It also provides a wealth of information on exploitable salts, in a comprehensive volume has been assembled and organized to provide quick access to relevant information on all matters related to evaporites and associated brines. In addition, there are summaries of evaporite karst hazards, exploitative methods and problems that can arise in dealing with evaporites in conventional and solution mining. This second edition has been revised and extended, with three new chapters focusing on ore minerals in different temperature settings and a chapter on meta-evaporites. Written by a field specialist in research and exploration, the book presents a comprehensive overview of the realms of low- and high-temperature evaporite evolution. It is aimed at earth science professionals, sedimentologists, oil and gas explorers, mining geologists as well as environmental geologists.

Book excerpt: An epic story of courage, survival, and tragedy, the Disaster at Cane Creek is the account of the devastating potash mine explosion that occurred August 27, 1963, only hours after a miraculous Sheppton mine rescue in Pennsylvania. Twenty-five miners working the afternoon shift were now caught in a horrific explosion at Texas Gulf Sulphur's new Cane Creek Potash Mine. Located in the scenic red rock canyon country just west of Moab, Utah along the banks of the Colorado River, the mine site quickly became the scene of an intense mine rescue operation. With no knowledge of any survivors, the race against time was set in full motion as expert mine rescue teams battled to overcome smoke, gases, and groundwater pouring down the mine shaft which was as deep as two Empire State Buildings stacked on top of each other. Disaster at Cane Creek is thoroughly spellbinding as it shares history's stage during the iconic 1960's with other relevant back and side stories during the Kennedy Administration. Author Kymberly Mele masterfully weaves together this powerful drama, putting the reader on the scene of this true-life story as events unfold. She conveys the essence of the people involved, communicates what they endured, and captures the sheer will, determination and fight for survival that is both riveting and inspirational.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Potash is the term generally given to potassium chloride, but it is also loosely applied to the various potassium compounds used in agriculture: po tassium sulfate, potassium nitrate or double salts of potassium and magne sium sulfate (generally langbeinite, K S0 • 2MgS0 ). Sometimes the var 2 4 4 ious compounds are differentiated by the terms muriate of potash, sulfate of potash, etc. When referring to ores, or in geology, all of the naturally found potassium salts are called "potash ores". However, originally potash referred only to crude potassium carbonate, since its sole source was the leaching of wood ashes in large pots. This "pot ash" product was generally recovered from near-seacoast plants, such as the saltwort bush, whose ashes were richer in potassium than sodium carbonate. Inland plant's ashes were generally higher in sodium carbonate, giving rise to the word alkali from the Arabic word for soda ash, al kali. The term was then carried over after potassium was discovered to form the latin word for it, kalium. The recovery of potash from ashes became a thriving small cottage industry throughout the world's coastal areas, and developing economies, such as the early set tlers in the United States were able to generate some much-needed income from its recovery and sale. This industry rapidly phased out with the advent of the LeBanc process for producing soda ash in 1792, and the discovery about the same time of the massive sodium-potassium nitrate deposits in the Atacama Desert of Chile.

Book Alluvial Fan Flooding

    Book Details:
  • Author : National Research Council
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 1996-10-07
  • ISBN : 0309185491
  • Pages : 182 pages

Download or read book Alluvial Fan Flooding written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-10-07 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alluvial fans are gently sloping, fan-shaped landforms common at the base of mountain ranges in arid and semiarid regions such as the American West. Floods on alluvial fans, although characterized by relatively shallow depths, strike with little if any warning, can travel at extremely high velocities, and can carry a tremendous amount of sediment and debris. Such flooding presents unique problems to federal and state planners in terms of quantifying flood hazards, predicting the magnitude at which those hazards can be expected at a particular location, and devising reliable mitigation strategies. Alluvial Fan Flooding attempts to improve our capability to determine whether areas are subject to alluvial fan flooding and provides a practical perspective on how to make such a determination. The book presents criteria for determining whether an area is subject to flooding and provides examples of applying the definition and criteria to real situations in Arizona, California, New Mexico, Utah, and elsewhere. The volume also contains recommendations for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which is primarily responsible for floodplain mapping, and for state and local decisionmakers involved in flood hazard reduction.
