Book Mind in Animals Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mind in Animals Classic Reprint written by Ludwig Büchner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-12 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mind in Animals I t will naturally be understood that the narrowing of the subject to a relatively small field of Animal Psychology compels the author to use only a very small number out of the many hundreds of facts and observations on the intel lectual life of animals, which have been sent to him from all parts of the world in answer to his public request, and for which he here again returns his public acknowledgment; further, the greater number of these communications give the result, as might be expected, of daily and private observa tions on the more accessible animals. The author therefore ventures to refer his respected correspondents to a later work from his own pen which, as compared with the present book, undertakes a far wider task. He will therein endeavor, by means of a psychological classification, to trace the dif forent affections and manifestations of man's emotional and intellectual life throughout the great circles of the animal world. Here also most of the communications will be found under the names of the several observers, and the author trusts that this will be accepted as his personal acknowledg ment for individual help. Book The Investigation of Mind in Animals Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Investigation of Mind in Animals Classic Reprint written by E. M. Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Investigation of Mind in Animals Animals has rendered a certain amount of revision necessary. To incorporate the results of the numerous papers bearing on the subject of Animal Behaviour which have been published since 1914. Would have meant adding greatly to the size of the book, and as the majority of these contributions revolve round difficult questions of technique, or are somewhat controversial in nature, discussion of them would not have been in place in a short introduction to the subject. One section, however, deals with entirely new matter. The final section of the first edition, which gave an account of the famous 'talking' horses, I have decided to omit from the present edition, and to replace it by a discussion of the Multiple Choice method of Yerkes and the method of study ing perseverance reactions devised by van Hamil ton. As yet these methods have not been widely applied, but it is to be anticipated that they will be considerably developed and extended in the future. For the rest the alterations in the text are chiefly verbal in character. Certain additions have been made to the bibliography. I desire to express my indebtedness to my husband, Mr F. C. Bartlett, for his help in pre paring this new edition for the press. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Animal Mind: A d104-Book of Comparative Psychology The advance of comparative psychology during the past nine years has been remarkable. In preparing a second edition of this book I have tried to include every newly discovered fact of the first importance, but the literature is now so extensive that in order to keep the bibliography within reasonable limits, I have had to exer cise more selection than I did in preparing the bibliography for the first edition. For like reasons, the text of the book does not enter so fully into detail in describing the results of a particular investigation as was possible when the material at hand was so much less in amount. More than half the book has been completely rewritten, including the chapters on Vision, on Spatially Determined Reactions, and on The Modification of Conscious Pro cesses by Individual Experience. I hope that the edition represents an advance upon its predecessor, not only by including many newly ascertained facts, but also by pre senting its subject matter in more logical form. Book excerpt: In the bestselling tradition of When Elephants Weep and Dogs Don't Lie About Love, Inside the Animal Mind is a groundbreaking exploration of the nature and depth of animal intelligence. While in the past scientists have refused to acknowledge that animals have anything like human intelligence, a growing body of research reveals otherwise. We’ve discovered ants that use leaves as tools to cross bodies of water, woodpecker finches that hold twigs in their beaks to dig for grubs, and bonobo apes that can use sticks to knock down fruit or pole-vault over water. Not only do animals use tools–some also display an ability to learn and problem-solve. Based on the latest scientific and anecdotal evidence culled from animal experts in the labs and the field, Inside the Animal Mind is an engrossing look at animal intelligence, cognitive ability, problem solving, and emotion. George Page, originator and host of the long-running PBS series Nature, offers us an informed, entertaining, and humanistic investigation of the minds of predators and scavengers, birds and primates, rodents and other species. Illustrated with twenty-four black-and-white photographs, the book is the companion to the three-part, hour-long show of the same name, hosted by Page.

Download or read book Mind in the Lower Animals in Health Vol 2 written by W. Lauder Lindsay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mind in the Lower Animals in Health, Vol. 2: And Disease The Old doctrine or assumption of the phrenologists, as represented by Gall and Combe, the doctrine on which they have so greatly prided themselves, and foolishly continue to do so - that, namely, which regards the brain as the sole organ Of the mind - must unquestionably be given up. We must henceforth regard the true site, seat, or organ of mind as the whole body; and this is the only sound basis on which the comparative psychologist can begin his studies. There would be the less difficulty in accepting such a basis were it only borne in view that the muscular as well as the nervous system, that muscular action, has an intimate relation to mental phenomena - to ideas as well as feelings. Muscular action is essential in certain, if not in all, mental processes e. G. In feeling or emotion. Outward muscular expression (e.g. Facial) and inward ideas or feelings are inseparably corre lated (maudsley). Download or read book Animal Life and Intelligence Classic Reprint written by C. Lloyd Morgan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Animal Life and Intelligence However profoundly the laws of phenomena may be modified by such introduction of new and higher factors, the older and lower factors are still at work beneath the surface. And he who would adequately grasp the social problems of our time should bring to them a mind prepared by a study of the laws of organic life: for human beings, rational and moral though they may be, are still organisms and man can in no wise alter or annul those deep-lying facts which nature has throughout the ages been weaving into the tissue of life. Some parts of this work are necessarily more technical, and therefore more abstruse, than others. This is especially the case with Chapters III V., and VI.; while, for those unacquainted with philosophical thought, perhaps the last chapter may present difficulties of a different order. With these exceptions, the book will not be beyond the ready comprehension of the general reader of average intelligence. Book Intelligence in Plants and Animals Classic Reprint

Download or read book Intelligence in Plants and Animals Classic Reprint written by Thomas G. Gentry and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-25 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Intelligence in Plants and Animals Nothing is more charming to the mind of man than the study of Nature. Religion, moderation and magnanimity have been made a part of his inner being through her teachings, and the soul has been rescued by her influence from obscurity. No longer doth man grovel in the dust, seeking, animal-like, the gratification of low and base desires, as was his wont, but on the wings of thought is enabled to soar to the very gates of Heaven and hold communion with God. Though made a little lower than the angels, yet, through the mighty play of forces that have been at work in the world, which we, in the latter half of this enlightened century, are just beginning-to recognize and comprehend, he has been lifted from the mire of degra dation and placed upon a higher social, intellectual, moral and spiritual level. Out of the animal, in the scheme Of Deity, the Spiritual system Of things is to be elaborated, and not the animal out of the Spiritual. This natural world, so to speak, is the raw material of the spiritual. Therefore, ere man can understand the Spiritual, he must understand the natural. Though his knowledge was at first about material things, or such as pertained to natural phenomena, yet from this through the ages has been builded, little by little, that mountain-height of knowl edge, intellectual and moral, which, if rightly directed, is to bring him into fellowship with Deity. A's we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly, or, Lord from heaven.
