Book The Geography of Defence

Download or read book The Geography of Defence written by Michael Bateman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defence against military attack has had a considerable geographical impact. Urban morphology frequently owes more to the defence function than to any other, whilst local, regional and national economies are often intricately dependent on defence expenditure. It is also clear that the social geography of cities, both recently and in the past, has been affected by the presence of the military. Despite its importance, defence as a major government function has not been the focus of geographical analysis in the same way as housing , transport, health or education. This volume redresses this imbalance by demonstrating the geographical importance of defence in these vital areas.

Book excerpt: How public land has been stolen from us. Much has been written about Britain's trailblazing post-1970s privatization program, but the biggest privatization of them all has until now escaped scrutiny: the privatization of land. Since Margaret Thatcher took power in 1979, and hidden from the public eye, about 10 per cent of the entire British land mass, including some of its most valuable real estate, has passed from public to private hands. Forest land, defence land, health service land and above all else local authority land- for farming and school sports, for recreation and housing - has been sold off en masse. Why? How? And with what social, economic and political consequences? The New Enclosure provides the first ever study of this profoundly significant phenomenon, situating it as a centrepiece of neoliberalism in Britain and as a successor programme to the original eighteenth-century enclosures. With more public land still slated for disposal, the book identifies the stakes and asks what, if anything, can and should be done.

Book excerpt: Cyprus after World War II was - and continues to be - a focal point for diplomatic and military negotiations and disagreements between both local and international powers. In 'Britain and Cyprus', William Mallinson, a former British diplomat, has selected from a wealth of documents drawn from the National Archives, skilfully combining the chronology of events with vital themes and motifs. Several of these documents have been obtained directly from the Foreign Office and Ministry of Defence, thanks to the help - and pressure - of the Information Commissioner, under the Freedom of Information Act. Its blend of documentation with incisive exploration and analysis makes this book an invaluable resource for all those interested in the politics of the Eastern Mediterranean, British history and in the process of policy formulation.

Book The Legitimacy of The European Union through Legal Rationality

Download or read book The Legitimacy of The European Union through Legal Rationality written by Richard Ball and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Third country nationals (TCNs) play an important part in the economy of the European Union, reflected in the rights granted to them under European Union Law. Political expediency is however shaped by world, regional and domestic influences that in turn determine policy towards third country nationals and their legal rights to freedom of movement. This book examines the concept of political legitimacy within the European Union through the principles of legal rationality, focusing in particular on the European Union’s policy towards third country nationals. Richard Ball argues that for legal doctrine to be rational it must display the requirements of formal, instrumental and substantive rationality, each mutually exclusive and essential. In taking this position of legal rationality, the book focuses on free movement rights of TCNs within EU treaties and implementing legislation, the Area of Freedom Security and Justice, and Association Agreements. Ball concludes that the stance of European Union Law towards third country nationals lacks legitimacy, and suggests possible new directions that EU policy should take in the future.

Book The Silent Deep

    Book Details:
  • Author : James Jinks
  • Publisher : Penguin UK
  • Release : 2015-10-29
  • ISBN : 0141973706
  • Pages : 832 pages

Download or read book The Silent Deep written by James Jinks and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2015-10-29 with total page 832 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The Ministry of Defence does not comment upon submarine operations' is the standard response of officialdom to enquiries about the most secretive and mysterious of Britain's armed forces, the Royal Navy Submarine Service. Written with unprecedented co-operation from the Service itself and privileged access to documents and personnel, The Silent Deep is the first authoritative history of the Submarine Service from the end of the Second World War to the present. It gives the most complete account yet published of the development of Britain's submarine fleet, its capabilities, its weapons, its infrastructure, its operations and above all - from the testimony of many submariners and the first-hand witness of the authors - what life is like on board for the denizens of the silent deep. Dramatic episodes are revealed for the first time: how HMS Warspite gathered intelligence against the Soviet Navy's latest ballistic-missile-carrying submarine in the late 1960s; how HMS Sovereign made what is probably the longest-ever trail of a Soviet (or Russian) submarine in 1978; how HMS Trafalgar followed an exceptionally quiet Soviet 'Victor III', probably commanded by a Captain known as 'the Prince of Darkness', in 1986. It also includes the first full account of submarine activities during the Falklands War. But it was not all victories: confrontations with Soviet submarines led to collisions, and the extent of losses to UK and NATO submarine technology from Cold War spy scandals are also made more plain here than ever before. In 1990 the Cold War ended - but not for the Submarine Service. Since June 1969, it has been the last line of national defence, with the awesome responsibility of carrying Britain's nuclear deterrent. The story from Polaris to Trident - and now 'Successor' - is a central theme of the book. In the year that it is published, Russian submarines have once again been detected off the UK's shores. As Britain comes to decide whether to renew its submarine-carried nuclear deterrent, The Silent Deep provides an essential historical perspective.
