Book excerpt: Excerpt from Minutes of the Fifty-Ninth Session of the Synod of North Carolina: Held at Charlotte, October 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th, 1872 The Synod met according to adjournment and spent the first half-hour in devotional exercises. The following Ministers appeared in Synod and were enrolled, and their excuses for tarniness sustained, viz: Rev. Messrs. Hines, Hughes, Penick and Jordan, from the Presbytery of Orange: Rev. G. M. Gibbs, from the Presbytery of Concord: Rev. Messrs. H. G. Hill and A. N. Ferguson, from the Presbytery of Fayetteville, and Rev. J. J. Kennedy, from the Presbytery of Mecklenburg. The following Ruling-Elders appeared, and after rendering satisfactory reasons for tardiness, took their seats, viz: From the Presbytery of Orange: Messrs. Wm. B. Carter, A. Hargrave and W. F. Thom. From the Presbytery of Concord: E. W. Kimmons. From the Presbytery of Faytteville: Jas. D.; McIver. From the Presbytery Wilmington: W. N. Whitted. From the Presbytery of Mecklenburg: Messrs. S. M. Banks, W. R. Holland and R. I. McDowell. Rev. T.E. Peck, D. D. and Rev. Messrs. Alexander Martin. S; Taylor Martin and E. D. Jenkin, of the Synod of Virginia, and Rev. T. L. De Veaux, of the Synod of Georgia, being present, were invited to sit as corresponding members. On motion, the reading of the Minutes of the last meeting of Synod was dispensed with. Rev.S. H. Isler, of the Presbytery of Wilmington, appeared in Synod, and after giving satisfactory reasons for tardiness, took his seat. Rev. Messrs. D. E. Jordan, Jesse Rankin, Joseph Evans William McDonald and J. J. Kennedy rendered satisfactory reasons for absence from the last meeting of Synod.
