Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mining and Mining Investments One chapter is devoted to showing the magnitude of the interests still involved after excluding coal and iron; and because these last are usually considered more as commercial undertakings than mining risks, so investments in them have been put in a different category from that in which it used to be the custom to include the speculation in mines of gold, silver, tin, copper, lead, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Practical Mining

Download or read book Practical Mining written by John G. Murphy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Mining: A Field Manual for Mining Engineers; With Hints to Investors in Mining Properties The percentage which is realized from an investment is governed to some extent by the nature of the security. If it is such as is not liable to much fluctuation, it is sought for permanent investment, even at a low rate of interest. Generally we may say: The profit to be expected from any investment should be commensurate with the risk taken. People who are glad to realize 5 per cent on real estate will expect to realize 25 to 30 per cent, and often more than this amount, on a mining venture, as it is called; and it must be admitted that it is not too much for a purchaser of min ing-stock to expect under existing condi tions: but the intelligent operator, not in mining stock but in mines, will be satisfied with less. Naturally, a mining investment should be expected to pay a much higher rate of interest than real estate or railway securities, because it is less permanent. The chief cause of the uncertainty in min ing ventures, however, is the fact that the most of those offered to the public are not expected to be productive for any length of time, if at all. To get an accu rate idea of the mining industry would require severe study and time, so that the majority of operators prefer to pay for obtaining the necessary knowledge, and success or failure is chiefly due to the value of this purchase. The following pages are written at the request of friends, with the purpose of pointing out as briefly as possible the nature of the knowledge to be sought, and by exposing some of the sources, to limit the frequency of error. Book Mining Schools in the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mining Schools in the United States Classic Reprint written by John A. Church and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mining Schools in the United States Our own country presents to-day an example of the dependence of industry upon knowledge which is quite as remarkable as that given above. Commissioner Ross Browne, in his report on our Western mines, says that experienced investors in mining property will not pay for a mine more than two and a half times its yearly profit. That is to say, they do not consider it a safe investment unless it returns forty per cent. Upon its cost.* The reason of this is plain. With no means of educating miners to their work, the conduct of mines in this country is a lamentable story of mismanagement, energy wrongly directed, and consequent great losses. The thousand millions of gold dollars that have been won from the ground in California are but an inadequate representation of the real wealth that existed there.1' Observers have estimated the losses which were at first caused by ignorant and hasty methods of working at two thirds of the gold really at hand, and none have put them at less than one half. A better state of affairs has gradually grown up, but the losses to this day are very much larger than they should be. In California, however. Book California Mines and Minerals Classic Reprint

Download or read book California Mines and Minerals Classic Reprint written by Charles G Yale and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from California Mines and Minerals Compiled by chas. G. Yale, Statistician State Mining Bureau. HE mining interests oi_ the State of California are so diversified, and the industry is extended over so wide an area, that it is difficult to describe the conditions which exist without using many pages of printed matter. For this reason it has been considered proper, in this pamphlet, to give merely a record of results, which will show in plain figures what is being accomplished by the miners of the State. This record shows that some forty-four mineral substances are being exploited, the annual valuation of which is now and increasing at the rate of about yearly, as capital is invested and more mines are opened. The older mines, too, having been well developed and equipped, are increasing their annual output, and thus also proving their permanency and value with depth. The climatic conditions are favorable to mining operations throughout the State, and means of transportation have been so improved as to greatly lessen costs of supplies, etc. There are abundant opportunities for the safe and profitable investment of capital in the various branches of the industry, as numerous claims which have been located have never been properly developed or equipped, their owners lacking the necessary means. Book Coal Mine Surveying Classic Reprint

Download or read book Coal Mine Surveying Classic Reprint written by A. T. Shurick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Coal Mine Surveying The rapid depletion of the primitive forests of America by fires and axe in recent years has raised the price of wood so rapidly that the mining industry is becoming alarmed as to its future supply of the big timber of which it has hitherto been such a prodigal consumer. Economy in the use of timber has been essential to commercial success in European mining for several generations and it was to the Old World that our operators went for their first systems of timberless mining. The use of steel and masonry for the support of mine shafts and tunnels has long been practised in Europe not only because of dear timber but because most mines there are considered to be long-term investments rather than temporary speculations. As this replacement of timber supports by other material involves no new mining system and has been thoroughly covered by other writers, it will not be described in this treatise. Though most of the mining methods considered consume some timber, their economy in that respect is so marked as to justify the use of a title Mining without Timber.
