Book Minnesota Legal Ethics

Download or read book Minnesota Legal Ethics written by William J. Wernz and published by . This book was released on 2019-07-15 with total page 828 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William J. Wernz is one of the nation's foremost authorities on legal ethics. Formerly ethics counsel for Dorsey & Whitney LLP in Minneapolis, he served first as a staff attorney and later as director of the Office of Lawyers Professional Responsibility, where he prosecuted attorney discipline cases. From the author: Minnesota Legal Ethics is the culmination of my life's work. My practice of law has centered on legal ethics since 1981. Before becoming a lawyer in 1977, I was aprofessor and student of religious studies and philosophy, including ethics. I have approached legal ethics, especially the Rules of Professional Conduct, from everyangle: investigation, prosecution, defense, advice, administration, drafting, writing, and teaching. Writing this treatise is an opportunity to bring together the thoughts and work of a professional lifetime. In May 2014 this treatise reached its first complete form. A new edition of the treatise appears annually, with updates from the preceding year and the first fewmonths of the current year. For example, the eighth edition appears in the summer of 2018, with updates of cases and other sources from approximately March 2017through approximately March 2018. I have worked steadily on the treatise since 2009. The core of this treatise is a commentary on applications of the Rules of Professional Conduct in Minnesota. The applications are manifold, including lawyer discipline, disqualification, law firm administration, policies, and advisory opinions. In addition to case law and personal experience, articles published by Officeof Lawyers Professional Responsibility (OLPR) lawyers are an important source. The treatise also regularly refers to two national authorities: The Restatement (Third) of the Law Governing Lawyers (2000) and Formal Opinions of the ABA Standing Committee on Ethics and Professional Responsibility. OLPR and the Lawyers Board frequently cite these authorities.
