Book Critical Metals Handbook

Download or read book Critical Metals Handbook written by Gus Gunn and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-03-03 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mankind is using a greater variety of metals in greater quantities than ever before. As a result there is increasing global concern over the long-term availability of secure and adequate supplies of the metals needed by society. Critical metals, which are those of growing economic importance that might be susceptible to future scarcity, are a particular worry. For many of these we have little information on how they are concentrated in the Earth’s crust, how to extract them from their ores, and how to use, recycle and dispose of them effectively and safely. Published with the British Geological Survey, the Critical Metals Handbook brings together a wealth of knowledge on critical metals and provides a foundation for improving the future security and sustainability of critical metal supplies. Written by international experts, it provides a unique source of authoritative information on diverse aspects of the critical metals, including geology, deposits, processing, applications, recycling, environmental issues and markets. It is aimed at a broad non-specialist audience, including professionals and academics working in the exploration and mining sectors, in mining finance and investment, and in mineral processing and manufacturing. It will also be a valuable reference for policy makers concerned with resource management, land-use planning, eco-efficiency, recycling and related fields.

Book Handbook of Mineral Elements in Food

Download or read book Handbook of Mineral Elements in Food written by de la Guardia and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-04-20 with total page 792 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mineral elements are found in foods and drink of all differenttypes, from drinking water through to mothers’ milk. Thesearch for mineral elements has shown that many trace andultratrace-level elements presented in food are required for ahealthy life. By identifying and analysing these elements, it ispossible to evaluate them for their specific health-givingproperties, and conversely, to isolate their less desirableproperties with a view to reducing or removing them altogether fromsome foods. The analysis of mineral elements requires a number ofdifferent techniques – some methods may be suitable for onefood type yet completely unsuited to another. The Handbook of Mineral Elements in Food is the firstbook to bring together the analytical techniques, the regulatoryand legislative framework, and the widest possible range of foodtypes into one comprehensive handbook for food scientists andtechnologists. Much of the book is based on the authors’ owndata, most of which is previously unpublished, making theHandbook of Mineral Elements in Food a vital andup-to-the-minute reference for food scientists in industry andacademia alike. Analytical chemists, nutritionists and food policymakers will also find it an invaluable resource. Showcasing contributions from international researchers, andconstituting a major resource for our future understanding of thetopic, the Handbook of Mineral Elements in Food is anessential reference and should be found wherever food science andtechnology are researched and taught.

Book excerpt: This extensively updated new edition of the widely acclaimed Treatise on Geochemistry has increased its coverage beyond the wide range of geochemical subject areas in the first edition, with five new volumes which include: the history of the atmosphere, geochemistry of mineral deposits, archaeology and anthropology, organic geochemistry and analytical geochemistry. In addition, the original Volume 1 on "Meteorites, Comets, and Planets" was expanded into two separate volumes dealing with meteorites and planets, respectively. These additions increased the number of volumes in the Treatise from 9 to 15 with the index/appendices volume remaining as the last volume (Volume 16). Each of the original volumes was scrutinized by the appropriate volume editors, with respect to necessary revisions as well as additions and deletions. As a result, 27% were republished without major changes, 66% were revised and 126 new chapters were added. In a many-faceted field such as Geochemistry, explaining and understanding how one sub-field relates to another is key. Instructors will find the complete overviews with extensive cross-referencing useful additions to their course packs and students will benefit from the contextual organization of the subject matter Six new volumes added and 66% updated from 1st edition. Book Arsenic in Ground Water

    Book Details:
  • Author : Alan H. Welch
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2007-05-08
  • ISBN : 0306479567
  • Pages : 476 pages

Download or read book Arsenic in Ground Water written by Alan H. Welch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in arsenic in ground water has greatly increased in the past decade because of the increased awareness of human health effects and the costs of avoidance or treatment of ground water supplies used for consumption. The goal of this book is to provide a description of the basic processes that affect arsenic occurrence and transport by providing sufficient background information on arsenic geochemistry and descriptions of hi- arsenic ground water, both affected and unaffected by human activity. An understanding of thermodynamics, adsorption, and the speciation of arsenic in solid phases, which are described in first three chapters, is needed to predict the fate of arsenic in ground water systems. Large-scale and deep movement of ground water can and has redistributed arsenic in the near surface environment, as described in the next two chapters. These large-scale systems can affect large volumes of both ground water and surface water, such as in the Yellowstone system, and can produce mineralised zones that subsequently release arsenic to ground water supplies. Regional identification of high-arsenic ground water and its consumption as described in the next three chapters clearly demonstrates a need for increased wat- quality monitoring, particularly in south and southeast Asia. Chapters 9-11 provide examples of high arsenic ground water associated with sulfide mineral oxidation and alkaline conditions. Finally, smaller scale studies of the effects of human activities that have produced high-arsenic ground water and methods for attenuation of ground water are presented.
