Download or read book Mild Cognitive Impairment written by Holly A. Tuokko and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2019-12-23 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Classic Edition of this foundational text includes a new preface from Holly A. Tuokko, examining how the field of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) has developed since first publication. Bringing together research from multiple studies and perspectives from various countries, the volume identifies MCI as an important clinical transition between normal aging and the early stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The up-to-date preface highlights the expansion in research, examining the benefits of various pharmacological, cognitive and behavioral approaches to intervention. Influenced by recent findings in neuroplasticity across the lifespan, the book recognizes the importance of intervention at the earliest stages of the decline trajectory. It revisits the contested diagnostic approaches for MCI as well as the varying prevalence of MCI internationally, yet points to the need for further longitudinal studies to fully understand the condition. Mild Cognitive Impairment continues to provide a comprehensive resource for clinicians, researchers and students involved in the study, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of people with MCI.

Download or read book Cognition and Interaction From Computers to Smart Objects and Autonomous Agents written by Amon Rapp and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2019-10-10 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cognitive sciences have been involved under numerous accounts to explain how humans interact with technology, as well as to design technological instruments tailored to human needs. As technological advancements in fields like wearable and ubiquitous computing, virtual reality, robotics and artificial intelligence are presenting novel modalities for interacting with technology, there are opportunities for deepening, exploring, and even rethinking the theoretical foundations of human technology use. This volume entitled “Cognition and Interaction: From Computers to Smart Objects and Autonomous Agents” is a collection of articles on the impacts that novel 3 September Frontiers in Psychology 2019 | Cognition and Interaction interactive technologies are producing on individuals. It puts together 17 works, spanning from research on social cognition in human-robot interaction to studies on neural changes triggered by Internet use, that tackle relevant technological and theoretical issues in human-computer interaction, encouraging us to rethink how we conceptualize technology, its use and development. The volume addresses fundamental issues at different levels. The first part revolves around the biological impacts that technologies are producing on our bodies and brains. The second part focuses on the psychological level, exploring how our psychological characteristics may affect the way we use, understand and perceive technology, as well as how technology is changing our cognition. The third part addresses relevant theoretical problems, presenting reflections that aim to reframe how we conceptualize ourselves, technology and interaction itself. Finally, the last part of the volume pays attention to the factors involved in the design of technological artifacts, providing suggestions on how we can develop novel technologies closer to human needs. Overall, it appears that human-computer interaction will have to face a variety of challenges to account for the rapid changes we are witnessing in the current technology landscape.
Download or read book Non pharmacological Interventions for Mental Disorders written by Lara Guedes De Pinho and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-04-01 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the side effects of the COVID-19 pandemic was the worsening of the symptomatology of mental disorders. The number of people with mental disorders has increased and pre-existing mental disorders have worsened, in many cases. Psychopharmacology alone is not sufficient for the treatment of conditions such as schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder, among others, and the combined use of psychopharmacology and non-pharmacological interventions is recommended by international guidelines. Despite this, most people around the world do not have access to non-pharmacological interventions and when they are diagnosed with a mental disorder, only psychopharmacological drugs are prescribed. In other cases, although non-pharmacological interventions, for example psychotherapy, are also prescribed, this response takes a long time.
Download or read book Philosophy of Psychology Causality and Psychological Subject written by Wenceslao J. Gonzalez and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-06-11 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary philosophy of science analyzes psychology as a science with special features, because this discipline includes some specific philosophical problems – descriptive and normative, structural and dynamic. Some of these are particularly relevant both theoretically (casual explanation) and practically (the configuration of the psychological subject and its relations with psychiatry). Two central aspects in this book are the role of causality, especially conceived as intervention or manipulation, and the characterization of the psychological subject. This requires a clarification of scientific explanations in terms of causality in psychology, because characterizations of causality are quite different in epistemological and ontological terms. One of the most influential views is James Woodward’s approach to causality as intervention, which entails an analysis of its characteristics, new elements and limits. This means taking into account the structural and dynamic aspects included in causal cognition and psychological explanations. Psychology seen as special science also requires us to consider the scientific status of psychology and the psychological subject, which leads to limits of naturalism in psychology.

Download or read book The Clinical Management of Early Alzheimer s Disease written by Reinhild Mulligan and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The enormous human and economic toll of Alzheimer's Disease in societies in which more and more people are living into old age is well-recognized. Scientists and practitioners alike have been working to limit it. Their major focus has been patients in the later stages of the disease, when dementia is fully established. Yet patients in the early stages of cognitive decline, far more numerous, often still living independently with family members, present a bewildering variety of challenges. Bringing together leading authors with diverse expertise, this Handbook offers the first comprehensive overview of approaches to the management of early-stage issues. The authors summarize the important implications of the latest research in their own fields for: * the recognition and formal diagnosis of cognitive problems; * the assessment of specific difficulties in daily functioning; * the formulation of a management plan integrating pharmacological, neuropsychological, behavioral, and cognitive strategies; and * the facilitation and support of caregivers' efforts. All professionals involved in any way with the care of early Alzheimer's patients and their families will find this book an indispensable reference.
