Book Minimum drag Ducted and Pointed Bodies of Revolution Based on Linearized Supersonic Theory

Download or read book Minimum drag Ducted and Pointed Bodies of Revolution Based on Linearized Supersonic Theory written by Hermon M. Parker and published by . This book was released on 1955 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The linearized drag integral for bodies of revolution at supersonic speeds is presented in a double-integral form which is not based on slender-body approximations but which reduces to the usual slender-body expression in the proper limit. With the aid of a suitably chosen auxiliary condition, the minimum-external-wave-drag problem is solved for a transition section connecting two semi-infinite cylinders. The projectile tip is a special case and is compared with the Von Karman projectile tip. Calculations are presented which indicate that the method of analysis gives good first-order results in the moderate supersonic range.

Book Minimum drag Ducted and Closed Three point Body of Revolution Based on Linearized Supersonic Theory

Download or read book Minimum drag Ducted and Closed Three point Body of Revolution Based on Linearized Supersonic Theory written by Hermon M. Parker and published by . This book was released on 1956 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of the three-point body of revolution that has minimum wave drag, based on linearized supersonic-flow theory, has been solved formally without resort to slender-body approximations. The evaluation of the source-distribution function, as well as the body shape, requires numerical procedures. Complete calculations are made for the special case of a closed body with a given section (the third point) at the mid-body position. The existence of a corner at the third point is found to be characteristic of a linear-theory solution of the minimum-drag three-point problem. The conclusion is reached that the influence between the forward end rearward portions of a closed body results in a small increase in the radii of the minimum-drag shape.

Book Analysis and Comparison with Theory of Flow field Measurements Near a Lifting Rotor in the Langley Full scale Tunnel

Download or read book Analysis and Comparison with Theory of Flow field Measurements Near a Lifting Rotor in the Langley Full scale Tunnel written by Harry H. Heyson and published by . This book was released on 1956 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of an investigation in the Langley full-scale tunnel of the induced flow near a lifting rotor are given. Measurements of stream angles and velocities were made in several transverse planes along and behind the rotor in four different conditions representative of the cruising and high-speed ranges of flight. These measurements indicate that available theory may be used to calculate with reasonable accuracy the induced flow over the forward three-quarters of the disk for these flight conditions provided that a realistic nonuniform rotor disk-load distribution is assumed. Rearward of the three-quarter-diameter point, calculations of the induced velocity are increasingly inaccurate due to the rolling up of the trailing-vortex system. Farther rearward, well behind the rotor, the flow may be represented more accurately by the flow behind a uniformly loaded wing.

Book Axially Symmetric Shapes with Minimum Wave Drag

Download or read book Axially Symmetric Shapes with Minimum Wave Drag written by Maxwell Alfred Heaslet and published by . This book was released on 1955 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The external wave drag of bodies of revolution moving at supersonic speeds can be expressed either in terms of the geometry of the body, or in terms of the body-simulating axial source distribution. For purposes of deriving optimum bodies under various given condtions, it is found that the second of the methods mentioned is the more tractable. By use of a quasi-cylindrical theory, that is, the boundary conditions are applied on the surface of a cylinder rather than on the body itself, the variational problems of the optimum bodies having prescribed volume or caliber are solved. The streamwise variations of cross-section area and drags of the bodies are exhibited, and some numerical results are given. The solutions are found to depend upon a single parameter involving Mach number and radius-lenght ration of the given cylinder. Variation of this parameter from zero to infinity gives the spectrum of optimum bodies with the given condition from the slender-body result of the two-dimensional. The numerical results show that for increasing values of the parameter, the optimum shapes quickly approach the two-dimensional.
