Book Procedures for Developing Allowable Properties for a Single Species Under ASTM D1990 and Computer Programs Useful for the Calculations

Download or read book Procedures for Developing Allowable Properties for a Single Species Under ASTM D1990 and Computer Programs Useful for the Calculations written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ASTM D1990, gbsEstablishing Allowable Properties for Visually Graded Dimension Lumber from In-Grade Tests of Full-Size Specimens, gcs is the consensus standard used to make submissions of allowable properties for many U.S., Canadian, and foreign species to the Board of Review of the American Lumber Standards Committee. Recently, it has become apparent how difficult it is to perform the calculations for such a submission. Some calculations are clearly specified in the standard; in some cases the standard merely indicates a need to make an adjustment but does not specify how to do so. This report discusses in detail how to develop allowable properties under the standard in a manner that is consistent with current practice. Many calculations in the standard are difficult and errors are easily made, particularly when using a spreadsheet; this report introduces a set of computer programs that perform some of the difficult calculations, thereby reducing the potential for errors. These computer programs can be run over the World Wide Web, or Fortran versions of the programs can be downloaded, compiled, and run on a usergass computer.

Book Some Bivariate Distributions for Modeling the Strength Properties of Lumber

Download or read book Some Bivariate Distributions for Modeling the Strength Properties of Lumber written by Richard Arnold Johnson and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accurate modeling of the joint stochastic nature of the strength properties of dimension lumber is essential to the determination of reliability-based design safety factors. This report reviews the major techniques for obtaining bivariate distributions and then discusses bivariate distributions whose marginal distributions suggest they might be useful for modeling the joint distribution of two strength properties. Finally, we pick a bivariate Weibull distribution and show that we can write its likelihood function under a proof loading scheme, offering the possibility that it can be used to model the joint distribution of two properties that must each be measured using a destructive test.

Book Effect of Drying Methods on Warp and Grade of 2 by 4 s from Small diameter Ponderosa Pine

Download or read book Effect of Drying Methods on Warp and Grade of 2 by 4 s from Small diameter Ponderosa Pine written by William Turner Simpson and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two studies were performed to characterize and control warp in nominal 2- by 4-in. (standard 38- by 89-mm) dimension lumber sawn from small-diameter ponderosa pine trees. One study was conducted at a commercial sawmill with trees harvested in central Arizona. The other study was conducted at the USDA Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory, Madison, Wisconsin, in small experimental kilns with lumber from trees harvested in central Idaho. The three main variables in the studies were top loading, presteaming, and a high-temperature kiln schedule. A limited study of hot press drying was also included. The high-temperature kiln schedule in the experimental kilns reduced drying time to about half that of the conventional temperature schedule. Press drying time was slightly more than 3 h. Crook and bow caused most of the warp and the grade loss from warp. There was no evidence that presteaming affected warp or grade loss from warp. Top loading had a modest effect in reducing warp and grade loss from warp. High-temperature drying did not affect measured warp compared with the conventional temperature schedule. Grade loss from warp was less in high-temperature than in conventional temperature dried lumber. This might be explained by differences in moisture content change during storage. Press drying did not reduce warp or grade loss from warp.
