Book Upgrading Tanzania s artisanal and small scale mining through investor partnerships

Download or read book Upgrading Tanzania s artisanal and small scale mining through investor partnerships written by Schoneveld, G.C. and published by CIFOR. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Key messages Foreign investors are increasingly partnering with ASM operators to access mineral rights and reserves, in a high risk and high cost environment. This has led to an upgrading of ASM operations and indirect technology diffusion across mining areas through 'demonstration effects', but this upgrading may disrupt existing benefit sharing arrangements between ASM laborers and pit-owners/license holders.Upgrading of ASM, through capital infusion and technology advancement, is also accompanied by high environmental and occupational health and safety risks. The constrained capacity of sub-national institutions and lack of cross-institutional coordination are hampering governmental efforts to monitor and improve environmental and occupational health and safety practices of partnerships.Policy discussion is needed on the ASM-investor partnership model’s benefits and risks, and how best to harness its potential to upgrade the sector, as well as support the sustainable development of rural mining communities.Effective institutional coordination among key government institutions, particularly at sub-national level, is urgently needed to reduce the high environmental and labor safety risks posed by mechanized small-scale mines.

They fell in love in the summer of 1956, and found a timeless moment of innocence and simple pleasure. In this acclaimed, intimate portrait of the American legend, Juanico gives us the Elvis she knew and loved—the Memphis boy with aw-shucks charm, impeccable manners, and an easy and irresistible sensuality. Their lives merged quickly and completely: Elvis’s mother, Gladys, felt June was her son’s last hope against the excesses of life on the road and the corruption of fame. But Elvis was on a train that no one could stop. Self-possessed, June chose her own path; she left Elvis, determined never to look back. But in this completely disarming, fascinating memoir, she does look back, and proves she has remembered everything, every conversation, every story, and every caress. Elvis: In the Twilight of Memory gives us an intimate and unforgettable portrait of the man who would be King.

Book Mining in Africa

Download or read book Mining in Africa written by Punam Chuhan-Pole and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2017-02-14 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focuses on the local and regional impact of large-scale gold mining in Africa in the context of a mineral boom in the region since 2000. It contributes to filling a gap in the literature on the welfare effects of mineral resources, which, until now, has concentrated more on the national or macroeconomic impacts. Economists have long been intrigued by the paradox that a rich endowment of natural resources may retard economic performance, particularly in the case of mineral-exporting developing countries. Studies of this phenomenon, known as the “resource curse,†? examine the economy-wide consequences of mineral exports.1 Africa’s resource boom has lifted growth, but has been less successful in improving people’s welfare. Yet much of the focus in academic and policy circles has been on appropriate management of the macro-fiscal and governance risks that have historically undermined development outcomes. This study focuses instead on the fortune of local communities where resources are located. It aims to better inform public policy and corporate behavior on the welfare of communities in Africa in which the extraction of resources takes place.
