Book Dodge s Geography of Minnesota

Download or read book Dodge s Geography of Minnesota written by Christopher Webber Hall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dodge's Geography of Minnesota: Part I, Minnesota as a Whole; Part II, the Growth and Development of Cities; Part III, Statistics and Aids to Teachers In a text-book Of geography we study the relation Of one state or group of states to the whole country of which our home region is a part, and our commercial relations to the-world as a whole. It follows that in such a treatment the characteristics that distinguish our own home regions must largely be lost to sight in the consideration of the great features that distinguish the country as a whole. In a special text-book devoted to one state or group of states we can learn more about our own region, its important surface features, its climate, the occupations of its people, it; products, its local commerce, its history, its chief cities, and many other features of great interest to us. Hence we need to make a special study of our home locality after we have studied the larger region of which it is an important part. A local geography is not only valuable for study in school that we may know well the region about us, but it is valuable also as a reference volume to which we can refer for facts about our own state in our homes whenever in our reading or conversation some question arises concerning our own state which needs to be answered at once. In this text-book the surface features, the climate, the soil and other natural resources which determine the occupations of the people are studied first because they are the large features which determine the distribution and success of industries. One of the great lessons the student learns in geography is Man's absolute dependence upon Nature for his existence. In this state, as in other regions, topography and climate pointed out the path of development that communities must follow in order to make sure their existence within its borders. In the pages that follow, the student finds traced the fundamental conditions that have moulded the life of the state. After these come the historical events that are landmarks in its growth, and then the study of the industrial and commercial features is taken up. To these, which explain the reasons for the development and growth of the larger cities, and which show us why our own region is important to the country as a whole, careful attention has been given. Book Exploring Minnesota Through Project Based Learning

Download or read book Exploring Minnesota Through Project Based Learning written by Carole Marsh and published by Gallopade International. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring Minnesota through Project-Based Leaning includes 50 well-thought-out projects designed for grades 3-5. In assigning your students projects that dig into MinnesotaÕs geography, history, government, economy, current events, and famous people, you will deepen their appreciation and understanding of Minnesota while simultaneously improving their analytical skills and ability to recognize patterns and big-picture themes. Project-based learning today is much different than the craft-heavy classroom activities popular in the past. Inquiry, planning, research, collaboration, and analysis are key components of project-based learning activities today. However, that doesnÕt mean creativity, individual expression, and fun are out. They definitely arenÕt! Each project is designed to help students gain important knowledge and skills that are derived from standards and key concepts at the heart of academic subject areas. Students are asked to analyze and solve problems, to gather and interpret data, to develop and evaluate solutions, to support their answers with evidence, to think critically in a sustained way, and to use their newfound knowledge to formulate new questions worthy of exploring. While some projects are more complex and take longer than others, they all are set up in the same structure. Each begins with the central project-driving questions, proceeds through research and supportive questions, has the student choose a presentation option, and ends with a broader-view inquiry. Rubrics for reflection and assessments are included, too. This consistent framework will make it easier for you assign projects and for your students to follow along and consistently meet expectations. Encourage your students to take charge of their projects as much as possible. As a teacher, you can act as a facilitator and guide. The projects are structured such that students can often work through the process on their own or through cooperation with their classmates.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Minnesota: A Brief Sketch of Its History, Resources and Advantages From this time the vague N orthwest began to emerge from chaos, and to be better known of men; although it was to be three-quarters Of a century, or more, before all of the territory now known as the State Of Minnesota should become one coherent and recognized commonwealth. The day of adventure had passed. The day-of actual exploration, with a view to settlement and ultimate cultiva tion, was to begin. But-the northwest territory was as yet as little defined, and subject to as many conflicting claims, as we're the western portions of the grants of those great English companies whose American colonies pretended to reach from one ocean to the other. Book Minnesota s Changing Geography

Book excerpt: Minnesota's Changing Geography was first published in 1959.This book is intended to help children understand how the state of Minnesota developed as it did, what it looks like today, and why. The story, pictures, and maps tell of Minnesota's changing geography, but the subject embraces a good deal that lies beyond the boundaries of one state. The settlement of the land, its industry and commerce, its climate - these and other parts of the story give young readers perspective to see Minnesota as part of the larger community of the nation and the world. By showing how the land and its use have changed, the book also helps children to realize that their environment is not static, but constantly changing. In each section of the book, the author describes the characteristic features of a major region or settlement of the state. He shows why the dairy region, the corn belt, the timber country, the mining range, and other important economic areas developed in their distinctive ways. He describes the various kinds of settlements to be seen in the state - farm-trade villages, towns, cities, and suburbs. He traces the networks of transportation - rail routes, waterways, truck routes, pipelines, airways, and city traffic. Finally, he explains the elements of local, state, and federal government.A series of tables at the back of the book provides statistics on Minnesota's population, county by county, on area, temperature, and rainfall, and significant dates in the state's history. For children in the classroom, in the library, or at home, here is Minnesota in its physical, real-life sense, presented as a part of a large and changing world. Readable, authentic, up-to-date, the book was prepared with the help of consultants from the Minneapolis public schools.

Book The Government of Minnesota Its History and Administration Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Government of Minnesota Its History and Administration Classic Reprint written by Frank L. McVey and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Government of Minnesota, Its History and Administration It has been the purpose of the author to present in a small volume a harmonious picture of the history and government of the commonwealth of Minnesota. There is a pressing and crying need for good teaching in civil government, a subject which has been and is largely neglected in our public schools. To facilitate such teaching carefully prepared books are necessary. This volume is an attempt thoroughly to analyze the functions of a State government, and in addition to open the way to teacher and pupil to the sources of information. At the foot of many pages are numerous references, while at the end of the book is an appendix containing historical material for more extensive work than the text affords. With such aid the teacher can go back of text-book statement into the spirit of our commonwealth's institutions. The effort in Chapters I and II is to place the history of the State before the student; following these chapters are two others on the general machinery of the government. The remainder of the book is devoted to the actual workings of the machinery. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
