Book excerpt: It was a time of hippies, heroin, and All in the Family. It was a time, in the small town of New Canaan—a fictional town in mid-Michigan—when developers gobbled up farmland and spit out subdivisions. Against this backdrop, Swarm Theory’s interlocking narratives reveal the troubled lives of Astrid (a young woman trying to hold her family together), Caroline (Astrid’s best friend who has lost her mother to heroin), Will (a soldier struggling to make sense of life after being discharged from the Marines), and Father Maurice Silver (a priest caring for a young man dying of AIDS). Nothing in New Canaan is quite what it seems. Swarm Theory is a book that reveals life’s amazing contradictions—the wonderful and the profane, devotion and infidelity, understanding and revenge—through stories told from different perspectives. These stories investigate what happens when people come together—whether to do admirable or horrific things. Here, intimates and strangers alike can’t help but be intertwined; their unpredictable journeys providing a backdrop for characters complex, honorable, and not. Swarm Theory reveals our often misguided, dark, and life-sustaining dependency on each other.

Book excerpt: Billionaire, visionary, architect and engineer, Dr. Marko Marmilic, has changed the world in unimaginable ways. From his cutting-edge inventions in bio-genetics and cellular rejuvenation, to mechanical design and space-age metallurgy, he's been labeled "the Nikola Tesla of the modern age." But his newest technological breakthrough is, by far, his most ambitious, and most controversial. Marmilic has been commissioned to develop a machine that will change the entire geopolitical landscape in a way no one could possibly envision. He has developed a land vehicle that can travel at Hypersonic speeds - an alien-looking super cycle called the Sonic One, that can reach Mach 15 by harnessing the Earth's magnetic fields. Invisible to radar, exponentially faster than any fighter jet, drone, or missile - and it can do this – without making a sound. Equally impressive is the rider's revolutionary suit of bio-synthetic armor that can protect a human body from incineration at those speeds. In his eyes, a fleet of Sonic vehicles could transport food, medical supplies and life-saving equipment to the neediest countries in a matter of minutes, saving hundreds of millions of lives the world over. But to those financing this TOP SECRET scientific miracle, there is a more insidious objective, and to them there is only one person who will operate the machine - Chris Kordell, a full-torso quadriplegic who has just awoken from a two-year coma. He has no idea where he is, what happened to him, or why he's surrounded by strange scientists. Worst still, he has no clue that he's been chosen to transform Marmilic's vision of altruistic life into one of the most deadly instruments of war ever imagined.

Book PIPER S Inc 3 DEAD TO RIGHTS

Download or read book PIPER S Inc 3 DEAD TO RIGHTS written by JOAQUIN DE TORRES and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2018-07-11 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seven years ago, a secret society of exceptionally-trained assassins swept over the nation's criminal landscape like a tsunami on a tiny village. Trained in exotic forms of hand to hand combat, military weaponry, and bleeding edge cyber technology - they hunted down and purged the most corrupt politicians, CEOs, lawyers, judges, priests, televangelists, social icons, police chiefs, and oligarchs with horrific and savage efficiency. No mercy was shown to those who destroyed the everyday citizen; no quarter was given to those who oppressed the innocent. Performing this purge was PIPER'S, Inc., and spearheading the elite corps of PIPER'S, Inc. combatants was Draven Moon, callsign Temujin, a former special forces commander. A one-man army, he led the resistance; he led the assassinations; he led the raids. He was the facilitator of the new emancipation of America. But that was seven years ago. . . Today, Moon is serving multiple life sentences in Attica's super-max prison; the organization's original directors are either dead or retired; and the once invincible combatants of PIPER'S, Inc. are leaderless, unemployed, and scattered. President Ericka Hedlin, a staunch supporter of PIPER'S, Inc., watches helplessly as the nation diverges again towards government and corporate corruption, racism, and police brutality. Without Moon, PIPER'S, Inc. is dormant; without PIPER'S, Inc., America is doomed. But Moon has a plan – an inconceivable and implausible plan. From within his cell, he promises to hunt down every conspiring facilitator and influencer in every government building, every courthouse, every police precinct, every law firm, every corporation, every political district, every racist rally, and in every oligarch's mansion – EVERYONE who has damaged and threatened America in his absence – will be burned alive in the flames of a New Revolution!

Book Calcium Signaling Protocols

Download or read book Calcium Signaling Protocols written by David G. Lambert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-02-04 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first edition of Calcium Signaling Protocols I began by writing “The regula- 2+ tion of intracellular Ca is a common theme presented in many papers over the last 20 2+ or so years and the description of the Ca -sensitive indicator dye fura-2 in 1985 resulted in a massive increase in these types of studies. ” This statement is as true in 2005 as it was in 1999, but 20 or so years is now 30 years! There has been some reorganization of the volume such that there are now 22 ch- ters including five new ones, all written by experts in their field. These new chapters 2+ include use of the FlexStation and electrophysiological measurement of Ca channel activity. The book is broken into six parts. Part I is a general coverage of basic theory and the simplest use of fluorescent indicators. Part II covers specialist measurement 2+ systems and Part III covers measurement of Ca channel activity. Assessment of 2+ release of stored Ca is covered in some detail in Part IV, with Parts V and VI cover- 2+ ing specialist measurement techniques and Ca -sensitive targets. Putting a book like this together, even as a second edition, takes time and I am, again, indebted to the individual authors for their help and patience. I am also very grateful to Professor John M. Walker, the series editor, for his continued help and advice over the course of this project.
