Book excerpt: If asked to list the greatest innovators of modern American poetry, few of us would think to include Jay-Z or Eminem in their number. And yet hip hop is the source of some of the most exciting developments in verse today. The media uproar in response to its controversial lyrical content has obscured hip hop's revolution of poetic craft and experience: Only in rap music can the beat of a song render poetic meter audible, allowing an MC's wordplay to move a club-full of eager listeners. Examining rap history's most memorable lyricists and their inimitable techniques, literary scholar Adam Bradley argues that we must understand rap as poetry or miss the vanguard of poetry today. Book of Rhymes explores America's least understood poets, unpacking their surprisingly complex craft, and according rap poetry the respect it deserves.

Book excerpt: This book bridges the gap between basic memory research and mnemonic applications through a careful analysis of the processes that underlie effective memory aids. The book traces the history of mnemonics, examines popular techniques, and discusses the current relevance of mnemonics to both psychological researchers and those seeking to improve their memory. Using a unique approach (termed "mnemonology"), the authors seek not necessarily to promote specific mnemonic techniques, but to provide information which will allow one to improve memory by creating their own mnemonics.

Book Lange

    Book Details:
  • Author : Beth Cheth
  • Publisher : Trafford Publishing
  • Release : 2002
  • ISBN : 155369838X
  • Pages : 448 pages

Download or read book Lange written by Beth Cheth and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lange has recently returned from a tour of duty with an oil exploration and pipeline company in the Near East. He had been incarcerated in an Arab jail for a number of months under almost inhumane conditions. Wrongly. While in the Arabian jail, to preserve his sanity, Lange had developed the ability to induce OOBE's. He didn't understand what was happening to him, he thought they were merely hallucinations. The setting is the Gulf Coast of Mississippi in the late 1980's when the U.S. oil giants had pulled out of the Arabian Gulf area. He was now back in the States looking for a job. Rhyme, a lovely young woman, is the ward and 'strong right arm' of George Westwood, an entrepreneur involved with the development of a fabulous new technology that turns out to be a system of communication with other time frames. Rhyme hires Lange and is attracted to him in spite of the differences in their ages. She is a student of the occult and lays the Tarot cards about Lange. They promise her 'Happiness and Joy'. Rhyme seduces Lange and decides he is her soul mate. She learns that Lange can achieve these conditions. They work on it together, very successfully. On their next attempt they visit an 'Orientation Platform' in the Astral World where they meet with Rhyme's grandmother, Cynthia, who, before her death, had been a major factor in Rhyme's early life. Rhyme's mother had died at childbirth. Lange moves in with Rhyme. There are a number of excursions into the Astral realms. On two they are given rides in a UFO. The first of these is an excursion into the adjoining territories of 'Athe'. On another occasion they take a friend along and they are given a tour of the two lover levels. The 'Orientation' is on the 'third level'. We have here a pretty good guide to achieving the same results (OOBE's) by your own efforts, if you care to try these tenets and the story does not deviate for their principles.

Book An Entertaining Tale of Quadrupeds

Download or read book An Entertaining Tale of Quadrupeds written by Nick Nicholas and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nicholas (U. of Melbourne, Australia) and Baloglou (State U. of New York, Oswego) have done an admirable job in creating a translation and commentary of this 15th-century Byzantine text that's accessible to specialist and non-specialist alike. The tales are of very human-like activities, banter, and scuffles between talking animals. In their lengthy (159- page) introduction to the side-by-side translation, Nicholas and Baloglou describe the political and cultural context of the work, emphasizing the political innuendo that might be gleaned from the tale's satirical tone. They describe the tales within the context of other texts, both Byzantine and foreign. Appendices provide the texts of some of these influences, as well as discussion of literary and historical issues raised in the animals' stories. Book Reggaeton

    Book Details:
  • Author : Raquel Z. Rivera
  • Publisher : Duke University Press
  • Release : 2009-04-24
  • ISBN : 0822392321
  • Pages : 388 pages

