Download or read book Minimizing Stress Corrosion Cracking in Wrought High Strength Aluminum Alloy Products written by AMS D Nonferrous Alloys Committee and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this recommended practice is to provide the aerospace industry with recommendations concerning minimizing stress-corrosion cracking (SCC) in wrought high-strength aluminum alloy products. ARP823F revises the title to include "high-strength" alloys and results from a Five-Year Review and update of this recommended practice. Information was reorganized in Sections 3 and 4, but no new data was introduced.

Book Stress Corrosion Cracking of Wrought and P M High Strength Aluminum Alloys

Download or read book Stress Corrosion Cracking of Wrought and P M High Strength Aluminum Alloys written by A. W. Thompson and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major findings from a comprehensive study on the role of microstructure on the susceptibility to environmental embrittlement of high strength aluminum alloys are presented and discussed. Most of the studies used commercial 7075, or a high purity equiaxed version, HP7075, or a similar powder version 7090. Through the innovative use of loading mode and straining electrode test, stress corrosion cracking was shown to be controlled by the introduction and internal distribution of hydrogen, particularly to grain boundaries. This was the case for the underaged and peak aged microstructures, with the latter being the most susceptible. The SCC behavior of the even more resistant overaged microstructure was shown to be controlled by anodic dissolution processes, predominantly associated with slip bands. Aluminum alloys were also shown to be susceptible to embrittlement under conditions of cathodic polarization correcting a widely held belief that concomitant anodic processes are required. Studies using controlled microstructures were able to rank the importance of different microstructural features to help develop alloy design strategies for more environmentally resistant alloys--the most effective features are those grain interior precipitates which promote fine, homogeneous slip either by reduced particle cutting or enhanced dislocation generation; fine, grain boundary precipitate free zones were found not to be very important, except in their role in reducing the local strength of the boundary region.

Book Stress Corrosion Cracking Control Measures 4 Aluminum Alloys

Download or read book Stress Corrosion Cracking Control Measures 4 Aluminum Alloys written by B. F. BROWN and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most prevalent form of SCC service failures in aluminum alloys is caused by a combination of water, aqueous solutions or atmospheric moisture, alloy of susceptible composition and structure, and sustained tensile stresses, most often caused by heat treatment or assembly. The principal practical measures to control SCC are: (1) select an alloy of minimum susceptibility; (2) for wrought alloy, take precautions not to impose high sustained stresses across the short transverse grain direction unless the alloy and temper confer low susceptibility; (3) keep water and water vapor from the metal surface by providing natural drainage and by painting, with an inhibitor such as chromate; (4) minimize opportunities for chlorides to concentrate; (5) when using a susceptible alloy and temper, compressively stress the metal surface by peening or rolling, followed by painting; (6) use cathodic protection; (7) do not permit mercury or its compounds in close proximity to any aluminum structure.
