Book State of the World s Minorities and Indigenous Peoples 2016

Download or read book State of the World s Minorities and Indigenous Peoples 2016 written by Peter Grant and published by Minority Rights Group. This book was released on 2016-07-12 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unique cultures of minorities and indigenous peoples worldwide – spanning a wide variety of customs and practices – are under threat. This year’s edition of State of the World’s Minorities and Indigenous Peoples highlights the impact of land dispossession, forced assimilation and other forms of discrimination on the most fundamental aspects of their identity, including language, art, traditional knowledge and spirituality. But while the effects of this attrition can be devastating, minority and indigenous cultures have also been critical in strengthening communities and providing activists with a platform to fight for their rights. As this volume illustrates, ensuring that the cultural freedoms of minorities and indigenous peoples are protected is essential if their other rights are also to be respected.

Book Minority Rights The Key to Conflict Prevention

Download or read book Minority Rights The Key to Conflict Prevention written by Clive Baldwin and published by Minority Rights Group. This book was released on 2007-05-12 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report, Minority Rights: The Key to Conflict Prevention, cogently argues that an understanding of minority rights is essential for anyone dealing with conflict prevention and resolution. The report’s authors, Clive Baldwin, Chris Chapman and Zoë Gray, demonstrate the strong links between minority rights violations and the outbreak of major conflicts, drawing on research carried out in China, India, Iraq, Kosovo, Nicaragua, the Philippines and Sudan, among other states. MRG’s report shows how minority rights violations are often warning signs of an approaching conflict. This new report looks at five themes: minority identity, the ability of minorities to participate in political and economic life, land/property rights and justice issues. Using case studies and providing practical advice, the authors show why ignoring early warning signs in any of these areas could lead to a build up of tensions and ultimately, violent conflict. The international community’s record on minority rights and conflict prevention is examined and found wanting. The report concludes with a checklist and a series of recommendations aimed at international bodies working on conflict prevention and resolution.

This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a context of rapid growth, an increasing proportion of minorities and indigenous peoples are now living in urban areas. But while they offer the possibility of greater freedoms, improved livelihoods and more equitable opportunities, cities often magnify existing patterns of discrimination and insecurity. This year's edition of State of the world's minorities and indigenous peoples explores the many challenges communities face in urban areas, from segregation and lack of services to targeted violence and exclusion. Nevertheless, the volume also includes numerous cases of minorities and indigenous peoples achieving better social and political outcomes for themselves in cities, as well as examples of the substantial benefits their inclusion can bring to the entire urban population.

Download or read book The Palestinians written by David McDowall and published by Minority Rights Group. This book was released on 1998-07-01 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1918 Christian and Muslim Arabs formed over 90 per cent of the population of Palestine. Fifty years later, those left were a powerless minority in their own land, while most were refugees outside Palestine. Since 1967, Israel has been an occupying force in Gaza and the West Bank, expropriating for example over 60 per cent of the West Bank’s land area, dispossessing many Palestinians. While Israel’s actions have been condemned in United Nations Security Council and General Assembly resolutions, Israel continues its actions largely unchecked. Within Israel, Palestinians are systematically discriminated against in almost all areas of society. While condemning the Israeli government's policies, the Report also discusses the abuses of the newly-established Palestinian Authority. The Palestinians provides information on the outlook for Palestinian society and examines why the peace process – once seen to offer a constructive way forward – is now in tatters. The Report offers a concise and accessible analysis of the background to this situation and cogently argues that the international community must act as a matter of urgency to enable a just settlement to be found – one that promotes and protects Palestinians’ rights and enables Israel and the Palestinian Authority to work towards peaceful coexistence – based on respect for international law. Please note that the terminology in the fields of minority rights and indigenous peoples’ rights has changed over time. MRG strives to reflect these changes as well as respect the right to self-identification on the part of minorities and indigenous peoples. At the same time, after over 50 years’ work, we know that our archive is of considerable interest to activists and researchers. Therefore, we make available as much of our back catalogue as possible, while being aware that the language used may not reflect current thinking on these issues.

Download or read book Gender Minorities and Indigenous Peoples written by Fareda Banda and published by Minority Rights Group. This book was released on 2004-08-05 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While it is generally acknowledged that women suffer discrimination, women who are also members of minority or indigenous communities are particularly marginalized. Like male members of minority and indigenous communities, they lack access to political power and face discrimination in their access to services and rights. However, as women they face these problems and more. The aim of this report is to encourage those working on minority and indigenous peoples’ rights to consider the issues from a gender perspective, and to encourage those working on gender equality and women’s rights to include minorities and indigenous peoples within their remit. The report is written by Fareda Banda and Christine Chinkin, who are both international human rights lawyers and gender specialists. It has an international law and advocacy focus. First, the basic concepts an relevant international human rights instruments are set out. Then, using case studies and examples from around the world. the authors show how gender intersects with other forms of discrimination on the lives of some minority and indigenous peoples. Key issues for minority and indigenous peoples are stressed, and there is a nuanced discussion of the issue of culture, which can be both a positive and negative force in relation to women’s human rights. The report concludes with a set of recommendations. This report will be essential reading for anyone interested in issues of gender and the human rights of minorities and indigenous peoples.

Aimed at minority and indigenous activists and those working with them, each chapter has been written by an expert on a particular right, who provides practical information and advice about the best ways to advocate for securing ESC rights. The chapters cover the rights to food and water, housing, health, education, labour and culture and describe the legal standards, enforcement mechanisms, and guidelines for successful civil society advocacy.

Book Inequality and the impact of Covid 19 How discrimination is shaping the experiences of minorities and indigenous peoples during the pandemic

Download or read book Inequality and the impact of Covid 19 How discrimination is shaping the experiences of minorities and indigenous peoples during the pandemic written by Rasha Al Saba and published by Minority Rights Group. This book was released on 2020-09-10 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Covid-19 outbreak was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) on 11 March 2020. It had initially spread in Wuhan, China in late 2019, before the first cases outside the country were recorded at the beginning of 2020. Today there are millions of cases of Covid-19 globally, with thousands of new cases being confirmed every day. The Covid-19 pandemic is, at root, a public health emergency, driven by its ready transmission and ability to cause severe illness and death. But while its ability to overwhelm the best of health systems has already been demonstrated, its far-reaching social, economic and political consequences are still unfolding. Although everyone is at risk of the virus, some groups have been worse affected by the pandemic and its consequences, including in particular minorities and indigenous peoples. Especially in the global north, mounting evidence has shown that ethnic, racial and religious minorities are not only at greater risk of contracting the virus for a wide range of reasons – from their disproportionate employment in high-risk sectors such as nursing, cleaning and public transport to their concentration in overcrowded housing where social distancing is more difficult – but can also face higher rates of mortality once infected, often due to limited access to medical care. Linguistic minorities may face problems in accessing accurate public health advice. While there is so far less data available on the impact of the pandemic on indigenous peoples, particularly smaller or more isolated communities, emerging evidence from the US and elsewhere suggests that the implications of the pandemic have been ‘disproportionately devastating’ for indigenous peoples.
