Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following a decade of U.S. bombing campaigns that obliterated northern Vietnam, East Germany helped Vietnam rebuild in an act of socialist solidarity. In Building Socialism Christina Schwenkel examines the utopian visions of an expert group of Vietnamese and East German urban planners who sought to transform the devastated industrial town of Vinh into a model socialist city. Drawing on archival and ethnographic research in Vietnam and Germany with architects, engineers, construction workers, and tenants in Vinh’s mass housing complex, Schwenkel explores the material and affective dimensions of urban possibility and the quick fall of Vinh’s new built environment into unplanned obsolescence. She analyzes the tensions between aspirational infrastructure and postwar uncertainty to show how design models and practices that circulated between the socialist North and the decolonizing South underwent significant modification to accommodate alternative cultural logics and ideas about urban futurity. By documenting the building of Vietnam’s first planned city and its aftermath of decay and repurposing, Schwenkel argues that underlying the ambivalent and often unpredictable responses to modernist architectural forms were anxieties about modernity and the future of socialism itself.

Book Acquiring a Non Native Phonology

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a study of the phonological development of a family of L2 English learners. It is the first full-length book that focuses on a tightly-knit group of learners' acquisition of phonology over a longitudinal timeframe, and the first book to study both social and linguistic factors across that time period. Jette G. Hansen analyses this data gathered from actual language learners in the light of recent theory, as well as challenging aspects of current thinking on the subject of second language acquisition. Acquiring a Non-Native Phonology therefore makes an important and original contribution to the field and provides an in-depth analysis and discussion of the developmental processes in acquiring a non-native sound system which has not previously been presented. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mergers & Acquisitions Review, edited by Mark Zerdin of Slaughter and May, seeks to provide a richer understanding of the shape of M&A in the global markets, together with the challenges and opportunities facing market participants. This comes at a time when the international market has seen a boom in dealmaking, with many markets reaching post-crisis peaks and some recording all-time highs. Mega-deals have been at the heart of the expanding market, with companies tapping into cash piles and cheap debt to fund transformational deals. Looking behind the headline figures, however, a number of factors suggest dealmaking may not continue to grow as rapidly as it has done recently. This book examines this topic and more across over 55 jurisdictions, as well as providing more general interest chapters covering the European Union, European Private Equity, M&A Litigation, and Offshore Private Equity. Contributors include: Didier Marti, Bredin Prat; Heinrich Knepper, Hengeler Mueller; Javier Ruiz-Camara Bayo, Uria Menendez.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A harrowing tale of courage, survival, determination, fellowship and the high price of covering a war . . . a master storyteller and one tough journalist.” —Tom Brokaw CBS Foreign Correspondent Kimberly Dozier shares her compelling story from being injured in Iraq to her recovery . . . shedding light on the ordeal faced by countless combat veterans and civilians. In a flash, Kimberly Dozier’s life changed. As an award-winning CBS News reporter, Dozier had devoted her career to being in the right place at the right time to capture the story. Suddenly, in the wrong place at the worst time, she became the story, as a deadly explosion tore through her team and the troops they were following, and a word spread worldwide. That Memorial Day in 2006, a routine mission ended with Dozier in a pool of blood on a Baghdad street, a victim of a car bomb that killed her team, cameraman Paul Douglas and soundman James Brolan, as well as U.S. Army Captain James Alex Funkhouser and his translator. Critically injured, Dozier woke to find herself fighting first for survival, then for recovery, and finally to return to the field. Breathing the Fire tracks one woman’s relentless determination to get the story, to get it right, and to get well again after everything went wrong. The paperback was produced at the request of hospital caregivers, who find the book helps trauma patients and the families supporting them. The author’s profits go to wounded warrior charities. “A rare, personal view—with all the attention to detail a great reporter brings to bear—into an experience shared by thousands of wounded Iraq veterans.” —Dan Rather

  • ISBN : 0313360286
  • Pages : 227 pages

Download or read book Memory Is Another Country written by Nathalie Huynh Chau Nguyen and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2009-08-25 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2010 CHOICE Outstanding Academic Titles The act of remembering is a means of bringing the past alive and an imaginative way of dealing with loss. It has been the subject of much recent scholarship and is of particular relevance at a time of widespread transnational migration. This book is a valuable and original contribution to the field of diaspora studies. Based on in-depth oral narratives of forty Vietnamese women, it deals with themes both universal and specific to this diaspora: divergent memories in families, the significance of homeland, the return to Vietnam, cross-cultural relationships, intergenerational tensions, and the issues of silence and unspoken trauma among Vietnamese refugees. It is the first study to apply memory and trauma theories to a substantial base of oral narratives by Vietnamese women in the West. Nguyen argues that understanding of these narratives provides not only an insight into the way Vietnamese women have dealt with loss, but also illuminates the experience of the wider Vietnamese diaspora and other refugees.
