Book excerpt: “Mine” is one of the first words babies learn, and by the time we grow up, the idea of ownership seems natural, whether we are buying a cup of coffee or a house. But who controls the space behind your airplane seat: you, reclining, or the squished laptop user behind you? Why is plagiarism wrong, but it’s okay to knock off a recipe or a dress design? And after a snowstorm, why does a chair in the street hold your parking space in Chicago, while in New York you lose both the space and the chair? In Mine!, Michael Heller and James Salzman, two of the world’s leading authorities on ownership, explain these puzzles and many more. Remarkably, they reveal, there are just six simple rules that everyone uses to claim everything. Owners choose the rule that steers us to do what they want. But we can pick differently. This is true not just for airplane seats, but also for battles over digital privacy, climate change, and wealth inequality. Mine! draws on mind-bending, often infuriating, and always fascinating accounts from business, history, courtrooms, and everyday life to reveal how the rules of ownership control our lives and shape our world.

Book A Life Like Mine

Book excerpt: As I have recalled my life in order to create this memoir, I've wondered what physical traits and abilities will be passed down to future generations of this family. I've also wondered if my love of the visual arts is a family inheritance I've received through some unknown ancestor in the distant past. We're all part of something larger than our individual lives--although there are clearly more questions than answers as far as that is concerned.

Book Intrepid Explorer

Download or read book Intrepid Explorer written by J. David Lowell and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2014-10-03 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When seven-year-old Dave Lowell was camped out at his father’s mine in the hills of southern Arizona in 1935, he knew he had found his calling. “Life couldn’t get any better than this,” he recalls. “I didn’t know what science was, but wisps of scientific thought were already working into my plan.” So began the legendary career of the engineer, geologist, explorer, and international businessman whose life is recounted in his own words in this captivating book. An Arizona native with family roots in territorial times, Lowell grew from modest beginnings on a ranch near Nogales to become a major world figure in the fields of minerals, mining, and economic geology. He has personally discovered more copper than anyone in history and has developed multibillion-dollar gold and copper mines that have changed the economies of nations. And although he has consulted for corporations in the field of mining, he has largely operated as an independent agent and explorer, the architect of his own path and success. His life’s story unfolds in four stages: his early education in his field, on-the-job learning at sites in the United States and Mexico, development of exploration strategies, and finally, the launch of his own enterprises and companies. Recurring themes in Lowell’s life include the strict personal, ethical, and tactical policies he requires of his colleagues; his devotion to his family; and his distaste for being away from the field in a corporate office, even to this day. The magnitude of Lowell’s overall success is evident in his list of mine discoveries, as well as in his scientific achievements and the enormous respect his friends and colleagues have had for him throughout his lengthy career, which he continues to zealously pursue.

Book One Life Mine

Download or read book One Life Mine written by Emma S. Garrod and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-06-26 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third reader of my long-gone school days said something like, Life is a river, from its small and unimportant beginning it flows steadily onward. It may hesitate, but never stop until early or late its end is reached. By anyones calculations, the river of my life has been a long and, on the whole, a very placid one. No treacherous rapids or impassable falls have ever disturbed its steady flow. I have filled many pages with recollections of what to some may seem a very humdrum and uneventful life. Arent most lives just that except to the individuals who have lived them? This self-appointed task has been a very pleasant one. I trust that someone sometime in the future will find pleasure and perhaps a bit of knowledge hidden in these pages. It is said that three score years and ten is ones allotment for life; beyond that, one lives on borrowed time. It has never been clear to me just where and from whom this time is borrowed. I must say, the last decade and a half that I have borrowed from somewhere have been most satisfactory. I most sincerely hope that my credit will hold good awhile longer

Book I Don t Wish Nobody to Have a Life Like Mine

Download or read book I Don t Wish Nobody to Have a Life Like Mine written by David Chura and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2010-03-01 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early 1990s, thanks to inflamed rhetoric in the media about “superpredators” and a wave of get-tough-on-crime laws, the number of juveniles in prison has risen by 35 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Justice, and their placement in adult prison has increased by 208 percent, according to a 2007 survey by the Campaign for Youth. Since 1992, every state except Nebraska has passed laws making it easier to prosecute youth under eighteen as adults, and most states have legalized harsher sentences for juveniles. David Chura taught high school in a New York county penitentiary for ten years and saw these young people—and the effects of our laws on them—up close. Here he introduces us to the real kids behind the hysteria: vibrant, animated kids full of humor and passion; kids who were born into families broken up and beaten down by drugs, gang violence, AIDS, poverty, and abuse. He also introduces us to wardens, correctional officers, family members, and doctors, and shows how everyone in this world is a child of disappointment. We meet Wade, who carries a stack of photos of his HIV-positive mother in his pocket to take out and share with pride. Khalil has spent all fifteen years of his life in foster care, group homes, juvenile detention, and mental hospitals, yet has channeled his inner demons into poetry. There’s Anna, a hard-nosed one-time teenage drug baroness who serves as a tutor to students and older women alike; Dominic, a father of two who only reads in jail, and only the Harry Potter books; and Eddyberto, a bright student and self-taught artist whose wildly creative drawings are confiscated and used to accuse him of being a potential terrorist and threat to national security. Then there’s O’Shay, a big, burly, snarling Bronx-Irish classroom officer with a surprising protective side for the underdog, and Ms. Wharton, a hallway officer with a spiky demeanor but a soft spot for animals. In language that carries both the grit of the street and the expansiveness of poetry, Chura breaks down the divisions we so easily erect between us and them, the keepers and the kept—and shows how, ultimately, we as individuals and as a society have failed these young people.
