Book Curious Minds

Download or read book Curious Minds written by John Brockman and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2005-09-13 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What makes a child decide to become a scientist? •For Robert Sapolsky–Stanford professor of biology–it was an argument with a rabbi over a passage in the Bible. •Physicist Lee Smolin traces his inspiration to a volume of Einstein’s work, picked up as a diversion from heartbreak. •Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, a psychologist and the author of Flow, found his calling through Descartes. Murray Gell-Mann, Nicholas Humphrey, Freeman Dyson . . . 27 scientists in all write about what it was that sent them on the path to their life's work. Illuminating memoir meets superb science writing in stories that invite us to consider what it is–and what it isn’t–that sets the scientific mind apart.

Book Quantum Physics Meets the Philosophy of Mind

Download or read book Quantum Physics Meets the Philosophy of Mind written by Antonella Corradini and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-08-19 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum physics, in contrast to classical physics, allows non-locality and indeterminism in nature. Moreover, the role of the observer seems indispensable in quantum physics. In fact, quantum physics, unlike classical physics, suggests a metaphysics that is not physicalism (which is today’s official metaphysical doctrine). As is well known, physicalism implies a reductive position in the philosophy of mind, specifically in its two core areas, the philosophy of consciousness and the philosophy of action. Quantum physics, in contrast, is compatible with psychological non-reductionism, and actually seems to support it. The essays in this book explore, from various points of view, the possibilities of basing a non-reductive philosophy of mind on quantum physics. In doing so, they not only engage with the ontological and epistemological aspects of the question but also with the neurophysiological ones.

Book The Well Trained Mind A Guide to Classical Education at Home Fourth Edition

Download or read book The Well Trained Mind A Guide to Classical Education at Home Fourth Edition written by Susan Wise Bauer and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 880 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is your child getting lost in the system, becoming bored, losing his or her natural eagerness to learn? If so, it may be time to take charge of your child’s education—by doing it yourself. The Well-Trained Mind will instruct you, step by step, on how to give your child an academically rigorous, comprehensive education from preschool through high school—one that will train him or her to read, to think, to understand, to be well-rounded and curious about learning. Veteran home educators Susan Wise Bauer and Jessie Wise outline the classical pattern of education called the trivium, which organizes learning around the maturing capacity of the child’s mind and comprises three stages: the elementary school “grammar stage,” when the building blocks of information are absorbed through memorization and rules; the middle school “logic stage,” in which the student begins to think more analytically; and the high-school “rhetoric stage,” where the student learns to write and speak with force and originality. Using this theory as your model, you’ll be able to instruct your child—whether full-time or as a supplement to classroom education—in all levels of reading, writing, history, geography, mathematics, science, foreign languages, rhetoric, logic, art, and music, regardless of your own aptitude in those subjects. Thousands of parents and teachers have already used the detailed book lists and methods described in The Well-Trained Mind to create a truly superior education for the children in their care. This extensively revised fourth edition contains completely updated curricula and book lists, links to an entirely new set of online resources, new material on teaching children with learning challenges, cutting-edge math and sciences recommendations, answers to common questions about home education, and advice on practical matters such as standardized testing, working with your local school board, designing a high-school program, preparing transcripts, and applying to colleges. You do have control over what and how your child learns. The Well-Trained Mind will give you the tools you’ll need to teach your child with confidence and success.

Book JEE Advanced Physics Mechanics 1 Third Edition By Pearson

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past few years, the IIT-JEE has evolved as an examination designed to check a candidate’s true scientific skills. The examination pattern needs one to see those little details which others fail to see. These details tell us how much in-depth we should know to explain a concept in the right direction. Keeping the present-day scenario in mind, JEE Advanced Physics series is written for students, to allow them not only to learn the tools but also to see why they work so nicely in explaining the beauty of ideas behind the subject. The central goal of this series is to help the students develop a thorough understanding of Physics as a subject. This series stresses on building a rock-solid technical knowledge based on firm foundation of the fundamental principles followed by a large collection of formulae. The primary philosophy of this series is to guide the aspirants towards detailed groundwork for strong conceptual understanding and development of problem-solving skills like mature and experienced physicists. Book Advances in Computational Dynamics of Particles Materials and Structures

Download or read book Advances in Computational Dynamics of Particles Materials and Structures written by Jason Har and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-07-25 with total page 806 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational methods for the modeling and simulation of the dynamic response and behavior of particles, materials and structural systems have had a profound influence on science, engineering and technology. Complex science and engineering applications dealing with complicated structural geometries and materials that would be very difficult to treat using analytical methods have been successfully simulated using computational tools. With the incorporation of quantum, molecular and biological mechanics into new models, these methods are poised to play an even bigger role in the future. Advances in Computational Dynamics of Particles, Materials and Structures not only presents emerging trends and cutting edge state-of-the-art tools in a contemporary setting, but also provides a unique blend of classical and new and innovative theoretical and computational aspects covering both particle dynamics, and flexible continuum structural dynamics applications. It provides a unified viewpoint and encompasses the classical Newtonian, Lagrangian, and Hamiltonian mechanics frameworks as well as new and alternative contemporary approaches and their equivalences in [start italics]vector and scalar formalisms[end italics] to address the various problems in engineering sciences and physics. Highlights and key features Provides practical applications, from a unified perspective, to both particle and continuum mechanics of flexible structures and materials Presents new and traditional developments, as well as alternate perspectives, for space and time discretization Describes a unified viewpoint under the umbrella of Algorithms by Design for the class of linear multi-step methods Includes fundamentals underlying the theoretical aspects and numerical developments, illustrative applications and practice exercises The completeness and breadth and depth of coverage makes Advances in Computational Dynamics of Particles, Materials and Structures a valuable textbook and reference for graduate students, researchers and engineers/scientists working in the field of computational mechanics; and in the general areas of computational sciences and engineering.

Book Hive Mind Dreaming

Download or read book Hive Mind Dreaming written by Dr. Thomas Stark and published by Magus Books. This book was released on with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Lennon said, "A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality." OK, you want a whole new way of looking at reality. Nothing is more extraordinary than the Hive Mind. According to the theory of the Hive Mind, existence is made of nothing but minds, all packed together in the Cosmic Hive. All the minds do is dream, individually and collectively, and in doing so they generate the world we all experience. The fundamental activity of the mind is dreaming. Come inside the hive and discover how reality works.
