Book excerpt: By means of a general theorem founded on the basis of Prandtl's theory of the lifting line, a method is derived for obtaining the minimum induced drag of airfoils in the proximity of ideal internal boundaries. The theorem is applied to the case of an ideal wing-fuselage combination consisting of a lifting line intersecting an infinitely long circular cylindrical to determine the effect of wing height on the minimum induced drag. The case of ideal combinations with constant circulation is also considered in detail, as it has been treated erroneously in a previous analysis. The analysis presented here incidentally reveals some errors in previous work on aerodynamic theory.

The interference burble of the critical midewing combination was shown to respond to modifications at the nose of the juncture and to be entirely suppressed with little or no adverse effect on the high-speed drag by special leading-edge fillets.

Induced drag is directly driven by the span load that the aircraft is flying at. The tools by which to calculate and predict induced drag we use were created by Ludwig Prandtl in 1903. Within a decade after Prandtl created a tool for calculating induced drag, Prandtl and his students had optimized the problem to solve the minimum induced drag for a wing of a given span, formalized and written about in 1920. This solution is quoted in textbooks extensively today. Prandtl did not stop with this first solution, and came to a dramatically different solution in 1932. Subsequent development of this 1932 solution solves several aeronautics design difficulties simultaneously, including maximum performance, minimum structure, minimum drag loss due to control input, and solution to adverse yaw without a vertical tail. Book excerpt: The lateral motion resulting from a disturbance of the type produced by asymmetric loss of thrust has been determined for a hypothetical average airplane equipped with an automatic pilot. Plots of the resultant motion and the various modes that constitute the motion are presented for controls fixed and for various amounts of automatic control. The automatic control is assumed to be of a type that produces aileron deflections proportional to the angle of bank and rudder deflections proportional to the angle of azimuth. The use of an automatic control may introduce either of two modes. The first mode is primarily a rolling oscillation; the second is a poorly damped long-period oscillation in azimuth and bank . The motion following any change in trim causes the airplane to reach a state of equilibrium on a different flight heading from that existing before the disturbance and the airplane assumes a new flight attitude.

Book excerpt: The wing-body interference theory of NACA TN 2677 applied to symmetrical wings in combination with quasi-cylindrical bodies permits the direct calculation of pressure-distribution changes produced by body shape changes. This theory is used to determine the relative magnitued of the wave-drag reduction produced by changes in cylinder cross-sectional area and that produced changes in cross-sectional shape (without change in area). The body distortion is expressed as a Fourier series, and an integral equation is derived for the body shape for minimum drag for each Fourier component. Thus the wave-drag reductions for the various Fourier harmonics are independent and additive.
