Book excerpt: What is 'mentalization'? How can this concept be applied to clinical work with children, young people and families? What will help therapists working with children and families to 'keep the mind in mind'? Why does it matter if a parent can 'see themselves from the outside, and their child from the inside'? Minding the Child considers the implications of the concept of mentalization for a range of therapeutic interventions with children and families. Mentalization, and the empirical research which has supported it, now plays a significant role in a range of psychotherapies for adults. In this book we see how these rich ideas about the development of the self and interpersonal relatedness can help to foster the emotional well-being of children and young people in clinical practice and a range of other settings. With contributions from a range of international experts, the three main sections of the book explore: • the concept of mentalization from a theoretical and research perspective • the value of mentalization-based interventions within child mental health services • the application of mentalizing ideas to work in community settings. Minding the Child will be of particular interest to clinicians and those working therapeutically with children and families, but it will also be of interest to academics and students interested in child and adolescent mental health, developmental psychology and the study of social cognition.

Book The Mind at Work

Download or read book The Mind at Work written by Mike Rose and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2005-07-26 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring a new preface for the 10th anniversary As did the national bestseller Nickel and Dimed, Mike Rose’s revelatory book demolishes the long-held notion that people who work with their hands make up a less intelligent class. He shows us waitresses making lightning-fast calculations, carpenters handling complex spatial mathematics, and hairdressers, plumbers, and electricians with their aesthetic and diagnostic acumen. Rose, an educator who is himself the son of a waitress, explores the intellectual repertory of everyday workers and the terrible social cost of undervaluing the work they do. Deftly combining research, interviews, and personal history, this is one of those rare books that has the capacity both to shape public policy and to illuminate general readers.

Book excerpt: Drawing on philosophical, psychological, and evolutionary perspectives, Bogdan analyzes how primates create the resources for "metamentation"—the ability of the mind to think about its own thoughts. Mental reflexivity, or metamentation—a mind thinking about its own thoughts—underpins reflexive consciousness, deliberation, self-evaluation, moral judgment, the ability to think ahead, and much more. Yet relatively little in philosophy or psychology has been written about what metamentation actually is, or about why and how it came about. In this book, Radu Bogdan proposes that humans think reflexively because they interpret each other's minds in social contexts of cooperation, communication, education, politics, and so forth. As naive psychology, interpretation was naturally selected among primates as a battery of practical skills that preceded language and advanced thinking. Metamentation began as interpretation mentally rehearsed: through mental sharing of attitudes and information about items of common interest, interpretation conspired with mental rehearsal to develop metamentation. Drawing on philosophical, psychological, and evolutionary perspectives, Bogdan analyzes the main phylogenetic and ontogenetic stages through which primates' abilities to interpret other minds evolve and gradually create the opportunities and resources for metamentation. Contrary to prevailing views, he concludes that metamentation benefits from, but is not a predetermined outcome of, logical abilities, language, and consciousness.

It is sum total of the incredible creativity of eight young authors (Janhabi B Dutta. Varuni Sampat, Yukta Jaiswal, Shveni Kanwar, Muskaan Hooda, Divya Dalal, Mahima Arora, Nishtha Setia). In this fast-paced world, it is vital to slow down and think about life. How incredible this world is. It is no less than a miracle. Another miracle is that you can leave your busy schedule and see things from another person’s eyes. It is like your soul leaving your body temporarily, and entering into another body. Reading books is one of the ways to understand and enter another world, one concocted by the mind of the author. When you read a book, you perceive things from the author’s perspective. Since this is an anthology, you can take a look inside multiple minds in a single book. The authors of this book have described their views of this world. From experiences to fantasies, that our young minds have, has been attempted to portray in this book. This book will connect to your heart and become a part of it. All the co-authors in this book have explained their opinions and imaginations through their stories. Fiction or Non-fiction, these stories are a part of our thinking. A lot of creative freedom has been given to them by The Cog Publication to express as they felt. Just like people use their strengths in doing what they like, we used our strengths in writing. Our major strengths are our creative imagination and mindset. Each story in this book contains a different perspective and a different concept. Each author has put their minds and souls into writing their hearts out in these stories. This book can’t be categorized under one genre; it contains a lot of elements like supernatural, thriller, psychological, romance, crime, wit, humour and many more.
