Many admirable papers on underground pumping engines have appeared in the journals and transactions of the engi neering societies from time to time, but in this scattered state they are obviously only accessible to a very limited number of persons. Moreover, the high price of some of the journals containing these papers, and the trouble and perhaps impossibility of bringing together such of these isolated papers as might be required, would prevent the general reader availing himself of them.
