They serve in leadership roles, are researchers, and work to improve health care policy. As the health care system undergoes transformation due in part to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), the nursing profession is making a wide-reaching impact by providing and affecting quality, patient-centered, accessible, and affordable care. In 2010, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) released the report The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, which made a series of recommendations pertaining to roles for nurses in the new health care landscape. This current report assesses progress made by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation/AARP Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action and others in implementing the recommendations from the 2010 report and identifies areas that should be emphasized over the next 5 years to make further progress toward these goals.

Minority Nurses in the New Century presents both a unique national survey of ethnic and racial minority nurses and a pilot project that grew out of that initial study. The findings of this survey reveal in detail the characteristics of these nurses, the reality of their work, and their perceptions of it. In addition to a discussion of the survey and its findings, the survey's data is conveyed in a series of figures, depicting comprehensively the personal and professional characteristics of these nurses. Some data on their patients, a comparison of the work of minority and majority nurses, and overall recommendations are also included. The pilot project, a year-long series of workshops, allowed a group of nurse leaders from historically black colleges and universities to explore their concerns about collaborative partnerships with majority nursing schools. Findings from the project are presented, along with a detailed practical model, that together should help minority nurses to develop the skills and strategies needed to assume leadership roles. Minority Nurses in the New Century will help nursing and health care leaders, educators, and researchers to facilitate minority nurses in professional and leadership roles and thus influence health care in a manner appropriate for the 21st century.

Book excerpt: As the population of older Americans grows, it is becoming more racially and ethnically diverse. Differences in health by racial and ethnic status could be increasingly consequential for health policy and programs. Such differences are not simply a matter of education or ability to pay for health care. For instance, Asian Americans and Hispanics appear to be in better health, on a number of indicators, than White Americans, despite, on average, lower socioeconomic status. The reasons are complex, including possible roles for such factors as selective migration, risk behaviors, exposure to various stressors, patient attitudes, and geographic variation in health care. This volume, produced by a multidisciplinary panel, considers such possible explanations for racial and ethnic health differentials within an integrated framework. It provides a concise summary of available research and lays out a research agenda to address the many uncertainties in current knowledge. It recommends, for instance, looking at health differentials across the life course and deciphering the links between factors presumably producing differentials and biopsychosocial mechanisms that lead to impaired health.
