Book The Fundamentals of Minimum Wage Fixing

Download or read book The Fundamentals of Minimum Wage Fixing written by François Eyraud and published by International Labour Organization. This book was released on 2005 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual draws on the ILO's comprehensive database containing the principal legal provisions and minimum wage fixing mechanisms in 100 countries. The minimum wage has had a long and turbulent history, and this study sheds light on its intricacies by providing a thorough overview of the institutions and practices in different countries. It outlines the main topics for debate concerning the effects of minimum wages on major social and economic variables such as employment, wage inequality, and poverty. The book considers the various procedures countries use for implementation, including the criteria employed to fix the minimum wage, and how they are linked to specific country objectives. It then measures the efficiency of the minimum wage, and focuses on its impact on employment as a major political issue. For the benefit of non-specialists, the validity of econometric models and their results are examined.

Book Dynamics of Wage Fixation in a Developing Economy

Download or read book Dynamics of Wage Fixation in a Developing Economy written by Benedict Y. Imbun and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a microcosm of issues of minimum wage determination in developing countries examined in the context of Papua New Guinea (PNG). With provision of parallels, it discusses the critical issues, process, and actors involved in determination of minimum wage. Like most governments in developing countries obsessed with economic development, the critical issue for the PNG government has been to ensure that wage levels and the wage structure harmonise as far as possible with the national development aspirations and on the other hand, social objectives are maintained through the prevention of exploitation of workers. Although, the twin issues of economic efficiency and social equity have not been easily compatible, this book's testimony of experiences in accommodating the issues has been the most challenging for PNG. The challenges faced and lessons learnt in determining and regulating minimum wage would reflect similar experiences for many developing countries.

Book Minimum Wage Regimes

Download or read book Minimum Wage Regimes written by Irene Dingeldey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-06-28 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book goes beyond traditional minimum wage research to investigate the interplay between different country and sectoral institutional settings and actors’ strategies in the field of minimum wage policies. It asks which strategies and motives, namely free collective bargaining, fair pay and/or minimum income protection, are emphasised by social actors with respect to the regulation and adaptation of (statutory) minimum wages. Taking an actor-centered institutionalist approach, and employing cross-country comparative studies, sector studies and single country accounts of change, the book relates institutional and labour market settings, actors’ strategies and power resources with policy and practice outcomes. Looking at the key pay equity indicators of low wage development and women’s over-representation among the low paid, it illuminates our understandings about the importance of historical junctures, specific constellations of social actors, and sector- and country-specific actor strategies. Finally, it underlines the important role of social dialogue in shaping an effective minimum wage policy. This book will be of key interest to scholars, students and policy-makers and practitioners in industrial relations, international human resource management, labour studies, labour market policy, inequality studies, trade union studies, European politics and political economy.
