boys—going on to college. Miracle on High Street is the story of how the monks of St. Benedict’s transformed their venerable yet outdated school to become a thriving part of the community that helped save a faltering city. In the 1960s, after a trinity of woes—massive deindustrialization, high-speed suburbanization, and racial violence—caused an exodus from Newark, St. Benedict’s struggled to remain open. Enrollment in general dwindled, and fewer students enrolled from the surrounding community. The monks watched the violence of the 1967 riots from the school’s rooftop along High Street. In the riot’s aftermath more families fled what some called “the worst city in America.” The school closed in 1972, in what seemed to be just another funeral for an urban Catholic school. A few monks, inspired by the Benedictine virtues of stability and adaptability, reopened St. Benedict’s only one year later with a bare-bones staff . Their new mission was to bring to young African American and Latino males the same opportunities that German and Irish immigrants had had 150 years before. More than thirty years later, St. Benedict’s is one of the most unusual schools in the country. Its remarkable success shows that American education can bridge the achievement gap between white and black, as well as that between rich and poor. The story of St. Benedict’s is about an institution’s rise and fall, resurrection and renaissance. It also provides valuable insights into American religious, immigration, educational, and metropolitan history. By staying true to their historical values amid a continually changing city, the downtown monks, in resurrecting its prep school, helped save an American city. Some have even called it the miracle on High Street.

Book Book 11 Miracle Working HC

Download or read book Book 11 Miracle Working HC written by Kurt Jurgensmeier and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-08-22 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is God still doing miracles today? Because of the many claims of charismaticism, a rather detailed biblical study of the matter is warranted. We defend the following conclusions: - Modern "miracle workers" cannot demonstrate the attributes of biblical ones, and are lying when they claim similar gifts. - There are no God-sent miracle workers in Scripture that were not also sources of new, direct, divine revelation to be believed and obeyed as the word of God. - The faith to perform or receive a miracle is just as supernatural and God-given as the miracle itself, and modern "faith healers" are wrong to blame disappointed followers for their lack of such faith. - The Church has universally testified that the gifts of miracle working ceased in the early Church with the completion of the NT. - The fraud in the modern miracle movement has been immense. -Other legitimate explanations for modern "miracles" are intriguing and even alarming.

This improbable story, set against the wisdom of scripture, turns on a series of events far beyond human understanding or control. Journey on the Hard Side of Miracles is a record of the supernatural. A surprising story of roaming buses, quiet street ministry, and think again miracles recorded just the way they happened. Here are the beauty, the wisdom, and the struggle of following the Good Shepherd. Here are trouble, hope, brokenness and danger. This unusual yet true story offers ample reason to ponder God's intervention in our lives. The surprising turns in the road may be nothing that you expect, but seen through the eyes of faith these stories offer wisdom and encouragement. Every mountain climbed, every desert crossed, every dark valley and peaceful place of rest revealed an unseen Traveler and the One to whom the journey belonged. There is a reason to listen to the Shepherd. There is a reason to stay close.