Download or read book Reggaeton written by Raquel Z. Rivera and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2009-04-24 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hybrid of reggae and rap, reggaeton is a music with Spanish-language lyrics and Caribbean aesthetics that has taken Latin America, the United States, and the world by storm. Superstars—including Daddy Yankee, Don Omar, and Ivy Queen—garner international attention, while aspiring performers use digital technologies to create and circulate their own tracks. Reggaeton brings together critical assessments of this wildly popular genre. Journalists, scholars, and artists delve into reggaeton’s local roots and its transnational dissemination; they parse the genre’s aesthetics, particularly in relation to those of hip-hop; and they explore the debates about race, nation, gender, and sexuality generated by the music and its associated cultural practices, from dance to fashion. The collection opens with an in-depth exploration of the social and sonic currents that coalesced into reggaeton in Puerto Rico during the 1990s. Contributors consider reggaeton in relation to that island, Panama, Jamaica, and New York; Cuban society, Miami’s hip-hop scene, and Dominican identity; and other genres including reggae en español, underground, and dancehall reggae. The reggaeton artist Tego Calderón provides a powerful indictment of racism in Latin America, while the hip-hop artist Welmo Romero Joseph discusses the development of reggaeton in Puerto Rico and his refusal to embrace the upstart genre. The collection features interviews with the DJ/rapper El General and the reggae performer Renato, as well as a translation of “Chamaco’s Corner,” the poem that served as the introduction to Daddy Yankee’s debut album. Among the volume’s striking images are photographs from Miguel Luciano’s series Pure Plantainum, a meditation on identity politics in the bling-bling era, and photos taken by the reggaeton videographer Kacho López during the making of the documentary Bling’d: Blood, Diamonds, and Hip-Hop. Contributors. Geoff Baker, Tego Calderón, Carolina Caycedo, Jose Davila, Jan Fairley, Juan Flores, Gallego (José Raúl González), Félix Jiménez, Kacho López, Miguel Luciano, Wayne Marshall, Frances Negrón-Muntaner, Alfredo Nieves Moreno, Ifeoma C. K. Nwankwo, Deborah Pacini Hernandez, Raquel Z. Rivera, Welmo Romero Joseph, Christoph Twickel, Alexandra T. Vazquez

Book Sound Intentions

Download or read book Sound Intentions written by Peter McDonald and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2012-11-22 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rhymes in poems are important to understanding how poets write; and in the nineteenth century, rhyme conditioned the ways in which poets heard both themselves and each other writing. Sound Intentions studies the significance of rhyme in the work of Wordsworth, Keats, Tennyson, Christina Rossetti, Hopkins and other poets, including Coleridge, Byron, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Swinburne, and Hardy. The book's stylistic reading of nineteenth-century poetry argues for Wordsworth's centrality to issues of intention and chance in poets' work, and offers a reading of the formal choices made in poetry as profoundly revealing points of intertextual relation. Sound Intentions includes detailed consideration of the critical meaning of both rhyme and repetition, bringing to bear an emphasis on form as poetry's crucial proving-ground. In a series of detailed readings of important poems, the book shows how close formal attention goes beyond critical formalism, and can become a way of illuminating poets' deepest preoccupations, doubts, and beliefs. Wordsworth's sounding of his own poetic voice, in blank verse as well as rhyme, is here taken as a model for the ways in which later nineteenth-century poets attend to the most perplexing and important voicings of their own poetic originality.

Featuring readings of masterpieces in all genres that draw widely on recent innovations in literary theory, it highlights the variety of experimentation in a transitional epoch.

Book excerpt: My Rhyming Poetry Scroll, from start to finish as it does unroll, shows my poems in their variety, all in order chronologically, from when I was age twenty-seven to about sixty, from days of mental stability through bipolarism (manic-depression) back to mental stability. I hope on you it makes a good impression. My poems run from being serious to being lighthearted and humorous. They reveal most of my thinking through years of experience and reading. I've written about what's bad or quite great, things important to my heart, soul and mind (pate). I write about rhyme and its absence from today's verse, and write about bad psychiatrists who could not be worse. Some poems are couplets, one's an hour long, but all are in rhyme, and some approach song. My scroll shows my development, from where I was to where I went, my life's sweetness and bitterness, my strength and feebleness, my simplicity and complexity, my criticism and whimsy, my sarcasm and sympathy, my opinion and philosophy, my love and my hate, culminating in what I have written of late. In my scroll you will find my joy, sadness, thankfulness, ire, and as I write here now, I hope you like my work, entire.
