Book Mineralogy and Chemical Behaviour of Some Refractory Gold Ores from the Barberton Mountain Land

Download or read book Mineralogy and Chemical Behaviour of Some Refractory Gold Ores from the Barberton Mountain Land written by and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of this project was to investigate certain aspects of the problems relating to gold extraction that have forced many small mines in the Barberton Mountain Land, Eastern Transvaal, to close down, mainly because the unoxidized ores have not responded to the conventional methods of treatment. The results of a detailed mineralogical examination of ores from sixteen localities in the area are followed by a brief literature survey on the nature of refractory gold ores and their treatment. The ores considered include the present chief gold producers - those from the Agnes, Fairview, New Consort, and Sheba Mines. The following fifty five ore minerals are present, gold being associated with twenty five of them: Ankerite, native antimony, argentite, arsenopyrite, berthierite, metallic bismuth, bornite, bournonite, chalcocite, chalcopyrite, chloanthite-skutterudite (types 2 and 3), chromite, cobaltite, native copper, corynite, covellite, cubanite, electrum, enargite, famatinite, franklinite, galena, graphite, goethite, native gold, hematite, ilmenite, jamesonite, lepidocrocite, leucoxene, linnaeite, loellingite, magnetite, malachite, marcasite, maucherite, melnikovite-pyrite, millerite, molybdenite, neodigenite, niccolite, pentlandite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, safflorite, siderite, native silver, sphalerite, stibnite, tetradymite, tetrahedrite, (two types), trevorite, and ullmannite. The paragenesis of these minerals is discussed briefly. An attempt was made to correlate the mineralogical properties of some of the ores with their expected behaviour. Chemical processing tests carried out included conventional cyanidation, dilute leaching, cyanidation in the presence of kerosene, and cyanidation of roasted ores. The results obtained showed that, in general, the agreement between the predicted and the actual figures for gold extraction was reasonably good. Explanations are given for discrepancies between these values. The chief cause of the refractory nature of the gold ores from the Barberton Mountain land was found to be the locking of gold particles in sulphide minerals, mainly pyrite and arsenopyrite. Other important causes are the precipitating effect of carbonaceous material, the presence of pyrrhotite, and the presence of unusual alloys of gold, which exhibit a pinkish tinge in polished section and may be refractory to cyanide solutions. The results of preliminary investigations of this 'pink' gold by an electron microprobe are included. The best extraction results for most ores from the area are generally obtained by leaching roasted sulphide concentrate.

Book excerpt: Geochemical Studies is a collection of papers dealing with ore petrology, particularly on the genesis of ores found in sediments. One paper describes the minor elements in metal deposits in sedimentary rocks, focusing on geochemical work on certain classes of ores in sediments and on the theories of origin of the deposits. With better techniques of microprobe analysis of trace elements, the paper notes that ore deposits in sedimentary rocks can be characterized by their minor element suites. One paper points out that large ore deposits cannot possibly be formed by a migration of substances (known as "negative" diffusion). The paper estimates that the quantities of material that can be accumulated in a sediment horizon with a great affinity for these materials, say in a period of one billion years, will still not be sufficient to produce a large ore deposit. The paper estimates the necessary diffusion coefficients that occur in deep structures, where increased mobilities of various substances occur. Geologists, geochemists, and engineers working with fossil fuels will find the collection highly significant.

Book A Scientific Bibliography of the Far Northern Drakensberg

Download or read book A Scientific Bibliography of the Far Northern Drakensberg written by Rodney Moffett and published by UJ Press. This book was released on 2023-04-14 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Scientific Bibliography of the “Far Northern Drakensberg” is a continuation by the Afromontane Research Unit of the University of the Free State (ARU) to document published and other similar works on the mountains of the summer rainfall area of South Africa. It follows “A Scientific Bibliography of the Drakensberg, Maloti and Adjacent Lowlands” which was published in 2020 (Moffett 2020), and which covered the area between the North-Eastern Cape and the North-Eastern Free State. The current work extends this northward by including articles and publications dating back to 1875 (E.Cohen, on the Lydenburg goldfields) reaching as far as the Wolkberg and Woodbush near Tzaneen in Limpopo Province. Figure 1 shows the boundary of the area covered, and although referred to as the Far Northern Drakensberg in this work, it is identical to that described as the LMEE, Limpopo, Mpumalanga & Eswatini Escarpment by Clarke et al (2022). Although slightly separate from the “lower” escarpment, the mountainous Barberton and adjacent Eswatini area, as well as the Leolo Mountains in eastern Sekhukhuneland are also included. Details on how the boundary in figure 1 was determined are given in Clark et al (2022). Bibliographies on two further ranges in the summer rainfall area, viz. the Magaliesberg in Gauteng province and the Soutpansberg in Limpopo province are to be the subject of future compilations.

Book Geology and Mineralogy of the Principal Goldfields in South Africa

Download or read book Geology and Mineralogy of the Principal Goldfields in South Africa written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This chapter gives a very comprehensive account of the South African goldfields, starting with a summary of the history of gold in South Africa and ending with 145 references. As pointed out, a total of 39 849 502 kg of fine gold was produced in South African mines up to the end of June 1985. This includes the production from gold mines in the Barberton Mountainland, mines extracting gold as a byproduct, and small mining corporations, which together contributed about 1 per cent of the total gold output. If the gold production for the second half of 1985 is taken at 320 000 kg of fine gold, the total output of gold for the period 1884 to 1985 surpassed 40 million kg of fine gold. The geology of the sediments in the Witwatersrand Triad is detailed, special attention being paid to the placers, which are the dominant gold-bearers, to the nature and mode of occurrence of the gold, to the distribution of the gold and heavy minerals, and to the chemical composition of the gold. As a small amount of the gold is not extracted by the processes of gold recovery currently practised on the Witwatersrand (0,1 to 1,0 g/t from a gold content of 5 to 15 g/t), attention is paid to the gold in the residues, which consists of gold enclosed by other minerals, or coated gold, thus shielded from contact with the lixiviant; gold dissolved during leaching then adsorbed by other minerals or by extraneous matter in the mill pulp; large gold particles incompletely dissolved when the residence time in the lixiviant was inadequate; or incompletely dissolved grains as a result of galvanic interaction between gold in contact with certain minerals, causing a decrease in the dissolution rates. Apart from the gold and silver minerals, other minerals of economic importance in these ores are uranium-bearing constituents, platinum-group minerals and cobalt-bearing and nickel-bearing sulpharsenides, and abundant pyrite (used for the production of sulphuric acid). In the current economic climate, they cannot be exploited on their own but are valuable byproducts of the gold. The gold of the Barberton Mountainland is described in a similar way, an account being given of the geological setting, the distribution and ore genesis of the gold mineralization, the mineralogical characteristics of the gold ores, and their refractory nature and treatment. The chapter is illustrated by seven line drawings and 24 photomicrographs. It also contains numerous tables.
