Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mining and Ore-Dressing Machinery: A Comprehensive Treatise Dealing With the Modern Practice of Winning Both Metalliferous and Non-Metalliferous Minerals Were we to divide the radius 30 ft. Into six equal parts, and calculate the angles at each point, we should find them correspond nearly with the means of those given by Smeaton and others. Mills are generally made with four strong wooden arms or radii, fixed firmly in a central socket, and steadied and stiffened by tie-rods, connecting their extremities together, and with a projecting strut on the central boss. The width of each sail at the extreme should be about half of the radius, so that in a mill 60 ft. Diameter, or 30 ft. Radius, each sail would be 15 ft. Wide at the extreme. The part of the arm next the centre for about 71; of the radius, that is, 5 ft. In the case supposed, is not fitted with sails because the surface there is so little effective, as well from its short leverage as from its obstructing the wind reflected from the head of the turret behind it. The width at the inner end should be of the radius, or 10 ft. The surface of each sail is therefore 312% sq. Ft., and the total of the four is 312% X 4 1250 sq. Ft. The total area of the circle 60 ft. In diameter is somewhat above 2800 sq. Ft., so that not half the surface of the circle is clothed with sails. There would be no disadvantage in extending the surface by making the sails broader or more numerous, until it became of the whole surface. Beyond this additional sail-surface is disadvantageous, for it appears to obstruct the free passage of the currents re ected from the sails, and thus clogs their motions. It is found advantageous to arrange the surface of the sail somewhat in the proportions of Fig. 2, which represents the front View of one sail. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mineral Processing Technology, Third Edition: An Introduction to the Practical Aspects of Ore Treatment and Mineral Recovery details the fundamentals of contemporary ore processing-techniques. The title first introduces the basics of ore-processing, and then proceeds to tackling technical topics in the subsequent chapters. The text covers methods and procedures in ore handling, industrial screening, and ore sorting. The selection also deals with ore-processing equipment, such as crushers and grinding mills. The book will be of great use to students and professionals of disciplines involved in mining industry.

Book The Theory and Practice of Ore Dressing

Download or read book The Theory and Practice of Ore Dressing written by Edward S. Wiard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-27 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory and Practice of Ore Dressing In this work an attempt has been made to cover in a single volume the whole subject of ore dressing as applied at metalliferous mines in western America. The subject is treated in a manner designed to be of value and assistance to several classes of men engaged or interested in the treatment of ore by concentration processes. While the book is written largely as an aid to the mine manager or engineer in charge of mining enterprises, it is believed that the millman also will find in it much of value relating to the care of machines intrusted to his charge. It is not expected that the work will displace the hard-earned experience of the metallurgical engineer, but a man of that class will find in the book many useful and practical data. The needs of the student have not been forgotten, and a sufficient amount of theory has been introduced to give him a comprehension of some of the underlying principles of the art. There is very little working theory in ore dressing, and what theory may be deduced is mostly explanatory of the main tendencies to which particles of ore are subjected in the different treatment processes. Unfortunately, as the art stands today, ore particles are subject to other tendencies of which no satisfactory measure can be made. There is, at present, no positive separation machine among ore-dressing devices. All the means employed to effect separation merely tend to this end. It seems possible that certain positive mechanical principles will be discovered by which each and every grain will be forced to pursue a path depending on its specific gravity although gravity may not be the guiding force. The direct application, of these forces by machinery, owing to the simplicity and cheapness of this mode of effecting concentration, would seem to be the goal toward which inventors should work. In preparing a single-volume work on ore dressing much must be omitted, due to the wealth of material from which to choose and the necessity of treating standard practice in so small a compass. Hence in the present volume stamps have received scant consideration, being machines which find little or no application in the ordinary concentrating mill. Amalgamation is not mentioned; this process being deemed outside the scope of a work on concentration which is essentially the art of enriching ores by mechanical means. The student will miss any reference to centrifugal machines or concentration by centrifugal force. Screen ratios also receive no mention, since the proper succession of screen sizes should be determined by experimentation.
