Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mine Bookkeeping: A Comprehensive System of Records and Accounts for Mining Operations of Moderate Dimensions To make an intelligent analysis of the work at hand, the cost of performing each operation must be determined in terms of the unit involved; this unit may be ton of ore milled, ton of ore stoped, foot of drift or crosscut, etc. It is obvious that to be of economic value, a saving in the cost per ton of ore produced must not be accompanied by a corresponding drop in the grade of that ore; on the other hand, an increase in the cost of production may be more than offset by the gain in recovery which has been effected. The grade of ore which can be mined and treated at a profit should be definitely known. It is sometimes the case that this factor has not received suffi cient consideration, or that it has not been kept before those who are responsible for the actual mining operations. Where appreciable variations in mining conditions occur in different parts of the mine, the grade of ore which can be taken out at a profit from each working place should be determined. Ore which assays above this grade can be profitably mined and treated; anything of lower grade can only be handled at a loss and should be left. In case that a shortage of ore which can be mined and treated at an actual profit occurs, the grade at which ore can be handled in preference to running below capacity must be determined. Muck from development faces must be disposed of, and it is then the question whether rock which is already broken and in the car should go to the treat ment plant or over the dump. Book American Mine Accounting

Download or read book American Mine Accounting written by W. H. Charlton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Mine Accounting: Methods and Forms Employed by Leading Mining Companies While engaged as accountant with various copper-mining companies in the Lake Superior District, covering a period of twelve years, I was impressed with the fact that the subject of mine accounting was not being given the attention in technical literature that it might well receive, there being to my knowledge only three books published on the subject in the English language, one in this country, one in England and one in Scotland. The result was that I set about the compilation of the material in this volume, which are the practical working systems of companies representative in their particular fields of mining, believing that this treatment of the subject would bo more generally appreciated than a theoretical discussion. I have included in the accounting system of the Ojibway Mining Co. methods for a mill, in order to round out the subject, although this company has not built a mill at the present time. There will no doubt be found errors, both of omission and commission, although I have endeavored to avoid them as much as possible; however, I will be glad to correct in future editions any inaccuracies that are brought to my attention. I wish to acknowledge the many courtesies of my friends who assisted in gathering together and preparing the material in this volume. I am particularly thankful to Mr. E. B. Wilson, editor of "Mines & Minerals," for the use of the articles: "Recording Engineering Data at the Calumet & Arizona Mine," "Recording Engineering Data at the Boston & Montana Con. Mino," and "Recording Geological Data at the Calumet & Arizona Mine"; also to Mr. E. E. Whiteley, Mr. Lee Hayes and Mr. Thorald F. Field, the respective authors of these articles. I am also indebted to Mr. L. E. Camomile, Manager of "Mines & Methods," for the use of the material in the chapter on the methods of the Utah Con. Mining Co., which originally appeared in that journal. In conclusion I commend this volume to the kind consideration of mining men in general and mining accountants in particular, with the hope that it will bo of material benefit to the mining industry of this country. Download or read book Mine Accounting and Cost Principles written by Thomas Orrin McGrath and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mine Accounting and Cost Principles The present tax laws of most of the States and of the Federal Government require that accurate records be kept and that complete reports be made to the Government of the results of each year's business. The employes of large industrial units are demanding that they be informed of the results of their labor, and be given a share either of the profits of the business or in the savings resulting from their increased efficiency or effort. The general public is insisting that, being the consumer of all products, the costs and profits of industry shall be accurately determined and made public. As the result of the gradual depletion of our richest deposits of minerals the mining industry is operating on a narrower margin of profit than at any time in its history, and must know its costs from month to month to protect against loss. Also, it is now recognized that a mining enterprise may be properly equipped with the best of mechanical appliances and have an organization of high ability and employes embued with the spirit of co-operation, nevertheless the business cannot be intelligently managed without a knowledge of the results of operation and the condition of the business for each operating period, which information can be obtained only by proper accounting and costing. Therefore, each unit of the mining industry feels the need not only of accurately determining its costs and profits so as to have an intelligent guide to operations, and to meet the requirements of the Government, the public and of its employes, but to compile the accounting and costing data in as uniform a manner as possible so as to obtain the benefit of the operating data compiled by the other units of the industry. To meet this need there is an urgent demand for a complete presentation of accounting and costing of mining operations compiled on a scientific basis and in a uniform manner. In spite of this demand, however, at the present time the published literature is inadequate and lacking in uniformity and there is practically no agreement nor any great degree of efficiency in the accounting and costing practice of mines. The only explanation of the present status of mine accounting is that the great diversity in methods of mining, treatment and disposal of mine products, as well as in the character of the mines themselves limits the treatment of the subject to a description of individual systems and accounts unless the fundamental principles underlying all mining operations are recognized. Book Mine Accounts and Mining Book Keeping

Download or read book Mine Accounts and Mining Book Keeping written by James Gunson Lawn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mine Accounts and Mining Book-Keeping: A Manual for the Use of Students, Managers of Metalliferous Mines and Collieries, and Other Interested in Mining This book is the outcome of a short course of Lectures on Mine Accounts delivered at the Royal College of Science, London. Both the lectures and the book were suggested by Dr. Le Neve Foster, who, in spite of numerous and urgent duties, has given me most valuable aid in preparing the present treatise. In getting together materials I have been generously assisted by many friends. In addition to the acknowledgments made in footnotes, I would especially thank Mr. Bedford M'Neill, A.R.S.M., and Mr. T. H. Everett for kindly criticism and help. Chapter X. has been carefully revised by Mr. Alfred Smart, of the firm of Messrs. W. F. Smart & Son, Chartered Accountants; and Mr. L. H. Cooke, A.R.S.M., has rendered important service in reading the proofs. I would impress upon the student that the book-keeping forms employed must always be thoroughly adapted to the circumstances of each individual mine. Although the illustrative examples are numerous, and have been taken, almost invariably, from actual practice, yet they must only be looked upon as suggestive, and must not be rigidly copied without considering whether some modification should not be introduced to meet the requirements of the particular case in point.
