Book excerpt: State Fair Carousel: Saving a Minnesota Treasure is the saga of a popular antique wooden carousel about to be sold to collectors when the community mounted a dramatic and successful effort to save it. Now called Cafesjian's Carousel, it operates in Saint Paul's Como Park. The carousel was created for the Minnesota State Fair in 1914 by Michigan entrepreneur Austin McFadden, and for 75 years riding it was a family tradition for generations of farm and city dwellers alike. In 1988 Minnesotans learned that 20 horses had been removed from the carousel and trucked to New York to be auctioned to collectors. With the auction only a month away, the news set off a community-wide campaign to save the carousel. The authors established a nonprofit organization to rescue, restore, and operate the carousel. With the City of Saint Paul backing their $1.3 million bank loan, the couple purchased the intact carousel just moments before it would have been broken up forever. Then they undertook fundraising to repay the loan. Extraordinary support from Saint Paul business executive Gerard L. Cafesjian led to the carousel being named in his honor. Trained volunteers spent 10 years carefully restoring the carousel's 68 horses to their original paint, repairing wood damage, and recreating overhead scenery panels destroyed in a 1939 fire that also damaged some of the horses. One of only two antique carousels to have undergone a museum-quality original paint restoration and still operate for the public, Cafesjian's Carousel is housed in a million-dollar Victorian pavilion and operated by volunteers. The authors describe their sometimes bumpy negotiations with city and business leaders, especially when a downtown Saint Paul location failed to produce enough riders. They recount the research through which they have identified its carver as David Lightfoot, not Frank Carretta as previous carousel historians had posited. They detail factors that make this Philadelphia Toboggan Company carousel unusual and describe measures they took to restore it. Finally, they call on the community to "write the next chapter" by providing leadership and volunteer skills to sustain the project.

Book Building Community Food Webs

Download or read book Building Community Food Webs written by Ken Meter and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2021-04-29 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our current food system has decimated rural communities and confined the choices of urban consumers. Even while America continues to ramp up farm production to astounding levels, net farm income is now lower than at the onset of the Great Depression, and one out of every eight Americans faces hunger. But a healthier and more equitable food system is possible. In Building Community Food Webs, Ken Meter shows how grassroots food and farming leaders across the U.S. are tackling these challenges by constructing civic networks. Overturning extractive economic structures, these inspired leaders are engaging low-income residents, farmers, and local organizations in their quest to build stronger communities. Community food webs strive to build health, wealth, capacity, and connection. Their essential element is building greater respect and mutual trust, so community members can more effectively empower themselves and address local challenges. Farmers and researchers may convene to improve farming practices collaboratively. Health clinics help clients grow food for themselves and attain better health. Food banks engage their customers to challenge the root causes of poverty. Municipalities invest large sums to protect farmland from development. Developers forge links among local businesses to strengthen economic trade. Leaders in communities marginalized by our current food system are charting a new path forward. Building Community Food Webs captures the essence of these efforts, underway in diverse places including Montana, Hawai‘i, Vermont, Arizona, Colorado, Indiana, and Minnesota. Addressing challenges as well as opportunities, Meter offers pragmatic insights for community food leaders and other grassroots activists alike.
